One thing to note as you go forward, since I know you're always anxious about spending too long on puzzles when you're streaming - Some of the Baba Is You levels are going to take as long as difficult Sudoku, and that's ok. While there's no visible progress like there is with pencil marks in a sudoku, instead the game relying on more aha moments, each time you try something and learn more about the interactions of the rules you're making a tiny bit of mental progress towards finding the solution (and you're going amazingly fast on some of these puzzles) Some of the puzzles might take you an hour to solve, just like sometimes a Sudoku takes you an hour to solve, and that's fine - Most people find a lot more of the puzzles take them an hour to solve than you are doing.

Please, please don't be afraid to go back and understand WHY certain solutions worked. Watching you work out how the rules work is just as much fun as working out how to get to the end of a puzzle. I can't speak for the entire stream, but I can say that personally it's frustrating for me to hear you say 'wait, how did that work?' and press on without actually learning the lesson the level is trying to teach you. From a video game design perspective, every level is meant not only to be a challenge but also to teach you a new technique.

They really need to make sure both of them understand the rules. This game is gonna get very hard if you don't understand things you are already supposed to understand before starting a level. (to be fair, the game is gonna get very hard anyway)

It is maddening how often they don't understand rules, express uncertainty about how the rules work and then ... make 0 effort to *test* how the rules work and gain new information. I just don't understand how anyone can play a puzzle game and not want to know what the rules for it are. It's also furstrating (and also part of the game's design, so it's understandable) how often they make assumptions based on the real world that are *not* rules in the game and then never test to see if those rules are actually true. I feel like they still haven't internalised the concept that *nothing* in this game has any rules associated with it that are not created by the text in the level (apart from text objects being "push" implicitly)

RU-vid took note that I watched the BABA is YOU and recommended "A software engineer plays BABA is YOU." Being a software engineer myself I noted a big difference between how he (or I) approach these puzzles and how CTC hosts do. The sudoku folk sit and stare and think. They only try what reason tells them. The puzzles are not the problem to be solved, though. The puzzle is what the words after the IS actually modify when applied to different subjects which can only be discovered by experiment.

Regarding Simon always making sure the "defeat" works properly: Never change, Simon, never change. (Both because it's endearing and because the attitude is a good strategy) EDIT: Lol at chat (Ray Lawler) going "Blowing up BABA is therapeutic"

20:00 when you broke the box, it spawned in another box and a key simultaneously, putting a box and a key in the same position at the same time. The box kept breaking over and over again because it was weak and had another object in it (the key). That resulted in there being a whole bunch of keys all being in the same position. Once you pushed the "key," you were actually pushing several keys, explaining why the seemingly 1 key opened 2 doors

The box keeps breaking because it's WEAK and has at least one other object on the same tile. Even when you push the key stack away Baba breaks the box leaving another key behind. You nailed the explanation though.

I wonder if you can break the game by just holding space and spawning new keys continuously until some overflow exception can potentially kick in.

@@viktordoe1636 definitely. The game has to somehow keep track of the objects so it would keep them in memory. Memory is finite so eventually it has to crash.

Fun fact: During development, in an earlier version of the game, the DEFEAT block read DEATH (so it would read "SKULL is DEATH" etc). The developer decided to change early on in development because he felt DEATH was stronger than necessary

I sometimes misread/misremember it as death. I like “death” better because I can picture tiles set to YOU as alive, while PUSHed tiles and tiles set to MOVE are just automatons.

@@shadowxaf Interesting, I like "defeat" better because to me "death" implies it should apply to all game objects universally, while "defeat" implies it should only apply to the thing the player is controlling. To use a non-puzzle game example, Metroid Dread enters a loss state - I am defeated - if Samus Aran dies. When Kraid dies, no one is defeated, since Kraid is just a game object rather than having any agency in the game.

Don't worry about taking too long on your solves. There are a few reasons I wait until the stream is over: I like to know how long a watch I have before me, and have the freedom to pause without falling out of sync with a chat I'd feel compelled to keep up with, and if I get bored or frustrated watching a particularly long solve, I can skip ahead a little.

