In this short video .I explain what these patterns are, and how they work to eliminate small numbers.
NOTE In an XY wing each cell must have 2 small numbers (bivalue cells)
NOTE The 3 cells in an XY wing must have a 3X3 .e.i. each cell must have 2 out of the 3 small number which make up a 3X3 e.g. 34, 46, 36

Great, but if dollar tree is a dollar store, be careful as some of them are cheap because they may not be very good in particular in telling you the puzzles are easy yet they are not. So much depends on how many tricks an techniques you know. This is so helpful! I feel like most tutorials just show you a simple example, and you started that way to make sure we grasp the concept, and THEN you continued to show us how to find it in a sample puzzle section and what to look for, how to spot it, etc. So helpful, thank you so much!

Not yet! It is a matter of searching and the key is to look for bi value cells with only 2 little numbers and look for 3 cells which make a 3X3. Hello first I want to thank you for all your videos, they are great. I've been trying to master the XY Wing or Y wing. I watched your video and I thought that in the second example the Pivot should of been 89 and the wings 58 & 59 and in the third example the pivot should of been 69 and the wings 49 and 46, so obviously I'm still getting confused. Is there anyway you can explain what factors determine the pivot (because it seems to me that is the starting area to determines how to proceed to solve).

The pivot MUST be able to see both of the wings. In the second example 89 cannot be the pivot because it cannot see 59. Similarly, in the third example 69 cannot be the pivot because it cannot see 46.

The first criterion of an Xwing must be that all the 3 players of its body should have 3 by-valued cells ; of the 2 numbers of the Pivot cell one will go to the 2nd cell and the other will go to the 3rd cell. These two cells will induct a common number. The Pivot cell should be visible to and from these two cells (extremity of the two wings of a bird), but these two cells, other than the pivot cell, should not be visible to each other. Am I right?

There is nothing wrong with the 2 non-pivot cells being visible to each other. But this would rarely happen, because then all three cells would be in the same row, column or block, and you would use a simpler method than this to eliminate other possible numbers in that same row, column or block.

The key is to watch for 3 cells with only 2 small numbers and these make up a 3X3 It takes practice to locatde these but with practice you will improve in identifying the pivot. @Peter Kemp The pivot is not always top left. It can be top right, bottom right or bottom left as well, or even “left middle” or “right middle.” (An example of left middle would be having the pivot in R4C1 and the other two cells in R6C3 and R1C1.) You are trying to find three cells that are connected together by the pivot (in other words both of the secondary cells can see the pivot) under the conditions that each of these three possible cells contains exactly two of three possible numbers, such as 2, 3 and 8 in the example in the tutorial at 4:17.

I am really struggling to work out which pair is the pivot. You use the expression that a pair of numbers can 'see' the other numbers. What defines that it can 'see' the other numbers? At 5 mins on this video you have an example of a pivot where it has big numbers blocking the space between one of its hands, so this is not defining 'to see' the other numbers.

Yes it is possible to say it can "see". the "see' concept is difficult to grasp and I appreciate your confusion. The pivot can be found when each number in the pivot see a similar number in the other 2 cells. usually within a block or within a row or column. I suggest you look at tutorial #79, go to min 37 and watch as I explain the XY wing better. I hope this helps. Hang in there. I am stuck on a puzzle and can’t seem to unstuck it. I tried Sudoku solvers on google but every one of them gave me the direct answer and not the logical reason. Can i send you the sudoku?

At start 4:19 min, your explanation is very confusing because you don't concentrate on the common value in the wings. You better can say: "if the pivot is 2 then the right wing is 8, if the pivot is 3 then the left wing is 8. In both cases the 8 on r1c9 can not contain the 8 because both wings can see cel r1c9."

Sorry to read that. This is an advanced technique and it take practice to spot them. Ron I suggest you master the medium puzzles first as in this tutorial I am assuming you know all that I have covered. Ron you can be successful. Sir I am 13 and from India. U can avoid putting matching pair tutorial or 3x3 because let someone think theirselves. Teaching is not always the right way for developing mind and sudoku is for thinking and fire mind relaxing
