Kendall can’t lie to himself like the rest of them so he is prone to breakdowns and relapses when looking at his actions for what they are and what they say about him.

Even though he's not the member of family who has done the least ateocities, he's the "least bad", maybe even more than the uncle, which is an hypocrite as far as we know, while Kendall is always questioning and drowning in his own actions, constantly changing by going through stages of grief and maniac episodes. He's the only one I think will be an actually good person by the end

I don’t believe that Kendall is exactly who he is strictly because of his father and so on and so on. If that were the case then everyone of his children would be exactly like him. Which they are not, except for the fact that yes they are greedy. But they don’t break like Kendall, I believe they are stronger than him . There are many many families where two brothers who have the same exact father ! & were treated the same way, go in complete opposite paths. One takes the good path, well the other Goes down a completely different road. So you cannot always blame the parents for how the child turns out.

@@sunnydaze2359 Birth order is a big deal. Especially when you're perceived as The First Born Son and expected to be a fully capable heir apparent. It's a lot to put on a child's shoulders. Also, being "strong" in the way say Shiv is is what I would call Being cut off from your soul. There are theories in psychology that say that a person can Look psychologically healthier if they repress their authentic needs so well that they don't seem to exist. That's Shiv. But, these theories continue, it's actually healthier to feel your messy feelings. That means they're not completely repressed or "frozen out of awareness" as my late husband put it in his writings. So the person that looks like a hot mess in this manner of thinking is actually closer to finding a healthy version of themselves. They feel their feelings, they just can't manage them. That's the next step. Shiv would have to first realize that she has needs and vulnerabilities too, then go through the messy phase, then learn to manage her feelings. She's deeper in denial. Imo. But then I don't see drug addiction as a weakness, though it can become that. I see addiction as a person searching for the good feelings they would have naturally if they knew how to securely attach, give love and receive love. Ken turns to drugs as the initial comment suggests because he's less able to live in denial. In certain ways, that's a good thing. But it's messy.

Kendall was sort of onto something when he said he was a better person than his father. He has remorse and empathy and he has a piece of his humanity left. He craves genuine connection and love and would never be able to substitute that with money and power like Logan does. But he is not a good person, and that notion destroyed him because at this point he doesn't have anything else. And he doesn't have anyONE else either, it's incredibly sad.

I don't think he's better, the fact that Logan has the NRP (No Real Person) philosophy is a reassurance for Kendall that he's a victim. He gave up when he finally realised the public rejected his "good billionaire" PR image.

One thing I've noticed after rewatching the show is that the only time Logan is genuine is when he's berating, smacking or firing someone. Every word or action throughout the entire show is done with ulterior motives. His children don't trust him and they don't trust each other. I'm often puzzled reading through comments about the show where people are constantly criticizing the Roy kids and barely a word about their parents. In my opinion, Connor has the right idea, just stay away and don't get involved.

I had to stop the video and say this. Abuse doesn’t make you strong, abuse lives a scar in your soul that can be very hard to get rid of, if you knew much about it, you’d know that. Sure looking at Logan Roy you might think he’s strong but actually he’s pretty pathetic. He doesn’t see the value in any relationship that isn’t competition. Like he said “I fucking win”. I can’t even imagine what kinda damage that mindset does to a person. Logan is bitter, like he said he’s always bored, he can’t even step down from the company at 80 years old because he’s afraid he’d die without having that competition in his life. Logan is only strong in that he’ll do whatever it takes to win but he’s never considered the fact that winning has never brought him any real happiness or at least not for a very long time. Logan is literally just in autopilot, the things he does, don’t really benefit him but he does them anyway because that’s all he knows and he’s never had to learn any new lessons since he got his empire.

Healthy and strong aren’t the same. Logan is strong but his world view/relationships aren’t healthy. You can say what you want about his type of ultra competitive parenting not being healthy but the vast majority of top athletes/top professions have parents that have that type of style. It’s pretty obvious why these top people most have these types of parents… and sure these top people are only a tiny percentage of the total kids raised this way… it still goes to show that a more normal/healthier parenting style isn’t really conducive for highly competitive professions/goals.

