Having owned this car for almost 3 years I go back and watch these type of videos to make sure I’m not missing anything I should be doing. These cars are amazing and I am so glad I built mine for me. I don’t try to race, I drive it daily and take it to mountain passes. Close to 100k and still going strong. Your videos definitely helped a ton!
I drove my 18 VA for 100,000 miles Cobb stage2+ 93 OTS. 130,000 miles total. Most important thing is how you drive it. I drove like a normal human and when I sold it to buy my VB it ran perfectly, never burned or lost any oil at all, and never had to fix a thing. Don't drive like a dummy.
My 16 never had a problem just hit 85k. Changed oil early every time only run mobile 1 and 93 gas she runs great. Like you said don't drive like a dummy and they are fine.
I bought a used wrx aside from cosmetics the engine is really healthy since i bought it hasnt burned oil or lost any, like you said if drive normally they will be just fine and if you drive harder make sure you do your maintenance at the interval or earlier
Appreciate the content. New to the platform. Been slowly acquiring knowledge and parts. Sitting on performance mods until I’m done with cosmetics so I know that I’m doin the performance stuff the right way. Keep postin. I’ll be following. You got other media platforms you’re uploading to?
Speaking as a wrx owner, fbo with stage 3 tune from Torque performance. Modify however/whatever makes you happy. Ofcourse supporting safety mods for your power gains is highly recommended. Drive safe ya'll.
Ran 370 to the wheel for a year and a half. Just fine. I have 86k miles and im back to stock because im selling it. The number 1 way to keep your car from taking a shit is oil change ever 3,500 miles hands down.
Seems like I am doing everything right so far. My 2014 wrx came with an aftermarket racing clutch, aftermarket rack & pinion, and I got an AEM Cold Air Intake (Carb certified) installed on there. ECU was flashed after install by ASE certified professionals. Right now focusing on body and suspension mods, but I will get a COBB accessport before I do anymore HP mods. Catless downpipes are illegal here so I would never get one. And lastly I get all my work done at a performance auto shop that's pretty reputable in my area. I've never had a car this fast before and I am focusing on making it feel more stable before I make it any more speedy at the moment.
Thank you guys for the info 🧡 I just got a 2018 WRX base and I love the looks of the car and want it to last as long as possible. It is in fact, my baby 😂 I just want it to sound a little nicer at some point!
Sup Boiz from Sault Ontario Canada, I appreciate this video so much! I've heard about doing most of the things you guys mentioned doing and I'm going to work on them for sure. I've had my 2015 Subaru WRX for 3 years now. There's only 1 mod I want to say that in my opinion is extremely important even if you wanna stay stock: RUN A MACH 2 GFB DEVERTER VALVE. I had a lot of boost lag, throttle response was terrible and biggest thing was the stock diverter you could blow through it with your lips. Get a new diverter valve. Also should mention, the boomba, is NOT reliable. I had a boomba, sounds cool but I had a lot of inconsistent idle. Swapped to a MACH 2 GFB Diverter, miles different. Even some exhaust pops with everything stock.
Just got a Premium Red 2020 WRX. It will be my daily driver. Just want to do a few minor modifications. Remote start, mud-flaps, paint protection, radar detector, interior camera, security system upgrade. AOS, cold air intake, full exhaust kit and nice tires for the summer. I’m not lovering the WRX because the roads are horrible where I live. Heard about Cobb tuning to stage 1 but I don’t want to void the warranty.
@@WRXGarage What modifications can I do to improve the cars reliability? I was going to continue researching. I’m not looking for power just a really fun reliable daily.
AOS, and egr delete will both add reliability, but the best thing you can do is get a protune! A good protune will basically add the most reliability possible over anything else! It does void warranty as well though.
@@WRXGarage got it! 👍🏻 AOS, EGR delete, protune. Looks like I’ll have to void the warranty to improve reliability. LOL! I’ll add everything else too. Looking at summer rims as well. I will update by late February/ beginning of March. I just have to find a good shop around my area.
Have you had any cracks show up in the rotors? I swear every time I see someone getting drilled rotors never wants them again because they crack after heavy use.
i just bought a 2021 wrx for 28.5k just before all the mark ups! im so fricken happy with this car. it is unmodded and i will probably NOT do anything for HP.
@@isaiah979 my 2015 has 114k miles on it. if you do your preventative maintenance, oil change ect. before the trip, you should not have any problems. The problems come when people build these cars too high hp without upgrading internals.
I have the car capable of massive power (mustang cobra getting twin turbocharged) that can still be driven daily. But I have the Subaru for a fun, fuel efficient comfortable daily driver. That said, I think 350-ish hp would be more than a blast.
