Thanks to our sponsor RockAuto.com. RockAuto.com is an auto parts retailer founded in 1999 by automotive engineers with two goals: Liberate information hidden behind the auto parts store counter (by listing all available parts, not just what one store stocks or one counter-person knows), and make auto parts affordable so vehicles of all ages can be kept reliable and fun to drive. Visit www.rockauto.com/?a=HG-YT-21Q3 to order auto parts online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and have them conveniently delivered to your door. Need help finding parts or placing an order? Visit our Help pages for further assistance!
Despite its best efforts to thwart our progress at every turn, our EJ20 Subaru WRX engine gets closer to completion in this week's episode of Redline Update. Davin figured out the issue with the main bearings (long story), so he sets out to get the short block assembled. He only hits one small snag in this episode but quickly remedies the situation with the help of a grinder and a sacrificed pair of needle-nose pliers!

I get the impression that Davin isn’t digging this Type rebuild series. I get it, but also enjoy learning new engines & why engineers did what they did in their design phases. plus, I’m interested in this type engine for a swap into an old underpowered Porsche roadster I drove in High School in the ‘90s. anything boosted via turbo or supercharger has its place in my life these days.

The ej motor platform is so particular and intricate. I have a 02 wrx and I’ve learned to love Subaru development and platform definitely not an easy platform to get into. They are very hard to get right because most people just don’t want to do the research and time into finding out what is actually proper for these motor to run right. Seeing this gave me flashbacks to rebuilding the 1,000 cc engine in my 1966 Beetle. The advantage of that engine was having a local machine shop service the saddles. They machined the case, the cranks and we bought appropriate bearings to reflect that. Pretty quick and simple. I don't envy you this engine.

Very well done. You hit alot of topics that are often missed on EJs. I opted for a new shortblock becuase properly repairing an old one is a PIA and with the added cost of maching. I was better off with a new short block for $2200. $3200 with forge pistons and rods which has the best bang for the buck.

People say how reliable Subaru's are, but almost every person I know that owns one, either has head gasket issues of some sort, or have to add a quart of oil every thousand miles. Yet people love them. They are great cars, I am a fan of the WRX series, and STi of course. Our family drove Subaru's in the early 80's having 2 of them in the family. You main bearing mismatch reminds me of the Buick 3.0 of the early 1980's. The mains are not in a straight line. At the place I worked, they had one we were replacing rods and mains, in the car. The story goes, finding the proper size bearings was a nightmare. In fact I think after replacing them the motor did not turn. Now the boss being fed up ordered a crankshaft kit and had the block line bored. After getting the block back the crankshaft did not turn again after tightening it down. Lots of phone time with GM we found out you cannot line hone that block, the mains were not straight. Also some of the top and bottom bearing shells were different sizes. When assembling the short block at the factory. They would start with standard bearings. Now if needed they would make, or have, custom halfs to make everything work. Now this information came from GM engineers. If you've ever messed around with one of these 3.0L carburetored motors, they suck!!! Shake and rattle, none of them run smooth. Thank God they were short lived...

When the EJ came out it was a world class engine for the Japanese. Far more advanced features than most American engines and on par or beating most other imports. All from a tiny company with less than 1% market share. Toyota sold over twice as many Corollas in in the USA 1990 as Subaru sold cars. The EJ won many races, took many records, was incredibly reliable, and had a lot of positive attributes. There have been issues over the years, but it was overall a very successful platform. Keep in mind they are working on a 20 year old engine now and that it was far cheaper than anything Porsche. :)

Keep doing what you are doing. Maintenance is key. Make sure you change the coolant every 60,000 miles at most too, and keep the cooling system in general in good condition. You could look into the cylinder 4 coolant reroute, but jury is out on how necessary and effective it is.

In terms of the line hone, if the other journals are smaller, could all of the journals be honed to the same size and use thinner bearing in the center jornals and thicker bearings on the end journals? Are the tolerances such that that sort of action is not possible or is the stress on the journals and/or just outer journals too great for that? Honestly did not know.
@802Garage
@802Garage Год назад
According to the Subaru manual, the crank journals are not actually different diameters. The only very slight difference is 0.0001 that's one ten thousandth of an inch of bearing thickness, thinner on bearings #1 and #3. All oil clearances are even listed as the same. Not really sure where the confusion came from unless I'm missing something.

This may have already been stated, but it's my understanding that a sealant needs to be placed between the case halves in a very particular way...at least the repair manual specifies that. Just curious why he didn't do that. Japanese machine surfaces are amazingly precise but it would suck if you put that in your car only to find a leak that requires full teardown to repair.

Thank you for not pulling the torque wrench 3 more times after it clicks.

Guess there will be no honing with a torque plate. Sad. Always beats me why people go through all the trouble of stripping down to the block, getting it machined but not doing that

Does the number 1 piston have to perfectly level to the top of block on compression stroke to make a TDC or after TDC

A shiny fresh engine and nothing to put it in. Come to the SW and pick up a shell with some patina and NO RUST.

I've got the feeling there's going to be a massive oil leak when this engine gets up to operating temp, because I didn't see Davin use any RTV sealant between the two case halves during final assembly. He talked about doing it, but I didn't see him do it, and I didn't see any on either half. Just saying.

if you look closely at final assembly you can see the gray rtv squeezing out down the center of the cases.

@@TDT0188 Thanks for pointing that out because I obviously didn't see that when I watched the video.

Love all the rebuild series. But I’m just sitting here wondering how he’s able to get ahold of all those King main bearings when I’m having major issues finding King XP or Clevite 77 mains for my VG30 rebuild. Everywhere is either canceling my order or just say there’s a massive backorder from those manufacturers.

Should there be a gasket between two halves of the block?
