@@maksphoto78 I actually don't think that ciliate's membrane broke, to me it looks like as it was dying something about the movement of the cilia was causing the membrane to form that weird kink in the middle, maybe because the cilia's movements were disjointed, while the rest of the cilia lost the ability to move at all

organisms that are so totally different from their relatives but still grouped together because of some anatomical consistency at some point in their life that links them together are super cool. see: tunicates (our invertebrate cousins!), parasitic barnacles (which shed most of their recognizable crustacean anatomy upon finding a host), and myxozoans (basically jellyfish relatives that evolved into microscopic parasitic "worms", but are still cnidarians because they have cnidocytes)

Oh wow. These guys are like the sea-living tunicates in the macro world. Tunicates are invertebrates, but part of the chordate phylum, because as a larval tunicate, they have a notochord. Once they find a spot to settle down, they stick to the substrate, lose the notochord, and start filtering water like a sea sponge.

As far as I understand, Ciliates/Ciliophora is a proper taxon/monophyletic group: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciliate So, even if some suctorian species stopped being ciliate-like in its baby stage, phylogenetically it would still be considered a ciliate, because it descends from the last common ancestor of all ciliates.