Great info guys, I would also say to also talk to your tuner as well, whether it be an E-Tuner or an actual shop that specializes in Subarus. Talk to them and tell them what you want to get out of the car and your goals. Even meeting up with other people, getting ideas, or going for rides to somewhat set expectations. 2019 WRX Premium Grimmspeed Drop in Filter TGV Deletes EGR Unplug Perrin Charge Pipe Perrin Turbo Inlet Grimmspeed EBCS Cobb Catted JPipe Phatbotti Tuned
Yes! Certain tuners prefer certain brands for each of the parts. Most actually prefer the stock BPV as well. Definitely go check out our dynotune prep and tune videos!
@@WRXGarage Exactly, the tuner you go with is your source. Oh I’m already tuned by Ron Watson and loving it! Another good TMIC is the Garrett which is on its way to me.
MAP Tunes are the exact same as Cobb, they're both OTS tunes. Etunes or Dyno tunes are preferred. Anything OTS is never going to be perfect for a car. If you are going to use OTS follow the Map notes and use the specific parts per the notes.
Great video guys thanks for the shout out hahaha 🇬🇺!! Personally I use AMS oil signature series 0w-40 but its 87 to 97F here 365/24-7. Also ill be ordering my grimmspeed front mount soon, then ill be doing walnut blast, AOS, tgv, egr, ebcs, oil cooler all one shot. And of course getting it tuned 😎😎 ill post on IG when I do everything 🙌🏽 stay safe out there guys!
currently own a 2017 wrx limited and I HATE it. The evo 8 and 9 are such superior cars even my evo 8 that was 2004 Evo from 16 years ago the steering rack the shifter and the pedal setup all feel more exact than the wrx.. its a scalpel and the wrx is a rugby player....
New to this Subaru community as I have owned Hondas and Nissans and this video helps put everything at ease for me. I was lucky to pick up a used 2020 WRX Premium from my local Subaru dealership with 32k miles on it. I did purchase a powertrain extended warranty because I know how fragile these cars are but I do want to modify it to have a good amount of HP for a daily. I’m willing to risk “voiding” it if it’s gonna help make my car reliable. Everything is stock from what the sales person said( and I checked everything) only has an axle back. What would be some good mods for a daily? I’m looking at 300-310 WHP. Again awesome video! Aloha 🤙🏻 Dom
Honestly.. I really disagree with people who think these cars are fragile.. watch some of my track videos where I'm redlining it in 100⁰ air temp for multiple 2+ mile laps haha.. I truly think there's just a lot of people out there who 1. Don't do their maintenance 2. Don't let the car warmup correctly or 3. Don't use the right tune for the right parts. If you avoid all 3 of those and don't moneyshift you should be fine haha. For parts: COBB Accessport and their stage 2 package. It'll be 50 states legal and you don't need a protune. I'd also suggest aftermarket brake pads and coilovers
@@WRXGarage yeah I feel Subaru has been around long enough and most of the problems stem from ownership. I baby the WRX with proper warm up and oil checks as well as maintenance. Btw AOS systems, I’ve read that the lines can get clogged and possibly damaging some of the engines or turbo. Should I be concerned on installing one? And if recommended, what’s a good brand? I live in Hawaii so our weather is pretty much same all year round.
I’m new to all the tuning stuff as well as many others, is it pretty easy to tune it yourself at home or would it be better to take it to a shop to do it? I had a pretty easy tuner on a old mustang years ago and I did it myself but not with the sti, just wanted to see if it’s pretty simple to DIY. Thanks guys 👍🏻 I really appreciate all the info.
Tuning Subaru's is a very, very difficult process. It takes most tuners years of experience to learn how to do everything correctly. I would absolutely go to a local shop rather than trying to tune it yourself.
Will be looking forward to if you guys make a steering wheel install video.. I'm debating on getting a new steering wheel myself down the road. OEM wheel scratches up way too easily.
I’ve been watching mechanic channels lately. Rainman Ray came across a wrx with an awful steering wheel setup. It looked futuristic, but the car’s front end damage was probably due to steering problems. It’s an interesting watch, but really I just want to urge people to be careful with their work. Cheers.
Just FYI on Cobb’s own support forums one of their guys says you don’t need a tune for the CP or intercooler. Will it give you more power? Of course. Also, process west is a great verticooler.
You don't need one, but our cars are very sensitive to any change in the air intake. That's why we can't use random air filters. Technically I could be safe to run an aftermarket IC without a tune, but I absolutely doubt that the car wouldn't see a DAM drop or something like that. Plus, without a tune you wouldn't actually see any benefits other than a larger mass for less heat soak.
I think I probably misunderstood something. Are you guys saying we should strictly stick to the OEM oil filter? cause there’s decent aftermarket brands
Depends on how much power you're pushing! In my opinion, especially in ohio where you get pretty cold winters, you're not going to see much benefit from 40w. It'll make cold starts much harder during the winter. But if that's what your tuner says.. 🤷♀️ idk maybe have that discussion with him.
