Neat review Sudhir! Minor correction. 4:55 It is Jaffer in that scene not Redin. Thank you for pointing about the ear cutting in the flashback. I also felt the dining table scene and the killing a goon infront of the family and giving a psychotic grin was making the kill look like a pleasure thing than a vengeance/duty thing.

@Sudhir Srinivasan, Rightly said. I too felt , a senior actor like Rajnikanth completely submitted himself to a new age director and didn't interfered in the storyline/screenplay. Last year Kamal did the same with Lokesh for Vikram. When such senior actors do such thing, more responsibilities fall on new age directors how well to utilise that opportunity and bring out the best from these seasoned actors so that both young and old audiences enjoy their performances. Nelson to some extent has done that in Jailer from Rajnikanth. Some of the women audience were shocked and surprised on the violence and bloodshed in this movie, which they generally don't expect in a Rajnikanth movie. It could have been toned down. They could have reduced the heist portion and had more scenes which establishes why all those reformed/released gangsters were supporting Rajni on his mission. It was just told in dialogues. Redin Kingsley was wasted in this movie, he was better utilised in recent Santhanam's DD Returns movie though. But, the combination scenes between Yogi Babu and Rajnikanth brings a smile on our face, especially the reactions by Yogi Babu. Kishore is wasted in a very brief role. Same for Jackie Shroff too. Vinayakan as Varma is menacing villain, but at times, his character is like a caricature. But, overall it's a good comeback for Rajnikanth after the last two duds Annathaey and Darbar. After, a very long time I enjoyed a Rajnikanth movie. If the second half could have been made better, it would have been a double treat. Anyway, a mass movie from Superstar after a long time.

If you have less expectations then the movie would do wonders for you. I loved every bit of it. Finally seeing Rajini doing a role of his age, not dancing and romancing with 20+ year old heroine and not doing stunt by fighting 100 guys. Infact Nelson had given him a sensible role. I am sure this movie would work any one who is sensible. Second half definitely had flaws no doubt but I felt Nelson had done a pretty decent job for Rajini.

Hey Sudhir!! I agree with your view! As an addition, yes second half was problematic and even more problematic one that I found was how Tamannaah’s name was renamed and why Redin Kingsley was named as Divya! I wonder if we had to laugh about it! So many things happened in the second half that made no sense, probably this was an addition to it!

Exactly Sudhir... Not much Impressive and The level he set in Doctor for his comedy, Jailer is nothing...

Jailer was good theatre experience, Nowhere near perfect. Enjoyed, second half though few sequences were silly, Did not get bored anywhere throughout runtime. For People wondering and thinking to watch any of previous works of Shivanna. Here is small guide from Lifelong Shivanna fan. Shivarajkumar Movies must watch movies, I have included blockbuster mass movies and also zero mass, great movies which were equally successful. That is Shivanna. - 1. Jogi (2005) - Shivarajkumar's best acting, according to me. It had record opening and collection. 100 days in 50 centres in Bangalore. It was remade in Tamil after Kannada. - 2. AK-47 (1999) - Shivanna's 50th Movie - Blockbuster, best Album, all songs are great. High Budget movie at that time. - 3. Chigurida Kanasu (2003). (Great acting, according to many Shivanna's best performance. Best movie if you want to watch, other than commercial mass. Zero mass, but memorable movie, based on Novel.) - 4. Tagaru (2018) - Recent Movie in this list. Duniya Soori directed. Best mass movie of Shivanna in last 10 years. Super Cop movie. Great Dialogues. - 5. Om (1995) - (First Kannada movie with underworld background where Protagonist plays rowdy or gangster, before this heroes never used to play rowdy). - More than 550 times release. I have watched this movie 17 times in theatre. It was fashion to watch 'Om' in theatres, even though when this was released I was 2 years old. I have seen this 17 times in re-release. - 6. Bhoomi Thayiya Chochchala Maga (1998) - Great movie, Great acting. Based on Dam building and politics around it. Must watch. - 7. Nammoora Mandara Hoove (1996) - Triangular Love story. Best Triangular love story movie in Kannada. - 8. Mufti (2017)- Very Good Movie. Just interval entry scene was worth theatre entry. I got my money back. No one matches Shivanna. Mass Entry. - This was remade as Pathu Thala in Tamil. - 9. Kaddipudi (2013) - (Duniya Soori, ganster movie. Realistic but still mass.) - 10. Janumada Jodi (1996) - (Rural drama, based on Gujarati Novel. Good movie, great acting. Zero mass. Talks about casteism. Initial Reviews complained, it as an art movie, who will see, but it ran for more than a year. Great songs, still people sing those songs.) - 11. Modada Mareyalli (1991) - It was Malayalam Kireedam remake, but Shivanna's performance is equally good. Shivanna was praised for his acting, known among his fans for his subtle acting. This is where you see glimpses of great actor that he is today. Old movies if interested - 1. - Anand (1986) - Debut movie as lead actor. Great dance, Shivanna is cute. College Story. Movie ran for 38 weeks. Greatest Debut in Kannada. 2. - Ranaranga (1988) - 80's revenge action drama, Great songs. Watch Shivanna Dance. First time great composer Hamsalekha Sir, composed for Rajkumar production. Later Hamsalekha sir gave so many good songs for Shivanna. Shivanna was being called, HATRICK HERO - because his first 3 movies were all Silver Jubilee(175 days) movies. After his 100 movies, people gave him moniker and started calling him - 'KARUNADA Chakravarthi' (Emperor of Karunaadu (Karnataka)).

