@@a.edw.160 Through islands. I already saw it as a torp visual bug. Currently i can see shells go through islands but are not actually there.

Perhaps your pings that hit the islands are hitting some underwater terrain feature that juts out from the island itself as it goes underwater?

Yeah just like getting stuck in that piece of island underneath which I’ve been able to go through in a normal ships. Seems like even though the islands are drawn in 3D they actually take up the same amount of game space all the way up when it comes to subs.

I don't know man, for a little time playing the subs one can easily master that pinging thing and citadel everything. Look at the damage dealt by them to a full hp Bayern. Historical-wise, 1-2 torpedos maybe enough to sink giants but gameplay-wise... This will be broken. Im not talking about the damage numbers of the submarine player, think about the devastation you feel after getting 2 torpedo hits from god knows where as a battleship. This is not right. There is not an actual hard counter to a submarine if you do not have a DD in front of you. That said, most of the DD players are just torp-and-run type these days rather than being a support...

It's going to foster game play where dds do what they're supposed to do: screen for the fleet. CVs are going to have to help with spotting, too. It's an interesting idea. As a bb main, I am beginning to find subs more and more intriguing. I think this should discourage the camping meta as a sitting battleship will get ripped apart. This is potentially good for the dynamics of game play.

@@Scarheart76 POTENTIALLY, it is. But like I said most of the DD players these days dont even care about the team at all. The meta changes are always welcome in my side. I loved the CV changes too. Makes the game dynamic. If the subs play out like you said there will be no problem but I don't think the meta will change at all. We will just see destroyed BBs and Cruisers with no idea what is going on. I also am worried about CVs counter to subs. A sub can and will go around the map and hunt the CVs down as their location is more or less determined from the map layout.

Yeah, these homing double torps ignore Battleships that have armor layout and armor bulge designed to limit damage of torpedo hits. Surely the battleships with heavier armor and slow speed because of it should resist torp damage better.

Many early submarines only had deck guns so i expect low tiers to have them How effective they could be in combat i have no idea

Subs with only deck guns would be thrashed by everything other than merchant ships since a surfaced sub is a sitting duck for any vessel that has it's own guns. I've always been curious about how they would implement subs since they are not designed to go toe-to-toe with things. Maybe the low tier subs could have a use as carrier hunters.

@@krashd Clearly deck guns would not be used as a main armament but purely as a supplement to the massive torp burst damage and a way of at least offering a form of self defence against low health targets

13:45 that BB's nose had rock on both sides of it. Hence the ping fail - not sure about the stern ping.

sub torps should be like cv torps, lower damage but higher rate of fire, so the sub has more to do instead if waiting around 2 min

Hey Notser! Here are some scenarios you could attempt: 1. Sneak into enemy smoke for an ambush 2. Attempt to get behind enemy lines for a saboteur role

This is what I do...or I set up in a flank and look for targets too tunnel visioned to be looking for torpedoes from a submarine.

This game does not need submarines. As soon as there's a ww2 era naval game with surface ships campaign I'm gone.... May be here a while... sigh :/

Thanks for this. We got to see you pulling a Sub-Marine Notser™, for the first time ever. What an honour! Even in the Silent Hunter series, WW2 sub-vs-sub is awkward. Blind-fire torps are just simple weapons, meant to broadside surface-ships. Even later seeker/ acoustic/ magnetic torpedoes, or pattern-programmable torpedoes are-- literally-- hit-or-miss. Between the new super-carriers & possible submarines, I'm concerned that the skill-set for WOWS just jumped a good number of percentage points.

Hey Notser, the subs seem a little overpowered when the ping works and pretty frustrating when it doesn't, Do subs need homing torps? In my opinion, I don't think so. It might work if you removed the "homing" aspect and the torp damage nerf, and buffed the reload. Essentially torps go straight but do full citadel damage.

@@grimalkin6676 I can see wg thinking that however, I don't think it's that hard of a skill for good player's to take advantage of, even with the penalty of being detected while pinging. I definitely agree about dds spamming torps but subs, at least from what I've seen, only have a couple torps to shoot at any given time and then have to hide to wait for reload. I don't think a sub would be able to spam torps, even under ideal circumstances.