@@acceleration4443 I don't know that you need to treat your whole life as a competition just so you can be a great athlete, sure a lot of them can't compartmentalize but at least with athletes your career has an end date and it's usually before you hit 40. Logan was an 80 year old man still acting like a child because he never had to learn to be any better, you can call it strong if you want but I think it's pretty pathetic

@@acceleration4443 ultimately though a person cannot be strong without also being healthy, because if one is not healthy - that is to say sick - either physically or mentally, that means that they are also weak in that regard. Logan has strengths, and in many categories he is certainly far stronger than the average person but overall, as a complete and secure individual, he is not strong. He is very vulnerable in certain areas precisely because he is unhealthy. And I think that his bad physical health in the show, the one thing he cannot fix despite all of his money, is more than a little symbolic in that regard.

And yes, Logan wins but if you look at season 3, at this time its more because of other peoples actions than his.

The witty dialogue sometimes distracts of the intergenerational abuse. And the fact that all the kids have insecure attachment, which causes a void they fill up with ambition and defense mechanisms, like sarcasm, open relationships (in this case), addiction, sexual obsession... Kendall...I feel for. You can see the vulnerable child shining through. After all he just wants his dad's love and approval...so much he cannot be there for his own kids.

Technically they're not even his own kids. Sophie is adopted and Iverson is Rava+Sperm donor. Ultimately they have the Roy name and Kendall has the father role (although rarely fulfills it) but they are not his bloodline. Taking care of kids you call your own is just not the same as having kids of your own blood in your resemblance. This is a biological and psychological truth (yes there are exceptions but that is the minority). Maybe Kendall knows this subconsciously it's guided him to take this half measure for the "best" of both worlds. Having children of his own would weigh even more responsibility on him which he might not be able to handle especially if he's negligent to them. However he can be more detached and has been because they're not actually his children but when he wants to be involved he can step into the facade play the father role. Obviously he still loves the kids although a half measure like this, especially if guided by his subconscious, is in line with him constantly lacking the grit to fulfill his ambition

what’s most horrible (read: impressive) is how the writers are able to establish him, and the other roy siblings, as their “own worst enemies” in such a way that all of their self-destructive actions, and the consequent fallout that ends up leaving others in pseudo-murder-suicide crossfire, reveals itself as their parents influence. it’s like all their abuse has embedded parasites in their brains who continue to feed on them even though they are grown. it’s so heartbreaking, seeing how much violence their parents are able to inflict on them even when they aren’t there. we just keep waiting for them to cure themselves of it even though we are constantly reminded that they’re too far gone to be saved. i think that’s why we see the “kid versions” of them in the credits each episode, it reminds us that what we are really watching is what can happen to a child when love is only ever offered conditionally. because while they /do/, they don’t know /how / to feel any kind of emotion or experience any person/thing in and for itself. everything has a price, everything is a game, everything is to an end, they were never allowed to just let something exist purely or simply, and it has made their experience of the world deeply, deeply fractured.

Very well said... I had never thought of childhood abuse being like a parasite that embeds itself into consciousness and silently but inexorably destroys its victims throughout their lives. I agree that it is heartbreaking - just as it is tragic and terrifying. Ultimately it's an accurate metaphor for their fictional circumstances and behaviors (as it is for so many real-world adults still tortured by their own childhood abuse and trauma). Though I've read and agree with much of Dr. Gabor Mate's theories about the role addiction serves in people's lives, I was glad to hear him referenced in this video essay. The parasitic inevitability of their self destruction, as you so eloquently framed it, has given me a slightly different lens through which to view them and others like them. All in all, i love when i stumble upon such intelligent and empathetic discussions about this world and the flawed people in it... But now i must stop and get a few hours of sleep before i doze off and accidentally do a face plant into the hard floors.

Amazing analysis, so much better than other Ken videos I've seen. Like another commenter said, a Shiv video would be lovely. I think there is a lot to be discussed and analyzed with respect to her gender while competing in arguably a "man's" world. Like Logan says, something along the lines of how he thinks she could do it but the rest of the world doesn't. Shiv is perceptive and knows that possibly she isn't actually the best candidate for the head role, which causes her a lot of cognitive dissonance.