I enjoyed the movie. It was like a full meal in a nice restaurant. In fact, this has been my most favorite since padayappa. Most of his recent movies have been disastrous. They just didn’t work for me including Sivaji, 2.0 and Petta. They were all kind of lost somewhere or the other. I went with zero expectations and got a bang for my buck. The second half changed gear a bit but I liked that it came completely unexpected. Whenever there was a lag, some unexpected event happens that keeps the audience guessing. Long movies are not my thing and I keep looking at my phone in such movies. Even PS1 didn’t capture my attention completely, but this one did. This was far better than annathe and I remember your review being more positive for that than this.

Hi Sudhir, I usually agree with your reviews but this one was an exception. I felt satisfied after watching this movie after a long time. Doctor and coco didn’t work for me . I felt they were partly dark humor but mostly it was absurd humor. With Regards to Rajni movies , pettas second half didn’t work for me at all . With Jailer, I felt the movie was a good package overall. Obviously a flawed movie but I felt happy coming out of a Rajni movie after a long time . When reviewing it’s important to look at the scope of the movie . I felt it was a great balance between Nelson and Rajni throughout. The second half turned gears a bit into a heist type movie threw people off a bit . But I personally liked that shift and I think it worked for most audiences as well. Felt exactly the same when I watched first.. my second time watch was theri mass… even after knowing all the twists.. the movie was fantastic.. just watch it the second time with audience just for enjoyment and don’t bring out the reviewer in you while watching.. this movie will work wonders…

I have a doubt. How come Ramya as a wife didn't know Rajini's background as jailer? When rajini started to be tame? And y everyone is trying to show rajini as young man? It doesn't fit him, looks alien.

While I really enjoyed the Sunil portion of the movie, I agree that it 100% doesn’t belong in this movie. It has no link to the rest of the story. But I found it pretty funny, so I’m fine with it. The second half as a whole is haphazard. It’s a bunch of random ideas thrown together. The first half is really cohesive, while somewhat repetitive.

You seem to have missed the demand by the antagonist. In the second half, Jailer was in the mission of the demand to get his son back, in a bid to do that, he had to deceive the actor B.Mohan .So, to intoduce that actor and how everything unfolds, are all relevant, eventually getting into the plot, leading up to climax. It was a right balance. Better watch again. It will convince, for sure.

In fact Jailer has similar plotline of Vikram; # retired cop / agent vengeance tale for his son but seems to lack any meaning in its characters. Lets say rajini was a menacing jailer, yet why would a criminal who has lost his ears or being scared of rajini in a jail send his men to help rajini. The films goals are very inconsistent throughout, COCO had a neat goal for nayanthara to save her mother, in Doctor the goal shifts but from saving one girl to all the girls, even in beast to a large extent the goal is to save the people from the hijacked mall, here in jailer initially it is to take revenge for his son, then save his son with a heist and then useless twist of a criminal son being served justice.

I think all the goods about the movie should be credited to Nelson and Rajinikanth. The flaws must be attributed to the business market and to a certain extent the image behind the super star. But still Jailer was certainly a better movie compared to Darbar, Annaatthe, and Beast. And it used its stars power (Shivanna, Lalettan, Jackie, and Sunil, Thamannah to certain extent.) well unlike Petta(Nawaz & Vjs). Definitely a solid comeback for both Nelson and Rajinikanth!

Doesnt matter who directs a Rajini film , it will always be a Rajini film , thats why Shankar failed in 2.0 and Ranjith failed in Kabali trying to not make a Rajini film and portray themselves bigger than Rajini ..... Rajjni even at this age is bigger than anyone in Tamil cinema .....

Hey man... It's just for the entertainment movie.... No need for all the aspect should be perfect..... I fully enjoyed the movie...Evan though there are some flaws.... Audience only goes for the theater to enjoy and reduce their stress for some hours...

Jailer- I can review the movie as a thalaivar fan and a Nelson movie fan. As a thalaivar fan, I throughly enjoyed the movie. Thalaivar looks so stylish . These Nelson style action suit him so well . The wit, the innocence. the swag., the comedy- it checks all the thailavar padam boxes . They have also paid tribute to some of the iconic characters of thalaivar himself with Thalaivar himself and I loved every bit of it. Thalaivar colabs with other industry super stars is also fab and adds extra mass to the sequences . The movie is Hukum, Tiger ka Hukum. Now coming to reviewing the movie as a Nelson movie fan; The story and screenplay is the Hero in Nelson’s movie and he has kept it that way here. It is not a new, never heard of kinda story but the screenplay is good! Some of the action sequences are really fantastic. But Nelson wanting to collaborate with actors from his previous movies and otherwise brings in not so necessary characters in the movie . This drags the movie a little bit and slows down the screenplay as well. It is a 10-15mins fast paced, 10-15mins drag. You figure . There is Nelson agmark dark comedy for sure , some are good but some most certainly could have been better. Doctor set the bar so high. He also had to include several superstar necessities which is nice and a visual treat as a super star fan and is Adrenalin rush moments but these also leave less room comedy so characters that do comedy just come and go. How I wish jailer, the flashback scenes could have taken some more screen space . Nelson movies also have really good action sequences . If your kids can differentiate good guy killing a bad guy for good reasons and killing lives in between and also having good guys who do good (May be bad stuff) as friends and bad guy killing good guys for bad reasons and also killing lives inbetween and both using extremely violent methods to kill and take bath in blood and still be ok and not be confused as to why? take them. Else trust me they are better off at home. Action sequences are good but are drenched in blood and there is so many killings and slaughter, human slaughter. Some of them are also repetitive. Music is everything we have heard in the trailer and promos. Bgm gives a lot of beast vibes . Summary Did I love the movie- Yes. Will you be entertained as a Thalaivar fan- Absolutely Yes Could I have waited for the movie on OTT- yes. Do I regret going first day - No. Do I wish the movie had a slightly better screenplay and character building (Jailer’s past in particular) and Nelson dark humor- Most certainly YES!