@@ryanmarquez9404 @David brings up a good point, I think wg is trying to incentivize the use of the ping feature with extra accuracy/damage while at the same time making the sub vulnerable to surface ships. It all depends on how they balance it, but my gut tells me good players are going to be extremely powerful in subs if they enter the game with stats similar to what they are now.

I know it may seem stupid but why dont the submarines not have their singular cannon? It would be a nice thing to have and obviously it wont be extensively helpful except for finishing off enemies nearby while surfaces, the submarine seems 100% helpless on the surface which seems wrong when at times you are forced to be on the surface

I don’t think it was a matter of it clipped the island. I think the ping hit the island underwater, because the terrain slopes and is not a flat vertical surface.

@@cinjonsmythe6318 but then the destroyer is almost useless if there is no submarine there, since you cannot know it in advance, it's like guessing if the destroyer protecting the battleship would have any point in the match or not.

That's the point. BBs sitting still at map edges and HE spamming cruisers hiding behind islands are going to get a torpedo up their ass. You need your DDs and carriers to find and attack the subs to keep them off you. And the DDs and CVs are countered by cruisers, who are in turn vulnerable to battleships.

DD's need only park on a sub to kill it, CV's need only bomb it once or twice even with rocket attack planes and the double ping requires broadside. Oh my god it sounds like you need brains for this class how terrible.

Where is the fun in being insta killed by a dd having a boring time as an ss? and most of all how fucking hellish will it be for us BB players who can just hope that our team will kill them for us?

If it is alowed to target the Ventral hull of a ship then it gets even more broken as there is not armor protection there.

@Notser, I need to confirm this, but I believe that whenever you PING a ship, you get highlighted on the minimap for the target by a swirling white circle.

There were torpedoes in WWII that left no bubble trail. Maybe that's a national trait kind of mechanic.

Electric torps. They were harder to see, but much slower. And subs should have the option to ammo-switch to DWT.

For every sub on a team, there needs to be 2 ASW ships, so if 1 sub, 2 DD's. If 2 subs, 4 DD's. This makes the DD the most important ship on a team. Yes, the biggest bug is the inability of a CL or CA to do damage to a sub. And it was fun watching Notser doing an underwater Notser!

Very few examples exist during WWll of sub v sub, it should be very difficult to hit another sub with torps. The sub will play it's part as a stealth sniper.

I would say thats not a bug so much as realistic behavior for sonar equipment or even radar since all your ping sees is one massive return coming from both ship and island.

Sonar ping is basically a sound wich can get echoed from a massive object like an island. So being unable to sonar ping a ship next to a island can be realistic. But since in WoWs radar can detect things behind a mountain. Everything possible.

Why don’t we activate the secondary arms on subs? I know wg didn’t thing they would do much, but imagine those few close range encounters with any enemy sub when you both surface but can’t torp each other

WG won't implement deck guns yet. Th y want to focus more on the primary gameplay (diving & surfacing, torps & pings, as well as the ASW)

My questions so far 1) can deck guns and AA work as secondaries? 2) if you reach max depth does the sub loose hp due to water pressure on the hull? If not then it should it would make it more realistic 3) do you have rear torpedo tubes? Also idk about you guys but I won't be using the homing thing, maybe on a DD but not on other ships, I mean losing a fuckton of hp to jus 2 torps isn't fun , especially when they penetrate your citadel

I can answer number 3 yes there will be torpedos in the back and I think I think you will take damage from pressure under the limit

1) Hopefully they add deck guns at some point. They wouldnt do shit to larger ships, but it could be a way to fight other surfaced subs. You could switch to guns automatically when you surface 2) would be cool if there isnt a definitive maximum depth, but rather you take more and more damage the deeper you go below 50m. 3) also cool idea, maybe without the homing ability :)

NOTSER... Ships often hide against Islands to blend sonar into the sea shore wave sounds... it's a real life thing they're attempting to build into the game imo to allow smart ship captains to counter subs... SO NOT A BUG PAL

I think they should be allowed to go deep to dodge depth charges. The deeper you go the more oxygen you use and maybe some health?, and at like 100 meters you run the risk of crush depth and instantly dieing.

