For those looking for a list builder, LaunchBayNext has updated their app to reflect the new building rules.

@@pdizzlemac I am an Android user, so I can only confirm for that platform. As for TTA, their mobile site is honestly really responsive so I just made a shortcut on phone "desktop" so it pretty much functions like an app. I think I heard he was working on one, but cannot 100% confirm as I am not on his Patreon. Last night, a bunch of us sat down at our LGS to discuss this. The consensus was to go with house rules and drop AMG and the existing X-Wing rules. The store owner has already cleared out Armada and won’t be carrying X-Wing from here out. He said, “I suppose they’ll be killing Legion next.”

I really appreciate your dedication to the hobby. I have one thing to say. Even though opinion pieces have been driven to the ground. And in no way am I trying to start a fire storm. I'll admit I see some merits to some of these changes. Like the idea of ROAD and making the game more intuitive for beginners. - I digress. I have been playing X Wing since 2016. I was very open minded to 2.0 coming out. I actually really liked it and ended up converting all of my 1.0 ships to 2.0. And being that I mostly played epic in 1.0 I made use of 90% of all the 5 conversion kits. I would say close to half of my inventory consists of ships from 1.0 that haven't received a 2.0 official release. When AMG came through my biggest worry as an enthusiast for this hobby came true yesterday. I saw a lot of this in the making as I attended the last LVO as my first 2.0 tournament and was last minute told I could only play "black box" I had to change my list to a list I didn't practice and ships I rarely flew which ended as one would assume. I kept my spirits high and sportsman like with all of my opponents there. However I left the competition feeling left out. With AMGs final decisions for the points changes and solidifying their format changes and other rules, I feel like my inventory is irrelevant which is very upsetting after shelling out for the conversion kits. As I've seen many other people counter argue that I can still just play 2.0 rules. I'll press these issues that some of the older players are facing. I'll never be able to play an official 2.0 tournament again after missing out during the pandemic and other life circumstances, I have a strong lack of confidence my older expansions will be compatible for years to come even if I tried to conform to 2.5, I've invested in other 3rd party apps out of my pocket like Launch Bay Next who seemly dropped all support for 2.0, and lastly if I just stay with 2.0 I won't get any more needed points adjustments and future releases will not be available to me since they will be formatted to 2.5 (it's not as simple as multiplying the ship cost by 10). I think it's amazing that AMG wants to make this hobby more palatable for new players. I have a friend who just got into the hobby and I've pressed him to take in 2.5 even though my feelings are completely twisted about it. There's nothing in it for new players to lose. However I'll end my statement by saying a decent sum of the older players feel alienated. And to leave us in the dust after all we've had to endure to enjoy this hobby with 2.0 the pandemic and now 2.5 feels disappointing to say the least.

I’ve been playing since 2013 and I have similar issues with AMG’s handling of the game. The 2.0 conversion for my fleet was not even near complete when the pandemic started and now it all seems for naught. I just cannot justify spending more on this game just to get it in line yet another version.

My buddy and I were in the middle of studying epic, I training someone who was teaching 2 others, and we were about to jump into random player order and the new rules…we can’t ‘tweak’ our ships anymore. All the schtuff we spent time ‘list building’ and discussing and purchasing ‘specifically’ to build up to an Epic game while ALL of us were enjoying, learning the game… ‘I wanted an Iron Maiden shirt, I was 13 I didnt have any money, I said mom can you please buy me the shirt. She says how much? I say, $25. She says hmmmmn a $25 t-shirt huh? How much they paying you to wear it? I said huh? She said to me again, how much is the band paying you to wear this t-shirt? I said nothing. She said that’s what their getting cause I’m not buying you that t-shirt that costs more than a regular t-shirt UNLESS the band is paying you a certain percentage to pay me to buy you that t-shirt. Long story short, she got me the t-shirt that day. 🤗 future Eddie with the ray gun. Point is, WHY did they miss this OR do they have BETTER planned for us in the Future for ‘customizing’ our spacecraft chassis’s, upgrades, weaponry properly, like 2.0 did for us? That’s the question you all will have to ask them, like myself. Put them to task. I get the ‘quick build quick $$$’ scheme, new company wanna make their stock back from initial purchase, KIDS! Simplicity, quick build cards etc etc BUT their chucking good parts of a well thought out game dynamic/mechanic for a money fueled chaos element I do NOT openly care for. Again. If I see plans for an Epic BOOK that lets me do what I did before THIS NONSENSE I’ll stfu, but not before that I assure you. Peace gentle humies (Epic book better let me customize my schtuff right with over a gazillion space AND atmospheric rules/scenarios, card packs, replacement cards etc only way peace be restored grumble grumble)

I feel that this removes flexibility from lists, and I don't know whether this will be a good change or a bad one. It forces people to put upgrades on ships that would normally be taken without upgrades. For me, I liked the flexibility and I feel that this is trying to force players to play certain ways which I don't like.

