The difference between the impacts is that they changed the chuck and bearing design to reduce chuck wobble and make the bit more stable. The real star of the kit is the drill. The new drill have a full metal gear housing to make it stronger and increase durability.

He also forgot to mention an increase on the IPM from 3900 on the 15 to 4100 on the new 18.

I use my subcompact kit for light duty projects. They are enjoyable to use and look cool. Who doesn't love blacked out power tools? I really see no reason to "torture test" these. They are made for light duty. I guess it's good to know they won't burn up the first time you drill a massive hole with a spade bit. But in reality, why would you ever do that? I use mine for what they are for and enjoy them. And I use something bigger and more powerful for, well, bigger stuff.

From what I saw, the bias is different. The old one appears to bias its power to more forward, the newer one more for reverse. However, the auger bit test. It appears that the knot held it up. Everything else, driving the old one was faster, and the new faster at removal. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what it appears.
@geoffstrickler
@geoffstrickler 3 года назад
Looks to me like they basically just changed the gear ratio between the two. That gives the old one slightly more torque, but the newer one a slightly faster top speed. That would explain why the old was almost always faster on driving fasteners, but the new was faster on removal.
@amerintex
@amerintex 3 года назад
was suprised to see in forward both models are nearly the same with the xdt15 being slightly faster on some runs. seems to be a waste to upgrade if you already have the xdt15. thanks for the video keep them coming.

I bought this set. Based on your video. I found the “old version” on HD with a free bit set. I was excited they came with the 2.0amp batteries vs the 1.5 I’ve had them for about a week and am loving them. The impact replaced my Festool TID 18 as my daily driver. Great little tools

Reason for the 1.5ah is to make it the unit as a whole more compact and lighter. Just like the older 18v that are white, same specs as the teal version, but smaller battery and they list it as a compact version
@PhillyFixed
@PhillyFixed 3 года назад
Nah, they're identical in size and the 2ah weighs 13oz, vs 12oz for the 1.5. It's a cost issue...
@jacksmith2315
@jacksmith2315 3 года назад
Didnt really mean in reality, meant in marketing. I dont see why else they would market the old white one as compact when it has exactly the same specs just sold with a 1.5ah battery. Ive seen other companies market lower ah batteries as compact but werent really much smaller or lighter than the next closest ah. You know how it is...its all about marketing. Make the customer feel as if they are getting something better/more what they are looking for even if its not of not enough to make a difference. Some companies are obviously a lot worse with it than others

I purchased that kit from home Depot this month and returned it. I was surprised it came with the old batteries and the charger doesn't have a cooling fan. Also the impact driver has a sharp lip by the trigger. I checked it on a couple of other kits and they all had the sharp lip.

These test are fine but this class of drills aren't really meant for that heavy duty. I have the older models and I use them for cabinet installs, where high torque isn't required.

Huge mistake I used to own the old kit the impact is fine with the smaller battery, but the drill needs at least a 3.0 it kills the battery quickly. I usually used my 5.0 in the drill or else I would be swapping batteries before the job was finished.

The XDT15 is my favorite impact. I was debating if the minor size difference and possible better impact was worth the upgrade. Thanks for showing me I'm perfectly fine with what I have. Have you done the subcompact hammer drill vs the sub compact normal drill? I didn't see a video on it, but I could have just missed it. I think they are the same but I'm looking to find a deal on the normal one so I can do a compare video with the hammer drill I have. Love your videos.

i have the Xdt12, Xdt15, and the new Xdt9. i still go for my Xdt15 more than the others. cant beat the size to power ratio. I love my new Xdt19 and its not that much bigger than the 15, but the 15 always gets me. I'm guessing that the new Xdt18 has some of the same "inner guts" of the 19 but in the subcompact form. its really silly nowadays.. even Makita's COMPACT line is practically a subcompact at this point.
@BkBk-gy6vr
@BkBk-gy6vr Год назад
I currently have both to try, and 1 is going back. Do you notice the trigger is better on the 15 can control your slower speeds better with the 15, the 18 not as controlable, and quicker more torque. I think I prefer the control on the 15. I also notice a little more wobble on the 15 gonna be a touch desicion.
@PhillyFixed

I can't say I noticed the trigger difference, but the 18 does have an improved collet. Personally, I'd go with the 18.

Soooo....the new and improved is basically the same but with new and improved (margins) cheaper batteries! Hmmm, since the crappier batteries are obvious, wonder what other surprises are inside? I own Makitas (XDT16 etc.) so will avoid their compact offerings. Sad to see Makita making things worse as time goes on--start building stuff in China, cheezier parts creep in, lower capacity batteries.... changing from the nominal rating to the bogus "max" ratings as Makita strives to become DeWalt. Oh well, such is the way of the world. Thanks for the info!

I just don't understand this category of impact drivers. They don't perform as well at driving fasteners, are called subcompact yet are significantly longer than other 18V impacts and weigh about the same. The only thing that makes them subcompact is that they are slimmer, but the tradeoffs of longer, weaker, and more vibration seems to make little sense for a lot of applications.
@PhillyFixed
@PhillyFixed 3 года назад
Agree, if I was in the market for something in this class, I would just go with the Skil Pwrcore 12.
@Biaanca5036
@Biaanca5036 3 года назад
At this point I'd forgo the impact mechanism and just get an offset//multihead driver. They have the best _"this screw is too close to the corner"_ reach. Besides that ...the Makita subcompact even weighs a few ounces over 3 pounds with a 2Ah compact battery which doesn't make it any better for overhead use than a normal full-sized one
@El_Diablo_LI
@El_Diablo_LI 3 года назад
I kind of understand why this class of driver exists. I, like most others who have commented, prefer to use this driver for light tasks. I'm an electrician and this driver is great for assembling ceiling fans or even installing pulleys and switches. It's light, it's portable and feels great in the hand. I appreciate the fact that I don't need to get into a whole different battery platform just to get a light portable tool when about half of the things I do don't need the bigger heavier drivers like my Makita XDT16 which I love for bigger jobs. Having just one battery platform to deal with vs needing different tools, batteries and chargers is a big help. Yes, there are a lot of 12 volt options out there that might be a little smaller, more compact and even more powerful than this Makita 18 volt driver, but I find this option to be a great way to stay in a platform to can do everything I need it to do without cluttering up my truck with all sorts of different brands and battery platforms that are incompatible.
@ccbowers
@ccbowers 3 года назад
@@El_Diablo_LI Interesting feedback. I understand why a person wouldn't want to carry 12v and 18v, but what does this provide that your XDT16 doesn't? This subcompact actually has a longer body and not much less weight, so size doesn't seem to be the factor. If it is a sense of control in driving fasteners, I like the oil impulse, but I realize that is a pricier tool.
