Can the new breed of hot hatches de-throne the WRX as the budget performance king? Watch when we add the Toyota 86 and Holden Commodore to the mix: • WRX v 86 v SS v Megane... Subscribe for more: ru-vid.com_widg...
bought my ST3 for 26k cheap and I can carry all my stuff, family has split A/C controls "marriage saver". Every turn amazes me no front wheel drive handles like this its pretty cool
out all of those cars! WRX is faster, has more hp, is more practical, has AWD, has more space, easiest to upgrade, is more reliable, has better handling,! ...Not to mention it demolished ST and GTI on Nurburgring lap times!...Also none of these cars, except the WRX, will perform well in difficult weather conditions!
Michael Leibowitz lol as far as US market goes GTI is the Same price as a WRX, maybe 1k cheaper, depending on a model! Other than that, the car is simply inferior in almost every way, except as you mentioned the Interior quality! which is irrelevant when you buy these sports cars. Unless you are an elderly person, who can't live without comfort driving!
nukeurhouse12 The GTI starts at $24,995. The WRX starts at $26,295. The GTI hits 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The WRX does it in 5.5 seconds (with 58 more horsepower than the GTI). So...yeah, the only thing going for the WRX is its AWD system.
Michael Leibowitz Quoted at 5.5 seconds. Low-5s are entirely possible with the WRX, and even so the WRX has a considerably stronger engine everywhere else.
I've got the '15 STi, owned a 335i, driven numerous V8 M3's, driven the GTi & the STi in my opinion is the 'confidence inspiring car of them all'.. The E90/E92 M3 = beautiful looking car, great sounding motor, little gutless down low, bmw reliability... The 335i = amazing twin turbo engine, looks great, beautiful interior, bad reliability from my experience but not terrible. The GTi = looks nice, nice interior however not confidence inspring, FWD is eugggghh, launch control useless, motor is peppy but nothing wow. I strongly feel Subaru is the best car you can get for you $$$, however I would consider a BMW M5 next year... But not without first keep my Outback or STi. (have to have a subi no matter what)
I completly agree with the wrx or the sti. Inspiring confidence. When I first got my car I was amazed on how well it stuck to the ground. I couldn't be more happy with my choice.
Yeah you are right about subies you have so trust on that car you always no that you gonna turn without any understeer and its really fast . Bmw look useless in front of a subie because all that oversteer it's terrible!!!! Good chose the outback it's awesome i have one and it can handle everything !!!!
No surprise there. BMWs oversteer. Subs are planted. Should have gotten the Subaru first. Then with that confidence move on to bmw. Why get an m5 when Porsche does what bmw and Subaru does except better? Confidence and fun combined. ;)
dont know why you include BMW in this presentation, VW it is a german budget car its not luxury, engines from VW fails pretty fast and reliability and car build is not there with the Audi
They forgot the Mazdaspeed 3 for when you want a hot hatch with the fuel economy of a full size truck. I have one, and they are pretty fun, and I would have thought they would be on this list. Not a refined as the ST, but IMO that is what gives it character.
I love your videos and watch every single one of them, eventhough I´m german. I can not wait to study one semester abroad in melbourne in august. Are you only located in Sydney?
How did you manage 6.9 seconds for the megane? I have managed a 6.4 in my 2012 model that I recently purchased and I'm not use to the car yet? Probably need some new test drivers..
It looked like a hot day so turbo's are not as efficient, also that place may be in the hills so its higher altitude means less oxygen to be combusted, also two people in the car possibly, and as they have already stated its not a flat run.
I like the way that one guy says the Golf Gti is missing "something" and the other guy offers the solution - "the X-factor" - the reply is - "that's it". Conundrum solved?????
The golf, ford and Renault are all missing something. What they are missing is character that only an iconic vehicle like the wrx can have. Yes, the rest of the worlds car makers may have caught up with and even surpassed the wrx with their offerings, but they will never put a smile on the faces of owners like the wrx owner has.
There is either something wrong with the timer or it must have been +35 celsius , because the 0-100 times seem slow, I have the golf gti & it gets to 100k alot faster than 7.1 secs.
Carlitox b I want the WRX. For the next referesh it would be good for some quality interior upgrades on the WRX plus hp bumped to 300 and the sti gets 350. Better gas mileage. A corvette with a v8 gets 36 on the highway. and raise the height of the center console
Subaru needs to bring back the hatchback asap, they're alienating a large portion of people by only offering the sedan. Basically if you want a sporty awd hatch in manual you have to pay an extra 10k for a Golf R or the new Focus RS. That was one of the nice things about the WRX, a more affordable car with all those things in one.
