Succession - The Coercive Nature of Power

This video essay reviews HBO's Succession, starring Brian Cox as Logan Roy. Succession is an examination about power and in this character study, we take a look at three key scenes that showcase some of the best writing in television right now; the vote of no confidence scene, the boar on the floor scene, and the boat scene. Power has a way of coercing and manipulating people. This video breaks down the psychology of the characters in Succession.

Definitely excited. I really enjoy Kendall's character arc. Excited to see how the characters split into groups. I expect it to get rather Machiavellian as well, and I know those insults will be priceless. In fact I actually wondered about the psychology of why some insults hurt more than others. So I researched it a bunch. It was a blast to make and had me laughing the whole time, so I made a video breaking down the science of why some insults hurt more than others. Who knew there was a whole section of psych science devoted to studying insults? Looking forward to pretty much everything in season 3.

I think the Greg/Tom hierarchy is more complex than that. Greg is a blood relative, Tom is not and could be dumped from the family at any time. I think Tom is threatened by that fact, which is why he takes Greg "under his wing" to assert his power over him.

Illustrating how in the yacht sacrifice debate scene every character betrays another in a way which logically suits both their relationships and in a domino effect order delivered so quickly and succinctly resulting in Logan not even making a decision was an amazing analysis. That’s why I can watch this show over and over. By far the strongest, tightest, most intricate character writing of any show on TV, with an honorable mention to Saul, though I would consider that much stronger plot writing. Succession’s plot is important but it is one of those social realist, gray area plot styles where the characters basically are the plot, and to me that is the most inteiguing form of narrative, as at the end of the day we care far more about the intricacies of flawed human characters than we do about spectacle and explosions and thrills.

Lol you should hear them try an Australian accent with a native ear. I’ve heard Brits do it well (Dev Patel and Kate Winslet were particularly good at Australian accents IMHO), but not Americans. @@robweissman5952 MacFadyen is great as Tom but its pretty immediately clear even to someone that has never watched him on film before that he is not American. Many good English actors try to do a passable American accent (Dominic West in the Wire, Andrew James Clutterbuck of Walking Dead, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Whistleblower, etc) and may sound like Americans to someone with an untrained ear or to someone who doesn't live in the US. However, their accents don't fool anyone who has spent time studying American dialects across the US.
@robweissman5952
@robweissman5952 2 года назад
@@JewJiutsu I've spent my full life of 43 years living in America, none of those years have been studying speech, merely making and listening to it... Tom does have a certain quality to his speech that many have pointed out is - unique. (I think it adds to the performance) But, if I met character Tom on the street, I'd just assume he was a fellow 'Murican... When I hear other Americans try and speak British it always seems off to me.. (With a few exceptions.. Forest Whitaker in the Crying Game and Alessandro Nivola in Laurel Canyon coming to mind first) .. But maybe I'm just not all that observant?

I don't agree that power and corruption shows us someone's true character. It implies that we all have this dark side to us that is ready to jump out at the right opportunity. I think a better view would be that nobody is safe from the corruption of power. No one is immune to it, but this isn't because we don't know who we actually are and power shows us that. I think that's a very grim way to look at people and our nature.

They don't know why they want what they want, they don't have any solid values, and they lack the ability to build real interpersonal relationships. Give someone like that power, which shields them from the material & legal consequences of their actions, and... well, if you gave a toddler a machine gun in a crowd we know what would happen. The toddler is the adult, the power/wealth is the machine gun

@Just an observation He’s referring to the Netflix T.V show Money Heist a.k.a La Casa De Papel. The plot revolves around a group of ragtag thieves who attempt to rob the National Mint and Timbre ( Monetary Agency of Spain) at the behest of their leader El Professor. Plenty of twists and turns, highly recommend viewing it.

Logan is a lot like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood. Daniel Plainview was also surrounded by shitty people who did not deserve better treatment.
