Even Rarer still in Japanese game development, considering the horror stories of work related illnesses and suicides in the anime, games, and manga industries (and Im assuming others, we're probably just not as privy since they just aren't exports)

It's actually nice to see he's the kind of boss who acknowledges his team are human, and therefore you shouldn't work them to death, or shame them for not working enough. That's way more healthy than most work environments. It makes it pretty unique in the industry, too. Well done SUDA51 for only being a mad genius, but also not being a dick to your staff. Managers at Ubisoft, Gearbox & CD Projekt could stand to learn a thing or two by that example 😁
@Devilm00n
@Devilm00n 4 года назад
To be fair I don't think you can compare Suda and Grasshopper with such big companies. I think crunch is something that should be erased from every industry, however GHM never put out something even close to the scope of the games which some bigger companies routinely put out; If we as consumers want the next big thing always here and now, companies become forced to rush through production in order to ship in the smallest timeframe possible, for example look at what happens every time a game gets delayed by even only a few months, the most egregious example being TLOU2 with the internal leak following the decision. Again, I'm not condoning the practice, and even when teams are put through extreme crunch you can end up with mediocre games, but I don't think there has ever been a universally acclaimed game developed by a big studio where the team didn't go through a (possibly quite long) crunch period.
@gargaj
@gargaj 4 года назад
They all SAY that. Ask the actual people working there how much of it is true.
@SuperHansimann
@SuperHansimann 4 года назад
@@Devilm00n If you manage to convince investors you might be able to. CD Projekt Red has delayed Cyperpunk twice in order to finish it 100%. Don't know if they still crunch or not, but they pay for that game out of their own pocket.
@asteria9963
@asteria9963 4 года назад
@@Devilm00n Not an excuse. Mismanagement is mismanagement. If the scope is too large, you're biting off more than you can chew. Management should be fired for this. Instead, they receive bonuses. Consumers can be taken out of the picture by providing sensible release dates. Besides, nobody listens to us anyway, so why care? The industry is the one creating all these problems, and then it uses them to justify those practices. Who turned people into graphics whores? The industry. Who feels the need to rush everything out the door? The industry. Who hypes up a game several years before its release? The industry. All these wounds are self-inflicted, and the absolute last thing I will do is defend any of it. It is a good thing that more people start caring about fighting crunch. It's inhumane, and those that enforce it are sociopaths.
@Devilm00n
@Devilm00n 4 года назад
@@SuperHansimann CDPR is known for its culture of crunch, it was there for The Witcher and even more so now for Cyberpunk. The problem is that even with delays and a release several years after the announcement, teams have to go through crunch nonetheless to meet expectations from the consumers and deadlines for launch windows.

I was so affected by No More Heroes back in 2008 that Suda became an idol of mine and I love watching him every chance I get. I played Killer7 when it came out on Steam in 2018 after watching footage from it for years and it surpassed my expectations, I absolutely loved it! If you guys are on the fence but have a feeling that you might like it, I say go for it because you'll most likely love it too. Also Suda, if you release a port of the PS2 version of Flower, Sun and Rain on Steam, I'd buy that shit.

I really enjoyed this interview. You always hear about how hardcore the work schedule is for game developers, and probably more so in Japan, so it’s great to see a company going a different route with their schedules. In addition, you often see Japanese developers portrayed as very stiff, serious, and businesslike. It’s nice to see a different side of that.

I admire Suda and Grasshopper so much for making videogames that are as fun as they are insightful, after playing Killer7 I couldn't believe what I just had been through, I was convinced that videogames could be and do so much more than entertainment and still be incredibly fun to play, then I played No More Heroes and is one of the most fun games ever made for the Wii, it made motion controls feel rewarding and a complement to the gameplay without hindering the gameplay, and the story takes a twist that makes it so much more than just killing, it's about killing the past, accepting the present and trying to be better to build a better future, but there's just so much more underneath the games they make and their themes. I can't wait for No More Heroes 3, I trust Grasshopper and Suda completely, I know they won't disappoint us, lots of love to everyone working there and I hope that them and their families stay safe

Its got too much of a shadow of what its meant to be going on with it for me to enjoy it, you can definetly tell shinji mikami and Suda wanted it to be completely different but executive meddling destroyed it, the entire section of travis strikes again feels like suda's coming to terms with what it ended up being.

Ough. I find the captions really difficult to follow on this doc, which is weird because I'm very used to reading captions (one of the "perks" of growing up in a country which English as 2nd language and very little dubbing :P ). There is no pause between them, so my eyes don't notice that they've changed (on TV, there's a frame with no captions in between two captions). And they change way too fast. And it feels like they don't progress the way I expect them to. Like, new sentences don't start when I hear Suda start a new sentence, and they are split up weirdly. Too bad, I would have liked to learn more about him.

I like that work/life balance isn't just emphasized but enforced. Overworking can come from not only direct orders but also from a perceived unspoken pressure, real or imagined. And even from oneself. Positive burnout is a real thing. When you love your work so much you don't feel like you are burning yourself from both ends but you are and that can actually hit even harder as you drive full speed into that wall.
