This looked like so much fun! haha... glad you enjoyed the early 20's party boat :P I live in Germany, but my heritage is Eritrean and the only times I can wear my traditional clothes are at Eritrean weddings. But that is a very rare occasion to be honest. I love the fact that you can wear yours at so many events. Although when you live in the country of origin, I am sure there are naturally more occasions for you to wear them :) Either way, great video as usual!

My mother who did not speak a word of Japanese used to dance with the maids and they all wore kimonos. They sang Japanese songs and raised hell in the afternoon before my father came home. The maids wrote to my mother for many years after she left Japan and lived in London. They wrote in English using a local translator. I think they loved her.

In Vietnam, Áo dài (a traditional dress) is worn by young girls in high school (as an uniform) and elders in special events, such as wedding ceremony, Tet holiday, important meetings... When you see Áo dài in white color, that's only for high school students. And the ones in colorful color and full of patterns, they are for elders. Even though these days, if you come to big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, there are not much students wearing it due to hot weather and its inconvenience (especially in raining season, that white color gets dirty real quick. And the back panels always like to stuck in bicycle's wheels, if you go to schools by bikes). But in small cities like Danang, where I am living, you will see A LOT because we want to keep maintaining our tradition under any weather condition. To be honest, I would be happy if my school allow us to wear Áo Dài only on Monday. The raining season in our city is no joke. Yet here I am. Graduated for 5 years and they still be the same.
@japanagos
@japanagos 9 лет назад
+Milly Lam Thank you for sharing so much about your culture! One of my best friends is Vietnamese so I'll have to as her about the Áo dài! It's a shame that bigger cities become to modernized and lose a lot of the tradition :( In any country, it's always fun to get out of the metropolis and visit the more rural areas where you can experience more of the traditional culture :)

@Lugen101
@Lugen101 9 лет назад
+Yamato Shibasaki I don't speak japanese so I used google to try to find a definition for "charai". So if I have the correct definition it is apparently a slang (informal) word meaning sexually accessible, playboy, or superficial. So you might mean "wild"? For example, "This party is wild", as in, people are really enjoying themselves at the party.
@japanagos
@japanagos 9 лет назад
+Lugen101 I think he means that the event seems like it's got a lot of picking up of girls and hooking up, so charai would be right lol

I think it's cool that you don't/can't drink, Chica (something which is true of 25% of all Japanese and Chinese people, apparently). Too bad that people feel socially pressured to say things like they 'feel like a kid' when only drinking soft-drinks rather than alcohol, because--let's face it--refraining from drinking booze is the healthier choice (not that I'm an advocate of absolute temperance: I simply believe that it's smart not to drink heavily on a regular basis). So, please, Chica: keep on being you and having your fun booze-free without giving it a second thought! :)

@kataru19
@kataru19 9 лет назад
Question, Are there opportunities to buy traditional, authentic Japanese clothing for men? If there is one thing i want when i visit, its some clothing. To answer your question though, here in the united states, there really isnt many opportunities to wear traditional clothing from our "Homelands" unless it is a holiday, Germans have Oktoberfest, Cino De Mayo for Mexicans, St Patrick's day for Irish. Though some americans , depending where you live, dress a certain way. Though not truly "traditional". We have the image of the Cowboy, which i think is most icon to people outside of the US. May i ask your snapchat?
@japanagos
@japanagos 9 лет назад
+kataru19 I know in the states we don't really have anything like this. I just think it's so cool that we don't have to have a certain celebration or day to wear it, we can just go on a party cruise with your yukata lol my snapchat is chika_snap :)
@kataru19

Yeah, that is the funny thing about the US. You dont get a chance to show off your history unless its a holiday. Otherwise you get looks. Though i am german, not Japanese. Japan calls to me as if it is home.
