Lover of books, a cuppa tea, and all things cozy. Join me in my 50th year as I discuss and celebrate my favorite books and authors and find new ones to love. Mysteries, classics, British women's literature, cozy reads and more.
Some great choices and a great variety of genres! I remember my older sister had a copy of The Peterkin Papers when we were kids. Have never read it! Have fun! 😊
Say hello to Kate Howe; hope she is well and reading what she loves. I miss her videos, but I understand Real Life comes first. Middlemarch is one of my all-time favorites, especially on re-reading.
I've read a few recent Christie collections including Midsommer Mysteries. They're not her best stories, but it is interesting to see what else she wrote.
Have a great vacation. I am reading My Brother Michael by Mary Stewart, The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie and I hope to get The House at Riverton by Kate Morton.
I am also reading The Shell Seekers. For August trying to finish off some more squares on my summer book bingo with Death of a Hussy, Southern Spirits, Hula Homicide, and The Kensington Kidnap (all cozy mysteries).
☺️ Kids DO go back to school after Labor Day in Boston. I have a granddaughter there. Lol. I'm not a summer person, so am always glad when Fall arrives...even winter. What state do you live in?
I’m in California. And I have friends and family in other states that start this early as well. I’m glad to know that some places still go back after Labor Day! It still feels like the middle of summer here when school starts and that is just wrong!
She is just taking a break from RU-vid for her health but she is well otherwise! Hopefully she will be able to start making videos again at some point. 😊
Hi Jen! I am looking forward to reading a Marcia Willett book. I'm not sure which one yet. I found four of her books recently at my local used book store, and she is a new author in my TBR. 😊
Ready for Shell Seekers, kicking myself because I did own The Peterkin Papers but when we moved two years ago it somehow didn’t make the keep pile. 🤪. Love your channel.
Hi Jen, from one of your recommendations I recently bought House On An Irish Hillside. Months and months ago, I found a book at $Tree called The Trans Atlantic Bookclub. Sounded really good about a bookclub between people in U.S. and Ireland. Imagine my surprise discovering both bks. by same author; Felicity Hayes McCoy! Every so often I find a good, well know book at $Tree.🤔 Also, I was wondering if you ever found the bk. "Over The Sea To Skye" (epistolary I mentioned). If you haven't I can mail it to you when I am finished. Mood reading, Yes!
I'm a little over halfway thorugh Three Men in a Boat (Jerome Jerome) and just finished Deborah Wiles' Countdown MG book, Nancy Drew - I'm thinking I may continue with vintage mysteries but I'm a mood reader so could just as easily pick The Brothers Karamazov back up LOL!
I hope you manage to avoid an Ausgust reading slump! I am looking forward to reading The Trouble With Mrs. Montgomery Hurst, by booktuber Katie Lumsden, and The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson. Mrs. Montgomery Hurst is for fun. The Castle is for the Middle Grade quarterly read of Krista from Books and Jams, and Amanda from On the Middle Shelf. I love Sophie Anderson so that will be fun as well.
I read the Great Gatsby in 10th grade- had a great teacher though I didn't particularly appreciate it at the time LOL! she told us that the characters and actions in the book show the overall attitude in the 20's - right before the depression- parties, uncaring people (the puppy at the beginning.we never hear about it after it's shivering in the house), daisy is shallow and doesn't care that she's married and knows another man is wanting her as well as the other characters messing around wihout a car in the world. I don't think the characters knew themselves nor had any depth to them at all so they couldn't be fleshed out- nothing to flesh.. and the promise of getting to watch robert redford in the movie after finishibg the book was the icin on the cake!
I enjoyed part 2 as much as first - I also like to use a bookmark that suits my book of the moment. Bookmarks are wonderful little souvenirs from travels.
2 books about books I've read after a youtube c hannel recommended are by susan hill. she was a bit hard to take sometimes but overall I learned about books i'd never heard of and I have to say i admire a woman with a strong opinion LOL! howard's end is on the landing and jacob's room is full of books
Hi Jen, you are definitely a reading soul sister. I could have answered all the questions in about the same way! The only re-reads I’ve done are Nancy Drew mysteries during middle grade March. I have way too many unexplored reads to reread much.
I would love to see a Q&A between you and your mom - her favorite books, current reads, reading life, etc. Also - do you have a link to your kindle case? It’s so pretty!
For a Wedding book"Their's Was The Kingdom" has a beautiful old fashioned cover. Never read it, don't know the author. My fave Jane Austen is also Sense And Sensibility. My fictional neighborhood/home would be Orchard House in Concord, Mass. I miss my New England terribly. (I grew up in Lexington). One neighbor would be Robert Frost the other would be Anne Shirley. Shame on YOU, JENN for dog-earring a page instead of using a bookmark!!! I have a collection also..I remember when I had my first REAL job after graduation. I took my Mom and myself to a Hallmark store and bought a really nice bookmark w/ my first paycheck. She thought it so wasteful and told me I could use a ripped piece of newspaper instead! No way, for my books! Sometimes I make my own. This was fun, thanks.🤗
I also match my bookmarks to match the mood of a book or the cover. I would highly recommend Lucy Worsley's Agatha Christie biography. I would be neat to hear how your mom had a love of reading and what's her story of reading books, how did she find her books? And how did she read to you as a child?