Even though I won't say Kendall is a good person...he still listens to his conscience and tries to do the right thing. He cares for his children and loves his siblings...Kendall even loves his father and mother despite everything. He just seeks affection and understanding from them. Meanwhile, Shiv is an interesting character because in my opinion...she is the sibling who resembles Logan the most. Just the way she sees relationship, and behaves towards others like a mean to get something. But Logan doesn't notice her because in his mind none of his children are good enough and Shiv has betrayed him in multiple occasions (which she had the guts to do it unlike her brothers) Roman...Roman is a special case and the one I take pity of the most. He is literally a child trapped in the body of a 30 year old man. His father treats him the worst out of his siblings...even beat him in one scene (and implied that it wasn't the first time) and let's remember how he said how he didn't like being the "caged dog" while playing as kids and the others laughed it off.

I also think Shiv is the most similar to Logan. She even jeopardizes her own husband to put herself in a better position. (The conversation at the hatch where they pick someone to go to jail, Shiv actually agrees that Tom is the best option... To his face). Another event that comes to mind is when Caroline tells Shiv that her dad never loved something that he couldn't kick to see if it'd come back later. Later that night, Shiv goes home and tells Tom she doesn't love him during foreplay.

I always thought it was kinda the point that he constantly tries to mimic his dad but fails at it. He has moments of competency but the crippling weight of living up to his father doubled on by never getting his father's approval and of course the kid he killed holds him back. Hes a perfect example of fake it till you make it

One of my favorite things about this show is that you can see the precise moment that Logan decides he's definitely not giving the company to each one of his kids. Shiv's was when she begged him to save Tom Roman's was asking for Gerri to take over

Great video, dude. You really understand the themes at play in the show. Just wanted to say that I think you need to work on your audio. Your microphone seems to clip/peak quite a lot and has a lot of crackle, and sometimes when you begin a new section, it is quite quiet for the first syllable. I can't tell if this is an editing thing or just you leaning closer to the mic, but it's a little distracting. Good work, though.

All the kids need to wash themselves of their father. I was on the episode when he had the stroke and when he woke up, I swear I went “goddammit! How?!”. He doesn’t love them and he never will. I laugh at this show sometimes but it’s just really fucking sad

the end of season 3 gives us a little hope.. at least he got his sibings and they accepted him as he said the worst thing he has ever done( and shiv and roman got fucked by the same people that stopped them for joining kendall in the end of season 3)

The thing is, Logan is 81 & in terrible shape, physically, mentally, & emotionally. He’s already had one stroke, how long do these children think he is going to last. I think your best that would be to just wait it out. They are all fairly young anyway, so they will need maturity in order to run that business. I don’t think they need to be in such a rush. I’m not saying that they should put a banana peel on the steps though. 😂😂😏

@@uhuhuh1966 I think at this point ken doesn't even want to be ceo anymore( Jeremy Strong has said this too). And we all know that what they really want isn't even the position but Logan's approval, so I think before Logan passes there will be a lot of drama about this. In the script for 3x9 I read that Shiv had a line( excluded from the episode) about using what Ken said as a leverage so I'm afraid this maybe will happen in s4( they using it to motivate kendall to doing what they want) but I really want to see them together :(

Excellent! Fantastic insights and information. I think the idea that if you pay attention to addicts you'll find a history of trauma is very important. We've been getting away from our understanding of the power of trauma in our ways of thinking about addiction. You've done a great job showing how Logan's efforts to toughen his children were excessive enough to leave them emotionally disabled. I feel like I see the effects of abuse in sharper relief because of hearing your detailed analysis. I'm not sure if we'd want Ken to be a "Killer" like his malevolent father. The problem is he doesn't really know who he is and he can't assert himself because his trauma at his dad's hands has left him with fear in his core being. It's a terrible thing to do to one's children, demand that they prove themselves as individual but don't let them individuate, require them to be strong after you've spent their early years breaking them. He has put them in an incredible Catch 22. When it comes to raising his children, he's gotten nothing that he wanted. He did it all wrong. But as a devilishly smart narcissist he'll win every argument and always project the blame onto his victims, his own children, who are exactly as weak as he made them.

As far as one can be certain of the motivations of a fictional character, I am certain I know why Logan treats his kids the way he does. He's a narcissist. Narcissist parents use their children to extend their own lives. Furthermore, morals and ethics are irrelevant to a narcissist. To a narcissist, they have never done anything truly bad or wrong, but in reality, they do terrible things all the time, then just lie about it and move on. I think narcissism is a psychological defence mechanism that often arises from abuse in childhood, but outside of that, I think you're giving Logan too much credit.