If I may SHOW you why it’s bad(I was waiting for the wisest if you to ask) It caters to chaos. With 2.0 you could ‘tweak’ a generic ship to your ‘specifics’, which was monumental FOR Xwing 2.0 compared to 1st edition ie;1st Ed ‘box of developement’ was always expanding, ‘chaotic’ even, new ship new problems, new fix, new chaos, FFG COMMAND repeat etc. Apparently, this bad. We are now ‘led’ to make a very ‘limited’ ability to ‘tweak’ our ‘specifics’. Now, as far as a ‘pattern of gameplay detrimental to the overall fun’, not speaking of sportsmanship ere necessarily, speaking about ‘blatant patterns of predictability detrimental to overall gameplay’. I can sympathize THINKING in certain situations this may be true but then there is the counter of it being actually true or as the old obi wan perspective goes…perhaps that’s only from a certain point of view. I think ‘bob the painter’ and his friends missed this… Now, lastly, I see WHY AMG, or the big boss’s, decision for THIS to be a ‘pattern of gameplay for OVERALL fun’ is deceiving, from what I’m predicting. I’m hoping they figure out a better loadout for generic ships, flatly, I don’t care for ‘their’ ascertains on loadouts, my opinion but I’ll assume others feel the same ie; ship, upgrades, weaponry, pts and pt slots. Taking that option away from us was the big problem that they NEED to fix/convince/makavelli into the future NOT just for epic, UNLESS I see a damn book to build our ships from scratch. But I don’t see that. I see AMG chucking something that WE were digging very much in the sense of making our Xwing models come to life. NOW, chaos. Why limit us? I get it, utilize those quick build cards for its ORIGINAL purpose. Quick build! 😂 THAT’s NOT me being able to ‘customize’ to MY specifics. THAT is why we’re miffed at ‘the painter’ and his crew right now. WE feel perhaps with all he knows, perhaps he doesn’t care or missed this. There should have been a way to customize and chopping points to sell a game really ticked us off. Am I right? Doesn’t matter if I am or not, obviously, I’m somewhere on the map closer than not. Good luck space cowboys…

I find this change to be pretty terrible to everyone except players who only fly aces. Ace players have been given a gift since they can now add an extra ship to most of their lists since the average point cost of a game has shot up to roughly 250+. However, that's only if you fly the characters that got these huge buffs. Everyone else either got a small buff or a HUGE nerf. - All generics are now completely useless - Many platforms have lost their intended function - Many pilots who play best light now have to pack on more pointless upgrades - flexibility has gone out the drain since we can't equip the upgrades we want on cheaper pilots - the options for which upgrades are available are just arbitrary (half the Y-Wings don't get proton torps but Sabine in an A-Wing does???) Need I keep going? While it is true that Aces have pretty much had the doors blasted wide open (now Luke can equip upgrades to his heart's content for the cost of 70pts) for them, everyone else has been shafted by AMG here. This decision makes no sense to me. It has made my list building experience so frustrating that I have actually quite enjoying the action of building a list. I have actively gone back to using 2.0. The shift from 1.0 to 2.0 made sense. It addressed issues that needed to be addressed. This transition does not address any issues and has only caused numerous others. 2.0 was a couple steps forward. 2.5 is actively running backwards.

@@ryankoops1455 mid tier pilots got a boost (such as some of those mid tier X-Wing pilots) but their upgrade slots were also changed which actually nerfed some of them too (such as a lot of the A-Wings losing missles). It's a mixed bag for mid tier pilots. Especially since a lot of them had decent reasons to use them before. Now I feel forced to use them even when I don't care about their ability.