WRX can handle itself in the snow, but the low ground clearance doesn't really make it ideal for snow driving. Especially if the snow has hardened and is icy, you have to be really careful because you can damage the body work very easily. Its more of a car than can deal with snow, not a car meant for snow.
Roy Batty Yet is far superior to the VW in snow which is really the point. None of these car are made for snow but if you want to own one of this cars in snow country the WRX is the hands down winner.
This is a very true review and I too would pick a Focus ST over the Megane,GTi,Subaru But if someone asks me which is the best CAR among this group I will say GTi, its like a luxury car with hot hatch performance The ST is RAW and in your face a lot of people dont like that, another thing about GTi is ride comfort, I mean it was almost as comfortable as the Audi A6 3.0 Tdi , its super comfy in comfort mode, glides over bumps like its floating, unbelievable ride quality and yet on sport mode its fast and enough stiff and still fast , GTi is sure the best car money can buy but its too perfect to light up hearts
santclause1 See ST is soft but not sloppy, it has a very good suspension setup that balances comfort with sporty driving, its beeen pushed 2 even further limits by the VAG group in Golf but restricted the outright control thatsY its not as fun as ST true Megane deserves something special but its not as comfy as ST 2 drive, its playful but not hilarious, ST is proper hooligan machine if u want it 2 be but nothing that scares the hell out of u like Mazda speed 3
i don't agree with you jandj. i can use the ford focus as a family car + track car. i can have fun while going to work or driving in twisty roads. the golf GTI is good but it doesn't give you the fun that the focus give. so the focus is the best !
Amine Greenoi have u driven the new Gti,if not drive one,its dead impressive car,i agree ST s an awesome car but if there is somethong called traction,no other FWD car i have ever driven has more traction than Megane, close second is seat leaon cupra 280,3rd is mk7 Gti , Gti might have just 227 hp but it can easily lap faster than ST and yet has much better interior, comfort space, luxury, features, but since i am not 100% convincex about clinical driving i too like ST,but if 1 is too choose with brains GTI id way better than ST,but for the heart ST is the way to go
I Agree with you. i've never driven a golf GTI, but i have a ford focus and i can go like an insane driver in corners and never worry of an oversteer or massive understeer. and it has a great suspension. while the goolf is good only when you are driving with 2 persons max, when you are 5 the car will kiss the ground and it won't be confortable. in my opinion if you wan't a family car and a good value for money and you just drive in highways, choose the GTI it's the best. if you drive a lot in twisty roads and you like going like an airplane on the roads, choose the ford focus it's the best .
Lets remember the wrx does everything u see in the snow...these other options only do in perfect conditions....if u live where "winter is coming" there is no other option
Here, in the Real World, I would never give up my DSG GTI for any of its contenders. Unlike All the cars in this test (including the manual shift GTI shown), my DSG GTI features cutting edge automotive technology, such as the ACC and Park Assist. Plus, here in Brazil (VW imports the GTI from Germany, for now), its power output is 220 hp, and it does 0 - 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds. Wether it can or cannot be beaten on a Race Track, makes no difference to me, because my GTI displays more advanced technology in automobile engineering than the majority of cars one drives by every day. And That's what really turns me on. Cheers.
jay czyzyk Yup, GTI falls apart over time, all that expensive looking internal trim stops looking so good when your holding the pieces in your hand. WRX is the better performer, more reliable, better looking and has AWD. Sorry the GTI just does not match up when you really look at it.
The gti is a better daily car until you've owned it for 3 years and have to start fixing your car every few months. Also the wrx does not run on regular fuel. It uses the same 98 ron/93 aki fuel that all of the cars in the test require. Do a test of 10 yr versions of those cars and only one or two would even show up. I'm always amazed at what reviews pick as the best all rounder when I never leaves the shop.
I saw a lot of reviews and I have to say you two should take your heads out of your asses and leave reviews for professional, when it comes to interior, focus is far and I mean far behind volkswagen, there is no question, if you don't see difference between Gti and st, then you should look for different job, it's not because I like Gti better it's because I test drove st, wrx and Gti
what a crock of shit, i own an ST and a Golf and driven them many many hours, the ST is the better car, power and handling, seats are the best ever. the ST is built in Germany and is at least equal in build quality to my Golf. overall the ST handles better and the engine is more powerful and has lots of low down grunt you cant make a call on these cars from a short test drive.
yourfast07 "the one thats sold in USA, " And there's your problem when you're bringing in your opinions to a comment section for an Australian video. Our Focus ST is indeed built in Germany and they summed it up great. Build quality is indeed on par with the Golf, but it *looks* cheap.
Yeah all good points but nah, Golf GTi ans slap the performance pace on it for good measure. Others might be a bit more playful on a track which doesn't mean squat really, you'll still be getting in the Golf in 3 years time and think it's a nice piece of kit both to live with and drive.
