Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!
- Dan

In a sunny environment I've learned wearing very light gray to white long sleeved shirts are much much cooler as well as a wide brimmed hat.

Yes, love my Tilley hat that I had for over 20 years, speaking about emotional attachment.

Dan, glad to see someone else likes to wear long pants and shirt year round. I'm terrified of tics too and there are plenty of them here in So Cal.

Red, blue and purple are colors that absorb UV rays. Wehn caught in a summer rain. If the rain is cold, I put on a raincoat with a wool mid layer and I will be dry and clammy. If the rain is warm, I put on a wool shirt and say warm and wet. Two wool shirts will give three times the rain protection as one layer. I gave up on gortex years ago. Ticks seem to prefer light skin better than darker skin.

Great info, need to invest in some trail clothes myself, last backpacking trip i wore blue jeans. That got wet with continued drizzle, made for an uncomfortable trip.

I'm considering switching to a poncho for summer rain protection. It goes over the pack and provides more ventilation. The breathable jacket works better when it's cool outside

3ful gear has a great ultralight poncho option if you carry a pack.

Good information. I too wear a long sleeved shirt, either the same one you use or the Under Armour equivalent, their Tide Chaser model. They both have the antibacterial treatment added to the cloth. I also like a zip off trouser for the same reason, i.e. tick prevention. I like Kuhl's Renegade model. They do require a belt to hold them up. I normally wear a Cabelas nylon belt with a plastic locking buckle. You can't beat Darn Tough socks; I have several pairs like yours as well as one of their lightly padded versions that I prefer for summer months. I have narrow feet so the Altras are not for me. I use either the La Sportiva Bushido, the Merrell MQM (not the GTX model) and am experimenting with the Topo MTN Racer. Topo has expanded their line of shoes quite a bit this year. They have a good looking mid style lightweight boot they are introducing this year in a WP and non-WP version. I'm keeping my eye on those as they might be my best solution for a right ankle that has never been my best physical attribute. I like low drop shoes 6mm or less. Rain gear; I have Columbia's lightweight Outdry jacket from two seasons ago and the Arcteryx Zeta SL rain pants. For the summer and warmer times of the year I think a rain kilt is the best lower half solution. I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.

Re: Columbia PFG pants. Use them as well. Who makes a good “rip-stop” version for rough brush off trail? I keep getting tears in good pants but south lie to minimise hole to see up. I like Danner Filson X Grouse Gore-Tex. a light ankle boot for warm weather, stay dry in mild water trails. Leather & canvas

I absolutely agree with strange sizing with Columbia clothing. In fact I warn everyone to buy locally, try on before buying as sizing is the strangest of any clothing I have ever had. Arm length is either too long or short for torso design size (depending on clothing type). Light weight button up shirts run large for sure and I find the arm to be longer than other brand and I have longer'ish arm too. Columbia fleece long sleeves? Short arms! Soni exchanged to one size larger as they do not have tall size... Well guess what? Same sizing as before buy body section is just wider. Horrible. I absolutely do not recommend buying any Columbia clothing before trying them on in person.

Hi Dan! Thank you for the video, very helpful! One question, what would be your feedback on the columbia shirt in particular, I checked it out and it is made of polyester, and in past I found myself sweating a lot more in polyster shirts vs cotton one, and feel when it is sticking to skin is worse compared to cotton, did you find same when wearing this columbia shirt?
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking Месяц назад
I haven't found myself sweating more in this shirt necessarily. But what I love about it is it dries super quickly, unlike cotton. And one benefit of it being a little oversized is it also promotes good airflow.

About the UPF I once heard that any fabric with less than UPF 50 will loose the protection when you wash it (a little bit with each wash) ¿does this apply to the columbia shirts?
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking 2 года назад
This type of clothing gets it's UPF abilities from the tighter weave of the fabric (some UPF clothing is a chemical application, but this isn't as common). So technically any wear and tear, including washing, will reduce it's UV blocking abilities in the long run, but as long as you take care of it the shirts should last a good amount of time.

Columbia always has a terribly oversized fit. Always! Which is why I choose other brands
@Markver1
@Markver1 3 года назад
So UPF 40 blocks 97.5% of UV. That means UPF 50 blocks 98% of UV. I hope they are only up-charging .5% of the shirt price for that YUUUGE increase in performance.

You don’t have to stick your nose in dirty underwear to smell a scent after hiking for so long