Thanks for covering these. I appreciate the calm discussion and presentation. I’m a pretty invested player, having played since the time of Wave 5 of 1.0, and I have at least one of every ship in the game. Epic was and remains my favorite way to play, but I did take part in lots of local tournaments and had a great time. I sadly haven’t played in about 2 years due to the pandemic, but I still try to keep apprised of information. And I have some thoughts… Wow. These changes are… something. I am not a fan of most of them, for many reasons. I’m all for making things more welcoming to new players. But there are some problems with this approach. A big issue is that every Core set currently on store shelves has incorrect rules. An updated version is necessary, but when will it arrive? Three months from now? Six? This isn’t just, “Oh, that functions a little differently now.” This is full-on, “The rules you know have drastically changed.” I’m fine with doing away with point bids. They were annoying and the system they incentivized basically pushed for Ace-Wing and stupid deep bids. While I haven’t played in a while, I remember people doing 14+ point bids for their I-6 pilots. However, I am not a fan of rolling for first player every round after dials are down. I expect it will slow down play, and I feel it takes away from strategy. Heck, I would have preferred just alternating the first player. That way, you could at least plan around it. This is a strategy game, after all. While the squad building changes may very well simplify things for new players, there are some pretty significant issues. Allotting every single ship a certain number of points for upgrades puts you in a position where not using the Loadout Points is the objectively wrong decision. Previously, you had to make a choice between upgrades, ships, pilots, and so on. (Plus, Epic/Huge Ships got ignored… again. So even were I to get back to playing tomorrow, I could not actually use my Huge Ships with clear rules and would instead have to guess.) Furthermore, there are going to be plenty of ships where there is no incentive to take a lower initiative pilot. Looking through the new Ship Points, a perfect example is the T-70 X-Wing. Blue Squad Rookie, Red Squad Expert, and Black Squad Ace are all 5 points. They have mostly the same upgrade bar, with Blue losing out on a Talent. But Black Squad, already the highest Initiative of the lot, has 10 points worth of upgrades versus Blue’s 4 and Red’s 2. Why would you ever choose to take Blue or Red over Black, aside from theme? And if you drop Blue’s squad cost to 4, now that means 5 T-70s, which seems a little much, and they would be equal to every T-65 generic pilot but with more upgrade slots. Low Initiative used to at least have incentive as a cheaper option and blocker, screwing up opponent’s actions, but the Range 0 and new overlapping rules basically remove that option. Speaking of the new overlapping and Range 0 rules, those are quite different. I like the idea of punishing fortressing. But I don’t like the idea of nerfing blockers. If you were able to predict your opponent’s move and shut them down, you should be rewarded. Now, you’re really not, apart from denying your opponent a temporary position. I do like pushing for more scenario-based play. I missed the silly little missions included in the 1.0 boxes. They could be lots of fun! And to be honest, the plain deathmatch could get tiresome. So I’m all for that change. I wish they still included missions/scenarios in the large boxes, but that’s another issue entirely. I get the round limit. I played in a fair number of local tournaments, so I’m more used to a game timer, but I understand the idea. I’m not terribly fond of the idea of flipping a counter to signify it, but I can live with it. Overall, I feel like these are really hefty changes, some good and others not, IMO. I may be proven wrong, but I have some serious concerns with them and the health of the game going forward.

@The_Cranky_Painter
@The_Cranky_Painter 2 года назад
I don't like it. Now that that's out of the way, the thing that's bugging me about this new system is that it really just feels like it's being done for the sake of it. AMG going 'this is our game now, so we have to make our own rules for it'. When 2.0 came out, I was skeptical but could at least see why the changes were being made, and I ended up really enjoying it. This time, I just can't see what they were trying to fix, or why. Their explanation doesn't make sense, because this seems to me that it will make it _harder_ for new players, not easier. And I really have no interest in having to check spreadsheets and documents to play a game while waiting for apps to pop up, assuming they will. I can't imagine that many of the people who made third-party list builders are going to be happy about starting from scratch. This just seems like a solution looking for a problem. I'll still give it a chance, but it's going to be a hard sell.
@dblevins343
@dblevins343 2 года назад
100% agree. I think it's ironic that these changes seem to be made with the idea that they are simplifying things for new players. I think this is going to have the opposite effect because now they can't bring a simplified list such as 5 base X-Wings (which was actually a very usable list).

I certainly wouldn't, since I just joined the game and bought up the conversion sets and box sets and such. I bought the conversion set and the ship myself just recently to play this game like a few days before this was released.