With the subs in the game, they need to add depth charge capability’s to the destroyers in order to balance things out. The way it works now makes subs completely OP. I think adding Depth Charge capability’s to destroyers would increase communication between teammates and would see the battleship play style completely change. It would be more likely to see destroyers escorting their battleships to protect the firepower needed for surface ships. Also deck guns for subs needs to be an option. Firing your torpedos essentially puts you out of the game entirely for 2 minutes. Deck guns would provide a way to harass larger surface ships while waiting for the torpedoes to reload. Overall the submarine mechanic needs to be changed in many ways in order for the game not to be broken. Submarines are something I’ve wanted in World of Warships for a while. I think subs will make each game more strategic than it is currently because of the fact that battleships are very vulnerable to them, and you need battleships to deal with the larger surface ships. Depth charges would make subs less OP and would provide the game with more strategy.

Yep. And the island is wider under water. the ping could have hit rock before reaching the Vessel. May be an additional defense strategy.

I could see sonar having trouble locking on with the background reflectivity noise of an island. Aircraft radar have similar troubles “seeing” targets low against terrain background noise.

Being next to an island would help you camouflage. Being in the open your sonar ping from the ship would come back with little to no interference as a silhouette, if you are to close to an island, the difference between the return ping from the ship and the island may be to close to to see a clear silhouette of the ship.

Yep ships can ram you in Periscope level and some Marines can ram each other underwater

I think they should havenit where you can use your deck gun when surficed, it might be a 75mm but thatll still do alittle bit of damage

I can understand the frustration of not getting the pings while they're next to an island. And I'm not sure that it's actually a bug. Underwater acoustics are a tricky subject and hard to tackle in games. When it comes to active sonar, a ping like that could actually just been seen as the island if they're that close to it. It would be difficult to differentiate The BB from the island. Thanks for showing the submarine gameplay though. Great to watch and I hope they do something to counter it more. From you showed, it could be difficult to destroy a submarine unless you caught them on the surface.

I believe that the ping system after the launch of the torpedo is a system too intelligent for the historical period in which it is, and in any case not even if the effectiveness seems good does not do justice to the submarine, I played a lot last year with submarines during the events and the free and calculated launch system as the destroyers was good, but in addition I would implement in the submarines also a radar system capable of intercepting the ships on the surface, so that the sub marine can also launch torpedoes from high sea depths, but creating a more complex calculation system such as the shooting of battleships and cruisers, calculating the distance but also the hull of the ship, so that the player can develop a torpedo launch skill from the depths.

Looks to me that they oversized the island ping collision instead of undersized (I.e. a partial clip should still travel). This would also account for the island hugging ship’s immunity to pings.

Considering the influence DD player skills have on their teams' success rates, it look like this would be the same but even more pronounced. I don't want this in the game. I can only hope that sonar is as absurdly efficient counter to submarines as a submarine would be a counter to a battleship. On the plus side, that would be great news for the German BBs! :)

DDs and CVs hunt subs. Cruisers counter those with DPS and AA. BBs blow cruisers to bits, but are vulnerable to subs. Subs now provide the balance to OP carriers, because they have to worry about getting snuck up on. Same thing with HE spamming cruisers behind islands. Cancel the cancer!

Subs haven’t released yet and whatever they do they can change later. Even with all the complaints I’m sure there are other players like me who agree. Subs may seem op right now but they are also a work in progress. Also thanks for showing me some sub gameplay. Can’t wait to try myself one day. One thing tho that I disagree with is that I actually really like the whole if they are close to the island it won’t work. I hope it isn’t a bug

There’s obviously a LOT of work to do but I was expecting worst from WG At this state it can be at least somewhat “balanced” from here on out. Yes they’re a hard counter to BBs but that’s the point. SUBs feasted upon large ships historically. But there should obviously be more counter play besides just DDs..

Does the target receive any indication that he has been pinged? And maybe subs need the hydro consumable to detect things on the surface outside proximity range.