So in the real world they all do the sprint to 100 ks in about 7 secs. That's about as quick as a standard 10 yr o!d falcon! Make of that what you will.
Consumer reports rates Subaru the highest in reliability, performance, utility, and comfort. It's also the only brand to have top IIHS safety picks throughout the entire lineup. What seems questionable about that?
It's funny that non of the car's can accelerate as fast as the factory claims. . My Opel/Vauxhall Vectra 2.8T OPC/VXR from 2008 with 280 BHP can easily hit the 6.5 sek. The factory claims :) and keep on going to 280 km/h.. With new software and downpipe with no cat. it hits 300 km/h and the engine develop 350 BHP and 550 NM.... so no new car for me... my Vectra are faster then the new insignia when the cars do a rolling start.. I think that's up to new regulations all around the world for lower emissions and better fuel economy. . But still I can hit 13 km/l on a long trip... :)
You're not paying attention, the 0-60 times were taken on an uphill. Don't get too excited, on a normal day the WRX leaves it in the dust by over a second if launched properly (3rd gen is even quicker). And the rest of the cars on this list are also on the 5.6-5.8 range for 0-60. So I am sorry to tell you that all these cars are on an upper tier when compared to a Vectra.
haha NO!, jk the golf to me is a bit flat and feels a bit too ordinary, out of all these id have either the st, or wrx but thats just me being brand loyal
I think ford could do better with the interior. Looks tacky and cheap. Even the red sti stitches on the seat looks ugly. What's so cool abt the handbrake design? The whole interior design makes it look like a Chinese made toy. Gti and Renault has the best, functional sporty yet elegant interior in my opinion.
The GTI is faster than the ST with much less hp... its a better quality item, nicer interior, nicer car overall but they picked the ST over the GTI... wtf? www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2015-volkswagen-gti-vs-2013-ford-focus-st-final-scoring-performance-data-and-complete-specs-page-4
WRX without question, that is why I bought a 2016. Looked at the GTI and have to say that the new WRX and GTIs interiors are pretty much equal these days. I would even say the Subaru ergonomics are better and have larger screens for info systems. GTI superior interior is just no longer true. From a performance stand point the WRX bests the GTI in every measurable category. Finally the VW just doesn't have the long term reliability of the Subaru. Now the GTI does have a better ride but so does a Camry, if you want a daily driver with a little performance then get the GTI but if you want a performance car you can drive daily the WRX is the winner. One final note, the turn on the WRX is poor which plays a big role in its less refined ride. The Cobb access port corrects all these issues and makes for a very smooth power delivery similar to the GTI but with much more power. If you are looking to increase power the WRX can be turned to 60 additional HPs with all stock hardware and can deliver the power without harm to the vehicle dynamics. As the GTI increases power because of it FWD layout the cars dynamics decrease proportionally to the power. The GTI is just not a real performance car, the car stock is about as good as it will get.
+Kevbo75; Almost forgot to talk about the style our lack there of. The WRX is rather nice, it is aggressive looking and has nice design details. It will never be mistaken for the base car it comes from. It is also very different from past WRXs, fresh and more mature. The GTI is also nicely finished but to tell you the truth you would have a hard time distinguishing the last 10 year of Golf, Rabbits and GTI if you lined them all up, it is just pretty boring, old and stale. They really need to get a design team with a new idea. When every I pull up to a GTI, I'm never sure it is not a Golf till I'm right on top of it, of course that is the last time I see the back of it, LOL. Also what is with the picnic table cloth seats, they were cute 10 years ago, today they are just sad. VW again needs new ideas, this horse has pretty much been beaten to death. Win big time goes to the WRX.
no way man. I had a 16 wrx, and the interior is better for a wrx, but it dosnt mess with the GTI's. Hows that base radio in the wrx? Its shit. I couldnt stand it. And the seats sit way higher then they should. Hated my 16 wrx, I sold it. Great power and handling though absolutely loved it on a mountain road. I wish i fit in it better.
All i see is: Wrx- top of the model, ST-top of the model, RS-top of the model, GTI- not top of the model.... Put the Golf R in there and watch them all run away scared.
curtis tompros Yeah wrx also not top of model but top of model is 305 hp Golf R is 300. And about the price well what you want Volkswagen Golf 7 R is miles better then ST And RS so its more expensive. Im sayn just you cant compare 2 hatches when one of them is all out (top of the range) from the factory and the other one is not.
Vicky Vignesh001 horsepower is modern to you? lol. kW is standardised and accurate unit of measurement used in other parts of the world. Welcome to the rest of the world.