I don't know what AMG is thinking. These changes to list building don't make sense. The logic for what ships cost what and what upgrades they can take is absurd. They have literally caused all generics to be useless. They have also taken away basic upgrades for ships that need them. Currently only 3 Y-Wings for the Rebels can take torpedoes and yet we can somehow fit a proton torpedo on Sabine in an A-Wing. We can also take a crew slot on Ezra in a Tie Fighter, but we can't take missiles on half of the A-Wings. None of these changes make sense. If they wanted to change the game by adding scenarios that's fine. That's something the community would have probably been willing to try. Instead, they did that plus they changed the entirely of list building clearly without any knowledge of how list building works in this game. It's either that or they are purposely changing the foundations of X-Wing because they want to take the game a completely different direction. Why? List building is a shell compared to what it was previously. Not only that, but they also found a way to make it more complicated in my opinion. I no longer know what upgrades I can take before clicking on a pilot since the upgrade slots literally change for every pilot and not by the platform. AMG needs to calm down, they are way to eager to change the game when they haven't even done anything in it yet. I have to believe they don't realize how big of a mistake this is because the only other explanation is that they just don't like X-Wing and what to change it into another game. If the latter is the case I will refuse to play 2.5 and will find a way to convert everything to 2.0 because that system (even with its flaws) its way better than this.

An excuse to change game mechanics because they felt like it. This is bad middle management BS. "Before, when the game had no scenario play, it was very difficult for new players to understand what they were trying to accomplish" "Blow the shit out-of your opponent", has always seemed like a very straight forward goal to me... Not having an official app is only going to confuse and turn off new or casual players. After 2 years of next to no live, face to face, game play - this game would be dead in the water after this maneuver. If it wasn't being kept afloat by the Star Wars IP.

They should've released a "Missions" expansion like they did with Epic Battles, containing numerous scenarios to pick from before a match (not just four, and possibly working in a similar fashion to Armada's objective card mechanic). Definitely not pushing the new rules as base game. I've dived into 2.0 believing the digitalized card costs and ease of balancing will stabilize it for many years, if not make it the final version. I'm NOT keen on buying another box just to be able to play my game. AMG is risking pushing out a good chunk of old playerbase and making it ridiculously complicated for new customers to join it. All because some asshats want to justify their salaries, and there's apparently no one reasonable in management to cut this delusional project short.

If they were going to lock things to quick builds they wouldn't bother having come up with this whole loadout system. They clearly want customization to be part of how ships are built/used. Stripping upgrade costs away from listbuilding costs is just simplifying the math and stripping away the most common newbie build mistakes (taking too many ships without the upgrades they need to succeed, or taking too few ships and overloading them with upgrades they don't get utility from) in order to make it a bit harder to lose in the listbuilding phase.

I’ve only played a few games of x-wing since the 2.0 conversion. Just a time thing more than a protest thing. I’m gonna be open minded. I own every ship and usually 2-3 of each. One thing that I have always wanted to be able to do was to 100% randomize what you played with each game (I’m not a competitive player so I’m not saying do away with list building and optimization). If they go with a heavily vested pre build system that had a points cost for each prebuilt ship/pilot, I could see the randomized squadron play being just what I’ve been looking for. I would like the challenge of being dealt something that may not be as optimized as I’d like but still playing with it. I think the only control you would have would be you would set your faction decks up by points groups so you could essentially choose “how many” ships were in your squad but beyond that, it’s whatever fate deals you in the selected points decks. Maybe not for everyone but I think I would like it. It would help get certain ships to the table more often.

I don't have many problems with the new rules, I think it's made some things less confusing for sure. The new squad building rules make a lot more sense to be than the old ones. I hope they come out new starter set with the new rules to make things easier.