Yes, he does. And the position of the SS is revealed on the minimap too.

Why being close to an island should make you immune to pings is that the island and ship return the ping together. How is the torpedo supposed to differentiate between such a sonar return?

Ok the subs need a skill mechanic. So they choose the homey-aim-sonar-thing that requires you to aim!. Why? Torpedoes already have a aim based skill mechanic. Why does this need to exist?

Because you only get 4 shots that take over a minute to reload, no health to speak of and 21kts is very slow. The class does not seem broken given the crippling weaknesses it has. EDIT: Let's add in the weakness to DD's, the need for a broadside target and the way subs get highlighted on the map every time they ping a target. Subs can do 30k volleys. Just like a BB can. They give up a lot in order to do this.

@@4Funand4You Shows just how much WG has devolved this game into a giant DAMAGE farming exercise. DMG numbers shouldn't be the be all and end all of the game and the only way to get EXP and CREDITS. Subs will only be balanced as long as the meta changes from DMG farming solo play.

Besides that island problem, the gameplay looks quite promising. At this point, I'm just waiting for the Surcouf to become the ultimate submarine chaser and tricking DDs into fighting against it.

Well as for the sub vs sub point, the pings should just last on the sub even if it submerges and sub torps should also be able to home up- and downwards as well, not just sideways. That way you could actually hit/sink enemy subs. Of course there should be a limiting factor how fast they can adjust/turn just as on the surface, so that if you submerge early enough or fast enough you can evade them. But that's up to balancing really. After all I guess different subs/nations will have different values for not only how fast they can move but also how deep and fast they can submerge. Also differently agile subs can can turn tighter and follow the target more but deal less damage and all that stuff. Lots of fun.... but I'm still very concerned about the ASW topic. Are there any sort of depth charges in the game yet?

For sub to sub underwater it should be that you have to get 3 pings for any type of chance at a hit.

Notser, I don't think that the ping is wider than the ui shows, instead, I think it's the terrain, just as you don't have to connect with the visible land in a ship to run aground in many frusrating situations in the game, i bet the ping is doing the same.

That thing with "close to island" is the same bug that game have more than 2 years ---- when you shoot at ship that hit island ( you know put Notser ) your shoot will go under or above ship, it will miss ship like you don't have mark over him as a target ... That is a game braking bug that no one is talking about, just try it - same postion as that New Mexico and you try to hit him with another BB 10 or more km away

Well, IRL a target within 1/2 of a pulse width (whatever that is....) of another sonar target, in this case the island, would not be resolvable as a separate object by a pulsed sensor. Still probably a bug in the game sense.

Maybe after pings on both ends torpedoes should not completely ignore torpedo protection. Like the torpedo protection should be decreased 5 times

Kriegsmarine had some acoustic Torps. US subs had electric torps with no propeller wake. And Hedge Hogs to T8 DDs and up. Does Sonar works against Subs? Also I better never see a Nipponese Sub sink an USS Indianapolis (CA-35). I'd like to see sub rest on the bottom too for hiding. Ping should be deleted, no sub pinged lest it wants to give away it position. DD T7 and up should have passive sonar.

What will the BBs do, when confronted with unavoidable, citadel hit scoring heavy 9km torps from invisible sources? a) Go into 2ndary range (8-10km) and duke it out at the front line? b) hide in the back of the map, >17km from the HE spammers, DDs - and now - subs? GJ WG

Homing torpedoes, unable to fire on the surface, and crazy high speed. This is not the submarine experience we wanted Wargaming. This is worse than the original Carrier changes.

they really need to enable deck guns preferably manual firing but even if they treat it as a secondary better then none. And quite right there needs to be a way to fight sub vs sub other than ramming

Subs should be able to use the deck gun to deal with enemy subs. At the very least the deck gun should automatically fire like a ship secondary gun but manual control would be better..

Im not against the high alpha but I feel like ships other than DD should have depth charges, instead of a class having depth charges ships that had them historically and have models for it should be able to use them in game I believe there are depth charges on ships like the flint/atlanta and cleaveland etc.