Thank you for keeping music at a manageable volume, much much better. Don't worry about people saying levels are easy. They're all easy once you know the answer, until then we'll all find different ones easy and tough. Some you took longer than I did, most you did more quickly.

You know how occasionally Simon follows an amazing and gorgeous trail of logic to discover that a cell in box 9 can not be a 2 when all that time there is another 2 almost right above it? There definitely felt like there was a Baba is You version of it here once or twice! I kid, of course, I couldn't do any sort of logic under the gaze of two or three people let alone live in front of thousands (and potentially orders of magnitude more). Watching you two solve these puzzles is a huge treat. Thanks for all your work!

one thing i learn from playing the game and watching others playing it is if you have an idea but you think that there is no way it will work. you have to try it to see whether it works or not. cuz sometimes something that we thought impossible is actually the answer all along

yay, part 3 of "let's see if I have a chance in hell of staying ahead of Simon and Mark" with my head start I squandered :D I'm past 80 now and got the first ending finally (that was a great puzzle!) but a long ways to go...

I think Mark should get the game and replay some levels to 1) help Mark know what the player is or is not allowed to do, and 2) help the duo understand some key words.

As well as to understand how finicky the controls can be at times, how the movement isn't always perfect, and how it can be very easy to lose track of where your tiles are and that you'll often accidentally push them into unrecoverable places on accident, so he can stop getting mad at Simon for movement mistakes, which are a legitimately challenging aspect of the game.

Thank you very much for the series! I'm a long time big fan of Cracking the Cryptic and Baba is You, which makes this the perfect crossover for me :D No pressure in finding the best solution! There are often more than 1 solution for a given level, and there is no such thing as a better or worse solutions. All solutions are great in their own ways, and fans of the game actually love seeing different ones, so please don't feel bad for having "less optimized" solutions! Also please free to take as much time as you need on any Baba level! Baba is You is considered to be an extremely difficult game, and the difficulty of the puzzles really ramps up the further you explore. I genuinely believe that you've already been solving Baba puzzles much faster than the average player, so no worries :)

Really fun video series. Something I'm getting increasingly bemused by is that they've been solving a lot of levels so quickly that they're not internalizing certain rules. Rules that I internalized because I was bashing my head against some of these puzzles for far longer than they have. They definitely have a good handle on the game, but there are some things (like not entirely entirely understanding how the "OPEN" and "SHUT" mechanics work in relation to each other) that are giving them more trouble than is necessary.

Definitely congrats on beating Further Fields, its solution is infamous for being difficult to spot (not to mention slightly tricky to execute) and almost nothing in this game gets used only once. In "Double Moat", the reason why you started double-hopping when you combined You+Move is because the "You" rule applies _before_ the "Move" rule. "Move" causes an object to move in its current facing direction (if possible); objects that are "You" will always turn to face whatever direction you are moving. If you press Space ("wait") then the You+Move object will move only one square instead of two. There's another important setup to learn in a different level called _[spoilers]_ where you need to combine two objects with _[spoilers]_ at the same time so that they _[spoilers]_ -- a trick which gets used so much in the secret endgame levels it's actual insanity.

Love the streams! I agree with Simon's approach to walking in all the defeats, as several times I've come up with a solution that I KNOW won't work, but it is a new thing to do (e.g. getting multiple Baba's to push Keke across grass), but visually seeing it in action and realising that it's close to the correct answer has helped me come up with the actual solution. I think Z and Space were some of the most useful keys in solving puzzles!

I loved the solution you came up with at 28:00 with the ghosts going crazy all over the place! The standard solution is to make the ghosts push the blocks "is" and "push" to make "skull is push". Then you can just push the skulls out of your way.

For the ghost is move puzzle at 25:00, I was not sure when you would get the solution i saw, then you got a completely different and much more hilarious solution, I love this game and you are playing excellently.

