Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE Modifying My Subaru WRX
In this video, the last of our winter series, I talk about the pro's and con's to tuning your 2015+ Subaru WRX and the potential risks you face. When I was looking at my first WRX 5 years ago, the community sold me on easy horsepower, faultless tuning, and no problems. Well, that isn't all true. If you want a tuned WRX with lots of horsepower and a fast 0-60, be ready to fork over some cash and risk that warranty. This also applies to those of you driving Subaru WRX STI's! So hopefully this video helps you understand the reality behind OTS tunes (stage 1 and stage 2), and the fact you need a protune and real parts to make power!

There's a FA20 DIT reliability poll in the NASIOC forums that can give you some idea of the new platform reliability among people who mod. Also lists who tuned the cars. One of the reasons I chose Torqued Performance to tune ours. The engine has to run efficiently before trying to add power and that's his approach. It's making the power you can make while running correctly, not making as much power as you can and accepting compromises in efficiency.

Bought a WRX in '02 (new), kept it for 17 years. Only mod was a fresh stock map. Oil change every 5K. Kept a journal with every light bulb/wiper blade. Dropped the clutch once in heavy rain just to see what she would do. Some spirited driving, never hammered. No problems for the first 10 years. Last 7 years I had some issues but for me it was the price of admission of keeping the car for 208K miles (no head gasket issues). Replaced with it's twin, '05. No better compliment "you are the guy people want to buy a car from". Great cars

I have a 2017 wrx base with no modifications, and I love the car. No issues, 90k miles. I think the biggest thing that I've had to get used to is that a large portion of wrx owners and even people who have cars and wanna modify them, are always asking me why I wanna run stock. I always tell them that I like how the car runs stock, and wanna keep it running like this. Regardless of WRX owners or even just normal car people, I get shunned and scolded because how dare I get a car that most people modify and not modify it.

I bought a 2018 50th Annv. Edition. The only mods I plan on doing to it, are reliability mods. Add an AOS, upgrade the shifter bushings and add a COBB Turbo Inlet. I'm also going to add a Bank's IDash. Not for tuning, but for monitoring the vehicles engine parameters. That's it. Do your regular scheduled maintenance, and the car will last. But I get people saying the same thing to me. "You bought a WRX but you're not going to tune it???" No offense people, but if I wanted a car pushing 275+ as my daily, I'd just buy one that came with it stock. You do you man. Enjoy it for what it is!

I agree with your last statement. That's part of the reason why I went with a new WRX. Who actually knows what a previous owner has done to a car. Plus the fact that these have really high resale value if I ever decide to go down that path. I got a lot of goodies from a guy going back to stock that only had 10K miles on his car. He seemed legit but who knows how many rough launches he's done or proper maintenance. Also, I see nothing but love in the PNW but I don't spent too much time paying attention to FB or online forums.

I'm glad someone (with reach) is finally mentioning the issues. The FA20 is extremely tricky for tuning, highly prone to ping/detonation, and highly finicky in general compared to a bunch of other vehicles in a similar class. The scope for making power is also very limited and requires a lot more investment than something like a Golf GTi or R, where you just throw on a tune and can make more power than a WRX with all the bolt-on's, and more reliably. I wouldn't say I regret buying my Subaru, but probably I wouldn't do it again.

Also, is there any to know before you buy the car whether it was modded then turned back to stock?

@@Davethehorse321 that's a bummer. Ethanol is the way to make power with a direct injected turbo car. Just a downpipe and E30 you can make a solid 340WHP, and safer from a detonation standpoint than any pump gas setup. If it's not nearby though that basically scraps that idea. Ethanol "ages" quickly so even if you got a few 5 gallon containers and just filled them like once a month and then just mixed them in when you got gas they may not be "full strength" and potentially could be dangerous from a tune standpoint. I know storing them in the sun is a bad idea. Keeping them sealed well so they don't absorb water is a big deal. I don't have that issue since I pass one on the way to work though.

I think a used FA20 WRX is the best bang for buck as long as it's a couple of years old, 1 owner, and still has some of the warranty left. I have a 2016 wrx limited that i bought in 2018. It was 1 owner, 14k miles and had 1 year left of the warranty. A new wrx for the same trim would have been a lot more money and out of my price range at the time. I absolutely love the new facelift bumper but not enough to fork out the extra cash which i used for car parts instead lol. And i still had some of the warranty left in case something bad happened with the car. MAINTENANCE is the biggest thing with these cars. As long as you keep up with maintenance, don't push the car until it's at proper temp and use a proper tune when installing performance mods these cars can be very reliable. I absolutely love my WRX, i smile every time I drive it. One of the best entry level cars for an enthusiast! Really liking the content btw, keep it up 👍

@@someguy920 Well ya, obviously look into the history of the car before buying it. Don't go in blind. And really inspect everything on it to see if it was modified and just reverted to stock before it was sold or traded in. I was just saying that, in my opinion, it's better to buy used with some of the warranty left rather than used with no warranty left. With the latter you are completely SOL if something goes bad. And if you don't want to or can't buy new, you can get a good deal on a used car. If you are really worried, a lot of dealers even have an extended warranty you can get for extra piece of mind. Just read through the warranty so you know what is and isn't covered. Yes, you don't know exactly what you are getting into if you buy used, there is risk, but there's ways to minimize that risk if you can't buy a new car. Just my 2¢

Back in like 2005 when I was 19 or 20 years old mom and I test drove a Black 05. Loved it, mom hated it...mom had final say, life lead to the VTEC and 7.3L non-turbo obsession's. Then life upgraded, and found myself browsing new WRX's. Same fucking price as it was back in 05. I was like wut, howdispossibul.img. Um yeah, get in my driveway. @@Pax-Christi the simple answer is if someone wants to go over 350 whp reliably. If they track their car regularly then go for it. The FA is way more efficient in terms of how it handles E85, but you also have to build the motor to run E60 and E85 reliably

Great video. Personally I believe the best option is to buy the car with the power you want already build in. So my personal sweet-spot is 200 Hp. Why? Well I think it's good enough to drive comfortably/legally and have fun when you want to. So currently I have a Ford Fiesta 1.0L Ecoboost 100 Hp car, which I ECU Tuned to 145 Hp, but that's all I did and in the future I hope to have the Fiesta ST so I don't need an ECU tune. Other than that, I only changed my exhaust, the air-filter (not cold air intake) and the suspensions (lowered about 25-30 mm), because the goal is to keep my car as a daily. About the community I completely understand. There is a lot of hate out there, but I personally just hang out with people that respects me and I respect them.

The only thing I did was put an ETS extreme catback on it, which sounds fantastic. After watching video after video I can’t help but really want to do a pro tune may to stage 2. Everyone makes it sounds like the car will be so much funnier, faster and smoother. I’m only concerned about possible severe issues that it may cause. Any idea on how much some of the possible issue tend to run when you get it tuned? I’m not worried about putting money in if I need to, but I don’t want to drop like $5-10k if something happened.

It literally says in fine print that any changes or tampering with the ecu will result in a denial of coverage for engine related issues. Regarding issues that could result biggest one would be 12k to rebuild the engine if it blows, more if the turbo goes with it. I would honestly say don’t mess with the engine unless you have 15 k set aside for a rainy day. I also have a 21 Sti and bought the 10 year warranty. Basically if you want a certain area of the car covered don’t mod that area.
