It probably takes some adjustment going from being a sudoku super genius to being just regular above average at other puzzles. :)
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 2 года назад
@@peterpeladon I'm not sure he's merely above average, thinking about the benchmarks I've seen for first plays of this game, in that he's pausing to read superchats, has done 8 beams, listened to a full audio log, watched a full video, and done optional area that doesn't give you diddly squat for doing, all in about 7 and a half hours (3 ~2-hour streams, and 1 ~90-minute stream). He's not looking like he's going to be 100%ing the game, but I'd say he's comfortably in the 'main + extras' category at the moment, and on a pace that could see him finishing the game in the 'rushed' camp for main story only.

@@peterpeladon *Spoiler* First, he is not that experienced in video puzzle games, which results in less confidence. Second, sudoku is a game with clear rules, but in The Witness you have to guess the rules and fully understand them without any wrong mindsets. For example, Simon stuck on the gate beside the bridge, which is a simple black-white puzzle, because he thought that he couldn't separate the group of the same colour.

I know there's already a deluge of similar comments, but I'll go ahead and add to the noise: nobody is running in to a playthrough of *this game* (or *any* video on this channel, for that matter) expecting nonstop pulse-pounding action. This is a difficult game and even something as simple as moving around the environment can be very slow and deliberate. Take your time. We're here because we trust that you'll get these *eventually*. Sometimes that means standing still and thinking about the puzzle/scenario for a few minutes. That's okay. Please don't feel pressured that some viewers might be bored -- nobody that's here for a genuine experience is expecting it to be easy or straightforward.

It’s so funny how different people’s brains work. There are certain things that hung me up forever that he intuits so quickly. And then there are things that were obvious to me, that he just seems to stare in the face. There’s probably some moral in there about how we’re all special and unique or whatever.

It really illustrates to me how much having "video game knowledge" helps. I know Simon plays Starcraft, but I don't know how many other video games he plays. I found this to be so useful in this game since having this background knowledge just helps makes some things a lot easier in terms of what to look for and just how to solve the puzzles when I did my play through. It's really fascinating to watch at the beginning how he struggles so much environment puzzle because with video game knowledge, it's immediately obvious for me what to do because video games have a certain set of logic to them and it flows naturally. There is a really great video by Razbuten about making his wife , who doesn't play video games, play video games. It makes you really appreciate just how it can appear so baffling to some who just don't have that language built in.
@aloysiuskurnia7643

@sarelfeniel1388 2 года назад
@@aloysiuskurnia7643 Sadly I don't remember when / how I discovered these puzzles but I do wish I could remove that knowledge from the game and play again. I have some vague memory of finding it rather early but that may be because I just was clicking on everything just trying to figure stuff out and stumbled upon it by accident. But armed with that knowledge that it could be possible, the video game logic kicked in and then everything that looked even remotely odd stood out. It's like the puzzle atop the mountain. You can see exactly what it is trying to teach and if I saw that, I'd be thinking "what's the point of this? video games don't just put things here without reason. what's the reason." and then just know what things to look for. For Simon, who doesn't have this built in, it makes it a really fun watch. Moreso then solving the puzzles.

Once again, an absolute pleasure to watch Simon pretend like he's bumbling and floundering himself into record pace puzzle solving. This still holds up as one of the best LPs I've ever watched of The Witness and it really might be the platonic ideal of a The Witness LP. My timestamps (obviously, with spoilers): 06:57 "You see, that looks a bit like a puzzle…" 07:17 "I've been playing this over in the mind in the last few days because this is just mental. I have a feeling I have completely missed the point of this whole game. Because if it's right that there are puzzles sort of built into the landscape, I have not been looking for those AT ALL." 11:12 "I don't know what I'm doing! Stupid game!" 11:23 "I think I might have to do something else because I think this going to annoy everybody." The only thing keeping Simon from going EVEN faster is his worry that he is being too slow for his audience when he is already blazing through this at a hundred miles an hour. 12:13 Abandons the puzzle. 14:13 "Uh close my eyes to go down the hill… Oh you ROTTEN thing." 14:37 "See… this is odd as well, this lazer beam isn't going where it should go…" It's precisely this "Kid in a Puzzle Candy Store" content that we're all here for. 20:33 Chirp Churp 21:01 Sound puzzles start. This is the beginning of a beautiful love-hate relationship. 21:13 "OK… Ah… Why is that right!? I don't know… why that's right." 21:33 GET'S IT 22:19 "I really hope I'm not going to have to remember notes here…" Oh Simon you'll do so much more than that. 22:43 "I have a horrible feeling about this. This is going to make a mockery of my musical ear, isn't it? … deet deet doot de… Haha! I understand! This is a night.mare.!" 23:44 "This could be a horrific amount of time I spend on this." Simon is both incredibly fast and incredibly inept at these. 24:16 "I put on my robe and my wizards guitar" This is now a guitar stream. 25:11 Let the sound trolling begin. 25:22 "There's a phone going off. … That's not…" *looks around for a phone* 26:01 "COME. ON. Can you all hear that!?" (still immediately gets what he has to listen for) 26:38 "uuhhhaaaEEEEuuuuuh Is that it!?" So fun once again! Word of advice - if you do consider playing Antichamber I would recommend briefly watching some gameplay video first - not enough to spoil things considerably but enough to see if it'd be a good fit motion-wise. I have a feeling if The Witness is an issue motion-sickness wise Antichamber might be much worse.
@mattm5672
@mattm5672 2 года назад
I just came here to say the same. Antichamber is a brilliant game but there is a lot of motion. It also has a bit of a different appeal in that it's more of a cerebral game where The Witness fits perfectly with Simon's analytical puzzle solving skills (not to mention working on a grid). This series has been an absolute pleasure to watch so far!
@peterpeladon
@peterpeladon 2 года назад
I like antichamber but it has a lot more trial and error in it. I would rather he play games like Baba is You, Stephen's Sausage Roll, maybe A Monster's Expedition, Understand, the Talos Principle, the Portal games, or the Myst games. I've seen all these recommended in other videos and I think I'd recommend them all over Antichamber, as much as Antichamber is a fun one too.