Loadouts could provide opportunity for sideboarding. This could be done in a couple of ways: specify the number of loadouts allowed for a tournament (i.e. 2 would mean each ship could have 2 preconstructed loadouts to choose from each match) or by adding a second loadout value (i.e. 5 becomes 5/12, where you can bring 12 points of upgrades, but only equip 5)

I am mixed on these rulings. On one hand I understand trying to make a game more friendly to new players and simplifying rules to make things less confusing but I think they may be missing the mark here. I think most X-Wing players would agree that the hardest part for a beginner is learning the intricacies of list building. As someone who has played numerous other miniature games before stepping into X-Wing I can easily say that X-Wing is one of the simplest miniature games to learn how to play. I have now taught 20-21 people who have never played miniature games before how to play X-Wing and 17-18 of them enjoyed it quite a bit. Learning the rules takes roughly 30 mins to understand for most beginners before they finally put all the pieces together and are able to start truly enjoying the game. Thus, I don't think the gameplay has been the limiting factor for new players. The hurdle that is the hardest for new players is the complexity of list building. This is why I understand them wanting to take a new approach to list building with an attempt to make it simpler. The list building aspect has scared away a good number of those players whom I taught who did enjoy the gameplay. Even with the quick build system in place it could be overwhelming since that meant they had to rad roughly 2-5 cards for every single pilot (They would usually use YASB 2.0 so that they could instantly read the cards). The idea of creating a good list is daunting task to a new player (and even veteran players sometimes) and it can be intimidating to start trying to learn all of the upgrades, ships, pilots, etc. for any given list. With that said, I still believe this massive hurdle is inevitable for the game to be exciting and evolving. However, having played around with the new squad building system in YASB 2.5 it is clear to me that AMG doesn't know what they are doing here. This new squad building system is not only more confusing to a new player but is it also actively ignorant of what makes X-Wing great. I really hope AMG sees this because they are making this game harder for new players forcing us to use upgrades. What you are doing AMG is forcing the overall point cost of the game to rise. An average game is no longer 200 points. It is now much closer to 250 when looking at the lists I have created. This means new players have to have even more knowledge than before to make a list, so this is not making things easier for them. Not to mention you now have arbitrary boundaries for upgrades for every single pilot. This is much more confusing than before where the limiting factor was only the platform and pilot skill. All of these things make list building more of a headache then they use to be. Gone are the days that a new player could make a simple list with 5 X-Wings and have a competitive list to play against friends. Now they not only need to fly those 5 X-Wings, but they also need to use named characters in them with different abilities and initiatives since named pilots get more access to more upgrades for some reason. This actually doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone take your blue squadron escort (38 pts) plus 4pts of upgrades when they can take Jek (44pts) plus 7pts of upgrades with access to better upgrades? This literally makes no sense. Not only that, newer players won't have this previous knowledge like older players have. We all remember what these pilots are worth but newer players are just stuck with the number 4 for both even though one is clearly better than the other. You have also added an extra unnecessary layer of complexity in blocking certain upgrades from different ships. For instance, if you want to have torpedoes on a Y-Wing you have to fly named pilots. Why? The whole point of Y wings is that they have the ability to be flexible and perform one of 3 roles. Torpedoes, Bombs or Turrets. With a generic pilot we literally can't even run torpedoes or turrets. At the very least this is going to confuse newer players a lot. At the worst you are actually damaging the game by basically forcing everyone who ever uses a Y-Wing to use Dutch because he somehow costs the same as a generic Y-wing and yet gets the option to use proton torps. This is a 15 pt difference. None of these changes make sense. All you are doing is adding a level of unnecessary complexity while also removing our ability to be creative in our lists. I don't know how you managed to do that. This is by far the worst move I've seen made in X-Wing yet. The shift to 2nd edition made sense because the problems in 1st edition were addressed. However, the same can't be said here. This solves 0 problems while also making new ones in the process and completely destroys the balance of the game that has been carefully balanced for the past 3 years. If you want to make a drastic change that helps new players get into the game this is not the route. A better route would be to remove these unnecessary limitations and even open up some of the limitations that FFG set. Change the system to not link a pilot to a specific platform. instead have them be separate and let us put them in the platform of our choice. Sure, certain pilot abilities would be to strong on certain platforms (such as Ghost Hera in an A-Wing) but these few problems could be accounted for by just banning that pilot from that 1 platform. This system makes it easier for newer players (and older) by letting us learn who our favorite pilots are and what are favorite platforms are separate from each other instead of linked. Not only that but it provides us the players with the ability to be even more creative with our lists. The issue isn't that list building is too hard because there is to much to choose from. (That's literally why Quick Builds exist for newer players). It's because there are so many limitations that newer players struggle to learn them. The other hard part is a new player has to learn all of the cards. however, this wide selection of cards is exactly why players love this game so you can't change that. Everything good in life comes at a price and for X-Wing the knowledge comes from reading and playing the game. There's no getting around this. Will this kill the game? No. The game still has an extremely fun core gameplay loop. Will this just the game though? I think this unquestionably does. You have managed to destroy the balance in a drastic way. Generics are garbage now along with certain platforms losing their main purpose for existence for a lot of their pilots (Y-Wings case in point). None of this makes any sense and will hurt that game. They should return back to the 200 pt system and do what I said above if they really want to push a newer version. This is actively hurting the game by forcing it to be more complex and removing entire pilots out of the game. NOTE: You can't even get Dutch Torps... AMG this is bewilderingly bad