He said you need to change tune if i add a air oil separator. Is that the case with cobb sf stage 1+ sf intake? Bought the access port sf intake package and a cobb aos. Do i need a new tune other than 1+ if i put all this on at once?
you shouldn't need a tune for an AOS or catch cans, since all it's doing is collecting the blow by which is a big issue with WRXs (and a majority of turbo cars). Hope this helps!
Was thinkin in getting a muffler an exhaust, or maybe just exhaust, my knowledge on cars are very limited, would this be safe or not recommended yet till I do other stuff? I found a beautiful 2017 with body skirt on it, but aftermarket, is this bad?
I just bought a 2015 wrx and am wanting to build on the engine. After stage 1 + id like to install a recirculating or bypass valve, not a blow off. What brand would you recommend for best reliability?, thanks.
Which fog bezel did you use for your WRX, all the ones I see say it only fits the sti?? I want the one that has the led.strip between the top and bottom lights in fog lamp area..
You have to find the ones for the 2015-2017 bumper! The new bumper has different size bezels. The sti and wrx are the same 2015-2017 and also 2018-2020.
@@WRXGarage So the bezel for the 2020 sti should fit my 2020 wrx ??? Ok great!!! Santa go back for.my gift !!! You guys know anyone selling a used accesport ???
@@WRXGarage okay, thank you…I installed cobbs big sf intake with their stage 1+ tune but had to revert back to the stock intake due to the car running too rich and it not running properly
Question …. I bought a Mishimoto air intake and just now got the accessport. There is no OTS map for these anymore as I know of but only COBB intake map. Is there really a difference or can I run that Map regardless?
It really depends on what you're doing with the car. If you don't mind the extra vibration you'll get in the cabin, there aren't many downsides to them. For most street cars, they're not really necessary.
These cars don't really two step in the way that you imagine. You can do 2 step launch control easily. As for shooting flames, it's really just how aggressive your tuner goes for it. A catless dp is definitely needed though
I have a my15 sti i want to know can I run a atmospheric blow off valve if do a tune? Currently running stage 2. I've heard they are bad for these motors
Atmospheric blow off valves are not good for the new WRX's especially without a tune. A good tuner can use them but they're usually reserved for higher hp builds
If I just do the intake and catback then run stage1 plus tune can I just run that tune forever or do I have to keep tuning after I tune it? Completely new to the whole tuning stuff
Once the tune is flashed/loaded onto your car's ECU, it stays there permanently until you remove it. You can even unplug your Accessort after flashing the tune if you want.
@@WRXGarage damn bro what?? Every 10k miles is crazy. What makes you change them so often? Severe maintenance schedule for my 2020 WRX is every 60k miles
You could definitely switch to 5w40 then! For people in the north where negative temps are common, cold starts would be harder. But for you I think it's definitely fine 👍
Depends on the brand! For the Boomba one you can run it without a tune just fine. For COBB or GFB or something like that it would probably be better to get a tune for it.
The Boomba valve is very, very simple in design and doesn't really have any added benefits that the others do. Still a good product, but there's a reason most tuners don't like them.
2020 WRX- Boomba Racing BPV , Remark AxleBack Exhaust with muffler delete, STI short throw shifter. My car runs a lot better, very smooth gains and holds boost. Didn’t tune. Boomba BPV doesn’t require tune. That’s about all I’m doing to my car.
And “ essentially “ the best oil period, is going to be factory Subaru oil….that’s what they come with, factory filled with Subaru oil/relabeled Idemitsu.
@@WRXGarage hey to each his own….just saying it’s used by Subaru in the factory when the engines are shipped out of Japan. Well, after the special oil blend they used when testing the engines for break in ( high phosphorus and zinc ). Idemitsu IMO is just the way to go. Even the Subaru rally team uses it. And that goes beyond just being a sponsor and or product placement. Also I’m almost positive Subaru suggesting the factory oil is just not part of most manufactures whole “ planned obsolescence “ skeem.
Faster than 95% of the cars on the road ehhh really though? You're not gonna get a tune on a cat back? But you're going to put in a tune on an aos? Elaborate on that one for me
95% of cars on the road are less than 250hp easily. No tune needed for catback because you won't see any power difference, the only restriction in the wrx exhaust is the downpipe off the back of the turbo. You don't put a tune on for an aos unless you're running a very specific track model.
Thinking of getting the Cobb stage 1+ kit along with the boomba bpv. Would it be necessary to get a pro tune if I get the bpv or safe because it’s 100% recirculating?
The Boomba bpv is pretty much safe to run without a tune. Most tuners prefer specific brands of bpv tho so make sure to check with your tuner ahead of time