I have this theory, that for years Kendall has been secretly recording his family and especially his father. So when is father says awful things like NRPI no real person involved, Kendall has all that on some file somewhere and is waiting for the perfect time to give the kill strike

This video is interesting, love the script and how you explain it. However having to be a killer is pretty confusing and weighs you down. For example if your boss is saying and obliging that you don't deserve a raise do you act as a killer and bogg him down of his weaknesses and shortcomings try to prove your own worth the Sweat and tears you've put in to your work but with the risk of losing everything you've been so far. I think you have to pick a time and place to be a killer be patient take some shit from your superiors and strike when the time is right. Kendall chose the correct time and place but failed to strike when he should have.

I think it more or less has to do with the fact Kendal is entitled and deeply still needs validation from the world. He is emotionally unstable and has break downs because of this. A killer… is someone so emotional disconnected and disconnected from their humanity that ending a life is no big deal to them. Kendal isn’t that.

He doesn’t want any of his children to take over that much is clear. He constantly sabotages them especially Kendall. But it’s def his parenting style that created children who doesn’t trust anyone and only knows how to back stab each other. He knew passing it on to them would mean self destruction so why not cash out. Sadly the children did not see this and wanted his empire back. They should have went on to in Logan’s words “make your own pile” of money and stop leeching off his legacy.

So...if I get this right, Kendall can't be a killer, because unlike his father, who forsook the idea of connections, and is only using them as a means to an end, Kendall, and to an extension, his other siblings, constantly seek out connections with their father, which is why Logan is not viewing Kendall as a killer.

I felt the entire Show (all seasons) that the writers were trying to say Kendall’s level of Humanity was his biggest weakness. He’s show mercy at the wrong times and push too hard other ones. He wasn’t a Snake he was kind honarable.

And it was Kendall’s overwhelming guilt and remorse that shows that Kendall is NOT a “killer” like the rest of his family. @@Bean31600 I was hooked with the first episode. It might seem quite dry, but I find that only adds to the realism of the characters and the situations of the show. Highly recommended if you want a deep, disturbing character study hidden within a fantastic business drama.

I just watched In the aisles, really good movie on Amazon and Rosetta on HBO I think two really good movies Rosetta is a little older but just kinda slow moving character based movies that are both heartfelt a little sad but lovely.

To play devil's advocate: It is also possible to analyze the show differently. Logan Roy is an absentee father who was a workaholic and never present for his children. This was aggravated by them being children of divorce. Logan was an old school parent (like many of us from the Gen X generation experienced) who did not coddle or nurture his children. But, Logan was not extremely or uniquely abusive and is not solely responsible for the people that they have grown up to be. The entire show is a story of a very ruthless and insensitive father pitting his adult kids against one another to figure out which of them is capable of taking over the family empire. He pits them against each other as competitors for a huge job that not a single one of them is qualified for or capable of performing. The entire show is an indictment of extreme wealth, oligarchy, and privilege. None of the kids live up to the challenge and ultimately Roman admits that "they are bullshit" and gives up.

The old cliche is ubiquitous these days hard times > strong men > easy times > weak men. Notice there is no mention of the good man. What sort of times would create good men? What times would create wise men? Not part of the cliche. The cliche is only about strength and weakness. Of course it is better to be strong than weak if these are the only two choices.

12:41 Gil told shiv he wanted to destroy her dad. Logan built an empire from nothing. If the kids think they are as capable or smart as they claim to be then why don't they start their own company? The kids are basically worthless...it's like Logan told them " what do you have, that I didn't give to you?" The 4 children are snakes just like Logan called it. They constantly want to take from Logan what he worked so hard to build.

It’s not stated but my guess is that Ewan loaned money/invested in one of Logan’s early business acquisitions and was repaid in shares. As the company grew, the shares become very valuable.

love the show but cant get over the fact that Jeremy Strong looks nothing like the rest of the cast so is hard for me to buy the idea that he is Logan's son; for me is a not so good casting choice for the rol, more in a show about family dinamics like Succession