I have to agree with your comment about a starting player. Coming from a war gaming background bought the core set played through the scenarios and picked the game up fairly quickly. To me part of the fun of list building is picking pilots upgrades etc and then seeing what I like using and works and doesnt work for my personal play style. I was able to teach my 2 nephews with no experience gaming as well fairly easily.

I'm more of a casual player at least in terms of how much I play. I've got pretty much all the products over the years, just don't get a lot of time to play (or even be able to find people to play) and I've never been to like a tournament or anything. As a casual player, on the surface I like the new points system better. I tend to have decision paralysis with XWing trying to optimize my builds and points in the old system. Like, is it better to put the points of an upgrade on one ship versus another or even if I should dump points into upgrades for aces or using my points for more ships. With this new system, it does limit decision making a bit it seems. I can now just pick a handful of ships I find interesting, then load them out without the upgrades from one affecting another. I can see how to a more veteran player that this could be limiting their options and ability to fine tune their lists, but as a casual, I find this to have the potential to be better for that player base. What I don't like is all the errata. It's not that I don't like the erratas being done, it's just that I hate print and play, so I hope that after they "debug" some of these rules/changes and things appear solid they release some kind of kit or core set that has cards for all the errata'd pilots. AMG even has their own storefront, so I'd be into paying them 5 or 10 bucks on their website to get a pack of cards to replace the deprecated versions now. It's one thing to have to look online for a ban list, that is common with tabletop games, but having to look online to see how the paragraph of text on a card changed is annoying. Also not a huge fan of scenarios. I have no problem with a game that is just dogfights in space. The scenarios don't seem all that inspired anyways so I don't find them interesting. I get why long time players are upset. If I were a long-time player I'd probably be more upset with the changes, but from the perspective of a casual player, I think some of the changes are good. Still need to test the waters to see for sure. If anything, I think I can maybe introduce a few friends to this now. Aside from teaching people all the rules, it was hard to get new players to build lists. I know there are app builders out there, but again, the decision making was so open ended that they struggled with things, so usually I'd try to make a list for them when I was introducing the game. Now, since building is more streamlined into like phases, I feel like I can get a new player to be more invested in the list building starting out as it possibly has less decision making involved.

To offer a fresh-eyes perspective: New building as a two-tiered system seems like it gains exponential benefit the more you play. If I find 20 different load outs over time that I really enjoy for my favourite 6-point ship when performing different roles, I can have them all saved and ready as simple 6-point additions to any future list. No more pissing around with 1 or 2 point upgrade swaps to make it fit. More importantly, I'll never have to do a feel-bad drop of some upgrade that makes, say the Falcon, feel thematically correct to me. I'll always be playing the ship I love from the movies, and always built best suited to my game, and it'll always fit into a list as simple as counting to 6. I just looked at this game again a month ago for the first time since first addition. Building the same lists under 2.5 was so much easier than it was with 2.0 for somebody that didn't have 2.0 points committed to memory, and building the same lists never felt like I had to sacrifice thematically. Also, if scenario play keeps people from getting slightly ahead and then playing tag to run out the clock, I'm glad this game is moving away from awarding un-fun grind techniques. I'm really glad i wasn't entrenched in 2.0, because now I can enjoy easier building, as well as action-packed and varied gameplay, without feeling all get-off-my-lawn about the changes. My only worry is that the local game store people get all crusty and negative about something new. Thank you so much for putting out all this content to make it easier for someone like me to get back into this game. Now, let's keep the message positive so I'll have a good happy community to return to ;)

The problem isn't simplifying the lists. The problem is that they have actively destroyed over half the possibilities that existed before while only making some ships actively better now. Personally, I'm not against having objectives but the list building has changed the game entirely from what it was before into something it has never been. It doesn't make sense for them to come in and immediately change the game when they haven't even seen what the game is like yet. That's why we are frustrated.

