SUFFOCATE 

I originally started with the idea of the economy as an organism, how energy is created by consumption, and released as labour. This became incredibly hard to visually represent so I went with something more tangible. How the exponential consumption and greed of the few has irreversibly poisoned, contorted and restricted all of life. Layers of Reality became the most useful, the manipulation of the physical to advance emotions, there is only so much a camera can observe compared to how much an edited photo can show. Hands are the tools we use to affect the world around us. They project our inner will outwards through the physical manipulation of objects. Writing, painting, hand shakes, violence and revolution. What use is a hammer without a hand to guide it. In this piece I want to show how your hands are restricted, held back, by plastic bags. The backing ambience cracks in a way only technology can produce, how else would we destroy the earth without technology. The plastic bags suffocate. They are thin, they break apart easily, they are mass produced and play a major role in the destruction of the world. The suffocation became the backbone of this piece. Reducing airflow adds to the feeling of being trapped and oppressed, as well as being similar to the change in atmosphere. So I suffocate the hand, the projection of the inner will being repressed by the suffocating nature of mass production. The manipulation of the physical hand to increase the uncanny and unnatural humans we have become. I want the audience to fear what has happened to us, how the greed of the few has trapped us.