It's kind of insane how these guys are so intelligent, and yet they fail at understanding very basic mechanics in this game. Like how they STILL don't understand that DEFEAT only applies to YOU, or that OPEN makes SHUT disappear.

@@istvanmagi473 that is untrue. The game is cleverly designed so that you experiment and understand by trying things. The game also uses very simple concepts, and always introduces them with appropriate objects. When you first encounter open and shut, it's a key and a door respectively, so it's not hard to understand the relationship between the two. If you need to check on the internet to understand the mechanics, well... I don't want to be rude, but that's a you problem. The real challenge doesn't come from understanding the mechanics, but from knowing how to make them work toward your goal.

Around 20:30 I think you were pushing multiple keys which is why they opened more than one door. Also, I think the creation of a key on top of the door was destroying the door again, making another key and another door at each move so you were getting another key every move.

@@shadowxaf I did Flag is Win and Keke is You in a cross formation, with Baba pushing Keke onto the flag just as Keke is you has formed, which I think is similar to what you did.

Brilliant solution on Further Fields! (I'm biased) That was actually how I did it aswell first time! My fix to your final solution though was to instead activate BABA IS MOVE with moving up the BABA word. That way the KEKE avatar was on the left side of the YOU word and it could be pushed into place. The reason it didn't work for you was that KEKE IS PUSH still was active preventing the word from overlapping the KEKE character.

hello from the future! watching Evaporating River made me think about the last time i solved it and how weirdly, deceptively difficult it is. then i went to check the game and found out it's actually been demoted to an extra level since this stream! it is now extra 6

My realization, like what Simon had at 1:09:57, evoked a more emotional experience in me than I've experienced looking at any painting. The level doesn't rely on broadcasting what you should be feeling when you play this puzzle; it's purely the understanding of the mechanic, and the theme that the mechanic is placed into, that makes it beautiful.

I missed this stream and I'm sad! This is my absolute favorite thing happening on this channel, it's such a brutal game and you guys are so brilliant at puzzles! It's ENORMOUSLY fun to see you geniuses struggling where I struggled- and then solving them faster than I did! Soon, you'll be solving things I didn't have the constitution to solve.

Nothing against Mark but watching Simon solve he Witness on his own was so enjoyable. You get to see his thought processes and you get to challenge yourself to do better. Mark is like the VoiceOver accessibility option on TV!

Obra Dinn requires a combination of deduction and observation, so it would be good to have Mark there to back up Simon's scanning. Preferably drunk. It's definitely a drunk sort of game.

Possible future game suggestion: Human Resource Machine. It’s this maddening game where you essentially create little computer programs with very basic commands, and the levels task you with doing things that should be easy like multiplying numbers, but all the math commands they give you is add/subtract. Stuff like that. These Baba videos have been making want to try it again-I get pretty far but always get stuck so I wondered how you guys would fare

1:28:25 I feel like that is the hard way how to do that. The easy way is to make BABA has KEKE and then destroy the right BABA in the water. Then you can move KEKE and later make KEKE IS YOU.

Further Fields, I'm still stuck on that one after spending what feels like forever trying to figure out what you can do there... One of these times it'll just come to me when looking over it again I hope. Will just have to skip over your 25 min of fun, I don't feel so bad getting stuck there now lol. Oh snap, I may have just figured it out finally after staring at it for a min, gotta go try the solution now... 10 min later... ah, just kidding. Another 10-20 min later... Simon's idea at 1:10:40 helped. I tried something similar before but didn't set it up correctly. Solved finally, phew.

COMMENT MIGHT CONTAINT SPOILERS ... BUT I HAVE TO MENTION THIS... You should really try to understand how the components of the rules actually work in order for you to be good at solving the puzzles without endless trial-and-error... if you get a solution but don't get why it's working, spend a little longer on analysing what is happening so that you DO know what happened instead of just moving on. Like what happened with puzzle 6, you said "why are things exploding when I'm not doing anything", well things ARE happening... the box you destroyed produced a box and a key in the same spot, the box is weak, therefor the key destroys the box, which produces another box and key that keeps repeating every time you move. And why did the key open 2 doors? Well, because it were 2 different keys... the key that opened the first door exploded creating another box-key-combo, which turned into a second key as per what happened above. Even though you didn't see it happen, because it all happened in 1 'tick', it's really important to understand what's happening, and not just assume that this "magic" key all of a sudden opened all doors...