This is a sneaky way to push people to use more upgrades. I like the concept of pushing upgrade cards and it will definitely make for new unique ships all over the place. However, I have two complaints and I'm quite upset about both unfortunately: 1) The unnamed pilots are meaningless. Why would you take the any generic ship when the named ships are strictly better? The same goes for half the named ships where some are so clearly outclassed by another pilot of the same ship. 2) Now you will need more upgrade cards (and duplicates of them) than ever before. Perhaps it's not a big deal with print-and-play but I'm still worried people will feel that they'll need 2x+ of each new release just to get multiples of an upgrade card or two. I think that moving to 20 point lists was a clear mistake as in reality almost all ships fall in the 3-7 point range and that means there simply isn't enough room to make more than 1-2 pilots playable for each ship. I understand that some pilots stand out, but before you could at least justify playing half of the pilots for most ships. Now you simply can't. If they instead made 100 points the target, we'd be able to maintain more differentiation and allow for the generic ships to be somewhat playable.
@dblevins343
@dblevins343 2 года назад
I agree, the push for more upgrades is a neat idea. With that said like you I have some major issues with this system. 1) upgrade slots are not consistent for ships. One pilot might have nothing while another might be able to equip missiles while another might be able to equip torps. (A-Wings are my example here) 2) lots of pilots have lost access to upgrades that have been staples for them over the course of 2.0 for varies different reasons 3) swarm lists are pretty much dead since cheaper pilots haven't had the same boost as more expensive pilots. If I make a list of 5 X-Wings with named pilots in most of them, I don't have much of a boost from 2.0 compared to ace lists. Swarm lists have gained roughly 20+ points on average (in my experience building the lists) while Ace lists have gained roughly 50-60+ points. 4) All the ships getting banned is insane. not to mention having Hera outright banned from the Ghost, Why? I could keep going but I won't. This really is a mind-boggling decision to me. I am failing to see how this is a smart move. The step from 1.0 to 2.0 made sense to me. This 2.5 version seems like it is actively running in the wrong direction. I don't think AMG understand X-Wing. If they do understand it than I'm afraid they just don't like it and are trying to drastically change it because they want to and not because they think it's the right thing to do.

My biggest complaint is the ban and errata lists. AMG states they want a streamlined experience for new players, yet having printed cards either be banned entirely or changed is not streamlining anything, especially for new players. Just price the questionable cards appropriately so they aren't played, then they are essentially banned with only one document not by maintaining three separate rules documents. Case in point, Luke Skywalker gunner upgrade.

I'm pretty okay with these changes honestly. This does feel like a 2.5 because, generally speaking, how I move my ships w/ the manuever tools, how the cards work and how Boost/Barrel Roll work is still the same, and my cards stick around (replacements not withstanding) so good chunks remain rather than throwing out everything like 1.0 to 2.0. I'm okay with this honestly. Having tried the list builders is seems okay enough, let's me focus on pilot abilities first THEN loadouts, not like I was good at list building anyway. I think switching to objective based is less of an issue for me than it would have been pre pandemic. I've been trying to jump into games like 40K, KT, and Legion and all of those are objective based, so it just lets me refocus all my games into objective play at once and worry more about how my list meets and objective v. countering specific strategies.

I’ll never sell my collection as I really enjoy having all of these iconic ships on display having invested heavily in the miniatures and conversion kits and I can always still just play casually by the 2.0 rules. I’m skeptical of the new AMG rules myself and not a fan at all of the print and play stuff but we’ll have to see how it eventually plays out; meanwhile I hope the latest set of legacy rules and points can be permanently saved somewhere and on some of the list building apps so that we can always play X-Wing in the classical way whenever we want.