For me, the main game I'd suggest they play (either of them - I want to see Mark get in on the streaming game as well) is Baba Is You. I wouldn't be opposed to them branching out of just pencil puzzle style stuff (though Baba... Is more Sokoban which while related to pencil puzzle logic is distinct from something you could do with pencil puzzles), and would definitely be interested to see them do such. Can't think of any games that really feel like they need the same sort of thinking as cryptic crosswords do, sadly, though. Portal feels right out considering he's particularly struggling with vertical motion due to motion sickness - anything with lots of vertical motion feels like a bad idea for Simon, and Portal has a lot of vertical motion. After all, vertical motion is the main way you build up momentum. "Wheeeeeeeeeee."

Really hoping Mark discovers all the Easter eggs and finds his way successfully through the gauntlet. It's really bizarre how wildly different that people's musical ears can be from each other. I was able to do the jungle near instantly after hearing each chirp tunes once, and I didn't have any issue distinguishing the overlapping tunes. I was confused why such an easy section was in the game, and I only later learned how many people struggle with tone deaf-ness.
@hugobouma
@hugobouma 2 года назад
Literal, diagnosable tone-deafness (amusia) is much rarer than most people think, and is often confused for a simple lack of ear training which does indeed affect a majority of the population.

Anything past the first 2 was hell for me. I can tell which of two notes is the higher, but when you introduce a third they need to be suuuuuper far from each other on the scale for me to consistently tell what's what.
@KeithGrant

I am by no means tone deaf, but when it started overlapping sounds, I got VERY frustrated trying figure out *which* sounds were relevant and which were just noise. That was my least favorite section of the game
@jdogg5639
@jdogg5639 2 года назад
@@KeithGrant Once you identify the overlapping tunes individually, it just becomes a logic puzzle. I.E. the grid has 4 notes but one tune has 5 so it can't be that one. Or the grid has a double length sustained note but one tune jumps pitches on each note so it can't be that one. Or the grid has 1 low pitch dot but one tune has 2 low pitches so it can't be that one. Etc. I like the twist with the final one where both tunes work with the dots available, but one path is logically impossible so it can't be that tune.

One thing that isn't a spoiler that I'd like Simon to do more often, because he has done it some times but forgets it's almost always possible, is you can do almost all puzzles from far away, weird angles, through things, etc. A lot of the time Simon will end up writing down or memorizing something that he learns at one angle so he can do it on the puzzle when he could have just done the puzzle from the angle/through glass/etc that he learned the solution at.
@AdamGaffney96
@AdamGaffney96 Год назад
1:30:00 I also really struggled with this one in particular, and I think the reason is because you're always looking at how you complete the "positive space" i.e. where the shapes go. However it's actually way harder to visualise drawing the "negative space" i.e. where the shapes are not. So you're instinctively trying to draw the shapes and not realising that you can't do it that way.
@ChaosTheSalamander

it's interesting how i came from a musical family, and I could pick up the note changes pretty much instantly, while Simon was really having trouble with the birds. then again, his puzzle solving figured out the actual pattern faster than I did. it was also quite fun to listen to this birds: *"high low high low middle~"* Simon: "d-dee doo dee doo deh??"

@jasonx7803
@jasonx7803 2 года назад
He seems to think that puzzles are just physical objects, the border is the puzzle, not the line. He did the same thing underwater, it didn't even occur to him that the color mattered, he just saw a circle and that was it. I wonder if it's vision or his monitor settings, though. If he has a low contrast monitor he might not actually be seeing the glares from the sun as much of anything.