You guys should re-watch the puzzle you solved at 20:00 (approximately) to understand what was happening there. There was a lot of "why" happening that would have been explained if you understood the rules better, and then you solved the puzzle and didn't get why the "key was still there" after it opened the door, even though that hadn't happened before... and why the box kept exploding... and ... yeah. Re-watch that puzzle and try to understand every bit of it. It will help a lot.

Regarding the amount of levels. I’ve gathered 199 plumes, I know I haven’t solved 1 puzzle so there are at least 200 puzzles. Guess you guys are around 1/4 to 1/3 of the amount of puzzles.

You've gotten all the levels you've tried thus far. I'd recommend taking a look at the one you unlocked with the flowers at the bottom of the world map- don't try to solve it yet, just *look* at it. It'll be something to come back to later.

Obra Dinn would not be a good game for this channel in my opinion; it's more detective style observation than analytical puzzle solving. I think Braid would be the perfect game to do next; has anyone mentioned it yet? 2d, so no motion sickness. The plot is a bit pretentious which is part of why it's less popular, but the puzzles are wonderfully brilliant (same designer as the Witness) and very hard!

Level 9 doesn’t have KEKE. I assume you mean the 1 dot level, Further Fields. You can’t do that because there is a BABA IS BABA rule, and that overrides any other BABA IS (NOUN) rules.

So I am not frustrated at all when the levels take too long. I'd much rather you take longer on levels you complete quickly to actually understand them! You move onto the next one so quick and you don't have a clue what is going on. These aren't isolated levels you have to learn from the previous levels how the rules work.

Simon & Mark, I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler, but you two seem to still be confused about objects that can move. The direction they will move is the last direction in which they were pushed (not counting their starting position, if never pushed).

I think they are not anymore. Look at 1:18:15. Simon knows just pushing babas down is not enough and keeps maneuvering them. He even sees the middle one is facing left so he have to push them around a little bit more. Even Mark says 'make them face right' so they are fully aware.

This is frustrating to watch. They don't understand the basic rules of the game and people in the chat explaining it to them are wrongfully being called out as giving out hints. There are a lot of things that only apply to the "you" rule like defeat. They just don't get this. Also, whichever item is "you" automatically gets the power to push text, but nothing else does unless "text is push". A lot of the puzzles are built around these automatic rules on "you" and they're clueless to the basic mechanics. edit: I was wrong in that "you" or "move" items can push things. They can. But ANYTHING that moves can push things. Even if that object has zero rules on it. Trees (with no rules at all) can push thing if they are moving (as when they are on a belt that is shifting). Not sure how often pushing trees will come up, but it's an important distinction on how "push" works. The ability to push is conveyed by the simple act of the object being in motion. The ability to being pushed is conveyed by the "push" rule and is implicit with text. Anyways, even without all this, knowing that "you" and "move" can push things and that defeat applies to "you" should be obvious by this point in the game.

For not understanding the basic rules they sure have made a lot of progress and with 0 skipped puzzles at this point, no? Since the game never explicitly explains any of the rules figuring out exactly how everything behaves is part of the puzzle solving process, which is why hints are considered spoilers. Simon figures out the relationship between YOU and DEFEAT at 1:10:30. Also you are incorrect about only YOU objects having the power to push text. Look at the puzzle in that timestamp, there is no TEXT IS PUSH and yet the text is pushed by the non-YOU babas.

@@alienrenders It's been about a year since I played the game so I might be mistaken but I think TEXT IS PUSH is the only "built-in" rule. It isn't some special edge case of YOU and/or things that are MOVE. You can even negate the invisible TEXT IS PUSH exactly how you'd expect it to work if it was an on-screen rule.