That is what I am hoping, too, and I can't imagine this ruins the game enough for me to stop playing entirely. That just seems silly. I also enjoy having all of these iconic ships on display and playing out thematic scenarios based on the movies, shows, comics, and video games; hopefully this leads to some quality scenario play. These 3.0 changes are profound compared to those made from 1.0 to 2.0/2.5, and they move in almost the opposite direction for granularity, but if we always have the previous ruleset available and the points costs recorded, we can keep playing the game we are all familiar with. I still have all my 1.0 cardboard for that very reason. My one biggest disappointment is that we will not have "retro" point costs for ships and upgrades that have yet to be released. I also wonder if this is leading towards a reduction in overall cardboard. They might be building up to a release of a proper 3.0 with MCP character cards like mentioned by @Bondsmen IIC's Battletech Channel. I feel like X-Wing having left FFG would always lead to a major change like this, even with 2.0 being so fresh.
@Puzzu
@Puzzu 2 года назад
@@finodea9242 Same here, I kept all my 1.0 stuff as well and the good thing about that version is that at least all the points are directly printed on the cards so no need to refer to any other docs. Of course there were balance issues but at the end of the day if you’re playing casually for fun I don’t think those issues mattered. Yes it’s too bad we won’t get the retro point costs for future releases but then again I feel like I have so many ships across various factions already that there’s plenty of diff squads to try out from the existing collection. The new scenario plays do sound interesting and I did like how they used to include more of those in the packaging inserts of the 1.0 ships so we’ll have to see how that goes. With these changes I think I’m seeing X-Wing as pretty much a complete and closed game with the 2.0 rules and the AMG rules as more of an experimental rule set to dabble in for now.

@@Puzzu 100%. Framing this as an experimental rule set, at least for now, makes it a lot more palatable. It's too bad we didn't get the Mando expansions and card pack on the table before this was announced.

For the guys who only play competitively I understand selling their stuff to leave the game. These changes to list building are just terrible for the game. As for myself, I will probably just keep hoping the people around me keep playing 2.0 because I have had nothing but frustration with these new lists. It actively prevents me from being able to build all of my favorite lists from just 3 months ago. Luckily for me, I have taught most of the people I know so we can just keep playing 2.0. I will have to find a way to convert new releases to 2.0 as they come out.

For me, the biggest complaint/annoyance with the new Standard play is that most of my favorite ships to fly (Khiraxzh and Starviper) won't be legal and with no real idea if they'll ever come back to the game.. Guess I'll focus more on my Separatists in the future, or go all-in on the Gauntlet.

Speaking of the everyone can make range 0 attacks in 2.5... I'm no native English speaker and I am not sure how to understand this sentence from the reference handbook: • Unless it has an ability that allows attacks at range 0, a ship cannot attack a ship at range 0, even if the attack range would be range 1. I'd really appreciate if someone could explain this to me as I understood it in the way that range 0 attacks are not possible for every ship, which seems to be false. Thank you guys. Thank you a lot!

I quit the game when they forced me to switch to 2.0 cause I didn't agree with the way that FFG did it, and I also expected that 2.0 won't be the last version in the near future. While this happens now I find it much different because at least they don't say on top that I spent around 1200$ for the game, I won't be able to play if I don't spend additional 100-200$ for the game, and they have a print and ready solution. It seems that the game went into better hands now, I wish lots of fun to players that still play this game cause I quit for good and don't regret it for a bit.

From what we've seen so far, I think this could be a big boon to getting new people into the hobby. I've recently switched to aeronautica imperialis for my casual games as it's a lot easier to pick up and play, even with the missions. I think I'll stick to 2.0 to scratch my competitive itch, though I'm interested to see how it plays out. I just hope it means we get a few more releases!

So grateful you do this. I dont even know how long it has been since i played X-wing or Armada.....I remember the New Order stuff coming out for X-wing when I last played and the biggest Imperial cruiser was being released for Armada. How many additional releases came after that, I often wonder.

Empire and Rebels are honestly my favorite factions. This surprised me since I love the battles more in the Prequals but here I am. I usually fly Rebels. The only two factions I haven't played are the First Order or Resistance (although I have played against them plenty since they seem to do well in tournaments). Have you found a style of play you enjoy yet?

I follow this channel because I love the armada content. I have always been intrigued by X-Wing the game, but have never and probably never get into the game as it always seems to be changing its base rules. for that, as a potential new player, I will stay away. If they ever start messing with Armada the way they do with X-Wing, those ships will just become show pieces. I don't mind introducing new cards, and new items to the game to keep it fresh. but frequent fundamental changes to the base rule set will keep me away from a game more than anything else. Just my two cents.

AMG marketing sucks for anything not Crisis Protocol unfortunately. They have one of the more coveted IPs (Star Wars) and game systems (X-Wing) but can't even be bothered to dedicate a section of their site to X-Wing, Legion, or Armada. I've decided to hold off on buying their stuff until they finally give a crap and market their products properly.
