They are so fun! If you haven’t listened to Rob Lowe’s Stories I Only Tell My Friends, I highly recommend it. He does amazing an amazing impersonation of Cary Grant!
Such a varied list! Loved The Summer Book & the Mrs Tim books. I find Woolf intimidating, too, but have gotten on with her non-fiction. A graphic novel I enjoyed was They Called Us Enemy by George Takei. Takei played Mr Sulu on Star Trek and this is his memoir of his family's time in a Japanese internment camp in the U.S. when he was a young child. Very moving and a fairly quick read.
I have been wanting to read They Called Us Enemy and you are the second person to mention it in the past couple of days. I need to check it out from my library!
I am so so grateful to have discovered your channel. You are a delight to listen to and I am inspired by your reading life. Thank you for introducing me to The Red Notebook. It has become one of my new favorites. Your channel means so much to us!
Hi Jen I’m fairly new to your channel but I’m really enjoying your content. As a woman in her 40s I’m not interested in the YA fantasy a lot of booktubers talk about. It’s refreshing to see some different books being recommended, thank you! 😊
@kate80… I completely agree! I am just beyond 40s and I have a difficult time finding booktubers who read closer to what I typically read. Jen is definitely a breath of fresh air and has filled a void for those who are reading beyond YA Fantasy.
For a graphic novel/manga, I recommend Spy Family. I don't read a lot in this category but I love this series. I have also heard good things about the middle grade graphic novel The Secret Garden on 81st Street. And you have a treat coming with the Mrs. Pollifax books! I look forward to hearing about all of your reads.
I will check out Spy Family, thank you! I read that Secret Garden graphic novel and loved it! And I’m reading the second Mrs. Pollifax right now and loving it…I may binge them all this summer! 😁
Hi Jenn, so many of the books you mentioned sound good and new to me. But one oldie that I would like to reread is about a vacation to Greece and is The Moonspinners , a mystery by Mary Stewart. There was a movie made of it too starring Hayley Mills. Suspense and light romance are a good light summer read. Thank you.😊
I love and have read all of Mary Stewart’s books! The Moonspinners is wonderful and I’ve seen the movie too which is different from the book but very fun! If you haven’t read any other of Stewart’s books, I recommend them all!
So many great choices! I LOVE the Chadwick series (and Theo is one of my favorite literary characters). Jennifer Grey's memoir on audio was one of my favorites the year I read it. Looking forward to Part 2!!
That last book must have been the basis of a 40s movie I watched a year or two ago called "Above Suspicion", starring Joan Crawford and, I believe, Fred MacMurray. That was basically the plot for that film and I did enjoy it. Now that I know there is a book, I'm intrigued to check it out. Overall, you chose a lot of books that I'm now adding to my always growing "mental TBR".
A few good choices for Graphic Novel and Manga are Witch Hat Atelier and They Called Us Enemy by George Takei (about Japanese internment camps during World War 2)
I don't know about Virginia Woolf being intimidating but your list very much is :) I love Swallows & Amazons (I almost chose that for one of my cozy choices). And of course I love Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm but I've been wanting to read the sequel. Also, I strongly disliked The Sun Alos Rises when I read it in Key West this past February. And you know I want to Buddy Read Marcia Willet!!
Hi Jen!! I'm new to your channel...I think I discovered you a month or 2 ago...and I am LOVING your videos!! We are a bit of "book twins"! My Brilliant Friend is on my 24 in 24 book list! Greece and Italy are also on my bucket list too!! I love the idea of this challenge! Thank you for sharing all of this! I do have a strange question that I have been meaning to ask you...not related to this video... behind you on your bookshelf is the book The Eighth Life. I have heard great things about that book, but only from a few people. Have you read it and if so, what did you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks again for such great content! Can't wait for video #2 in the Summer Bingo series!
I’m so glad you found my channel! Thank you for watching and commenting. ❤️ In answer to your question, I haven’t read The Eighth Life…I want to but it’s size is so intimidating. I may need to challenge myself to start it later this year. Maybe I’ll set up a group read if anyone is interested. 😊
For the Graphic Novels category, I was going to suggest “Anne of Green Gables: a Graphic Novel” by Brenna Thummler but I think you’ve already read that. I’m not planning on participating in Summer Book Bingo but I’ll enjoy watching your summer reading content.
I come across them from lots of different sources...Instagram, here on Booktube, reading blogs, podcasts, some I stumbled upon in bookstores, some were recommended by friends and family. I'm just always looking out for book recommendations and happy to pass along the ones that I love!
Ohhh...forgot to mention in my other comment...The Windsor Knot has such a great and fun and interesting premise...I loved Queen Elizabeth! However, IMHO, it is not executed very well at all. Parts were confusing...lots of characters...it was all over the place. I even switched to the audio thinking that would help...it didn't. I finished it but it's not one I recommend. My opinion only of course...lots of people really like it. Happy Reading!
I have actually heard similar reviews of The Windsor Knot so you are not alone! I think I’ll give it a try and if I’m it liking it, I will pass it along! 😊
I have read books by Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf. I prefer Hemingway. The stream-of-consciousness style in Mrs. Dalloway is interesting but more as a technique than a story. It doesn't really thrill me as a story.
