Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!
- Dan

New bumper sticker, "Friends don't let friends scoop the poop". I like that! I can't wait for my SWD frameless 40 to arrive. I am perhaps a pound or two heavier than you, so I have the Blackbird XLC. I love my hammock, it rocks. But for long hikes I just picked up the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. I want to test it and see how it works out. I enjoy the tips for loading your bag. When my bag arrives I will no doubt be coming back to this video. Thanks.

Glad it was helpful! I have a SMD Gatewood Cape with Serenity Net Tent, which has very similar angles as the lunar solo. It's a great tent. I'm sure you'll love it!

Until you spring for another dry bag for your jacket, grab a turkey roaster bag. I’ve kept one at the top of my pack in case it starts to rain and I need to keep extras dry. Great video!

Nice pack, I just got my new Zpacks Nero in the mail yesterday. I can't wait to try it out. That pack looks great. I just found your channel and i can't wait to see more videos from you.

I have a quilt that's very similar to yours. I took out the cross-stitching to get a little more loft and made a foot box with a couple snap fasteners and a rubberband. Nice video.

This is a great video! Ill be interested to see this channel progress. I get Darwinonthetrail vibes from you. Something he has incorporated is a cool signature look, good camera work, beautiful B-roll shots, etc. Do your own thing for sure, but he would be a good reference.

That's a big compliment to be compared to Darwin! I hope to be at least half as cool as him one day (and at least half his number of subscribers 😁) Thanks for the kind words!

Perfect timing on this video, thanks so much! I have been trying to figure out whether or not 30L SWD would be too small for me and your kit is very similar to mine at least dimensionally. I use a ridgerunner and a thunderfly so not quite as low of a BW. I'm right around 12lbs with a chair. I will probably ask Brandon to make me a 30L with full suspension just to be safe when I have a heavier winter load. I can always use it frameless in the summer if I want to. Again thank you so much it can be so hard to find the info you need to make a decision and your videos have been amazing.

Glad it was helpful! I was going through the same dilemma when I bought mine, and I'm glad it worked out.

Picardin lotion works well. Thought about the individual water tablets versus bottles? If a back up, extra time may be worth the weight trade. Good vid.

Good to know! I use the drops in the winter too so I didn't feel like also buying the tablets. But that's a great lightweight backup option

Have you considered a pack liner? You wouldn’t need extra dry bags. Nice setup. I’m 6’1 so I opted for the Blackbird XLC and it’s been great. I’ve had it for years.

I'm not a fan of pack liners. No real reason, just my personal preference to use separate stuff sacks. Sounds like a lot of people are happy with their XLC!

Dan Goes Hiking yeah pack liners can suck sometimes.

I've never used picardin spray, but the lotion works great for me. I think you'll find it works for you as well.

Nice. Whats the max COMFORT weight for the pack? I had an MLD Burn and above 15-18 lbs was pretty uncomfortable on the shoulders
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking 4 года назад
SWD claims 18-20 lbs, which sounds about right. Although I used a different pack once (with no hip belt) for a 4-day trip and my shoulders were killing me. I think it all depends on a person's body type. I'll also say that my shoulders have gotten used to the weight so they don't get nearly as sore anymore.
