►About the Game -
In every door lies another memory, and every memory unlocks another door.
There's a flash of white, and you suddenly find yourself in an unfamiliar place. A locked door keeps you enclosed in this small, empty room - well, empty all except for the table that sits in the dead center of the floor. Atop that table sits a rotary phone, completely unplugged. The walls and carpet are uncomfortably plain, the camera in the corner not helping with that discomfort. After a few moments, the unbearable silence is finally broken by the ringing of the rotary phone. There's nothing left for you to do but answer the call.
Summerland is a first-person narrative game developed by high school student Conner Rush. You take the role of an ill detective named Matthew as you relive the events of his recent past, all the while being questioned on your moral stances. With themes heavily revolving around ethical philosophy and the afterlife, Summerland is sure to be a unique gameplay experience.
Summerland includes:
- An engrossing and intriguing 1.5 - 2 hour single-player story written by Conner Rush (Welcome to the Dreamscape).
- Beautiful visuals and design.
- A stellar voice cast featuring Ryan Beard, Rhys David, and Natalie Van Sistine.
- A haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Auric Echoes.
Hi! This is Conner. I just wanted to say that this game was very much made as a way to deal with some really intense existential fears of death. This was just sort of my way of coping with those big ideas. Even if those fears or how personal this game is to me isn't very apparent in your playthrough, just know that it's a project that really meant a lot to me and made me feel a bit of comfort. I hope that if you struggle with these same fears, you'll find comfort in it as well.

So let me get this straight. This game is free. It was made by a HIGH SCHOOLER. It has a few very minor spelling errors but no bugs, high production quality, AND a definite moral. Explain to me again why we pay $60USD or more for broken AAA games that feel like they're still in beta testing and will likely never get all their bugs fixed when we have literal children making games of this calibre for free... Honestly, people shouldn't just download this game, they should hit the Fyre Games website and drop some donations. Conner (and his team) deserve our money far more than any AAA company. Here's hoping Chris goes back and plays Into the Unknown and Welcome to the Dreamscape (their first two games).

Can't sympathise guy at all honestly. He got usual, simple problems most of the people have, but we don't go around stealing and killing people, don't we? He could have sold the house, could have rented it - he has so many rooms is crazy, what does he even do with house so big, I bet he spends a lot on cleaning service... And yet he chose the worst actions possible. The picture of "bad guy" in my opinion. The judge seems really unlucky, poor man, he might have deal with psychopaths for so long to be this surprised. The game itself was very pleasant, good graphics, good sound, developer clearly put a lot of work in it.

A little late but what a story that was! Poor Judge-guy. I pity him the most. If he is judging people for so loooong time and he only realised now that sometimes there is a gray matter between actions than I really don't know why still employing him?

I thought the voice acting was well done in this game. Is the narrator the same as the one in The House on the Hill game? They sound similar and if they are two different people, they are both phenomenal. The developer is still young and if he's making games at this caliber, I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll do for the gaming industry in the future.

This game sure comes off as "Baby's intro to Philosophy". I can't believe this is the first time the Judge has seen that sometimes people do bad things for good reasons. I guess he must be dealing with some real bastards if everyone he's judged so far has only killed and stole just for the fun of it... Anyway, The Good Place did it better. :)

He had a child. When the mom passed he should have downsized to economize. If his wife had died family and friends would have been the ones to give that kind of advice. If he had support maybe he would have had someone to confide in about his health condition. The game assumes too much in thinking that he'd be that isolated. Cops know one another too well.

Now that was a pretty good indie game which is also Free! I really enjoyed watching this and I agree with all the choices you made, only one thing I didn't get is that the Judge got a bit too sympathetic for the guy for some reason near the end but over all it was a great game
@alexandrialeonora6542

Agreed! I felt the same way! The main character's actions got less and less morally justifiable, especially when he unnecessarily took the life of another. Yet suddenly The Judge begins to sympathize with him more? That was definitely a bit strange, and I wouldn't say it's a good lesson. Though I did very much enjoy the game!

An interesting take on moral philosophy which is a very subjective field. Personally I don't think Utilitarianism or Kantianism really cover the nuance of choice, cause and effect. The train track example for instance, what if the one person you decided to kill is about to find a cure for cancer and could save millions, and what if the 5 are all murderers if you go with Bentham. On the flip, what if that one person you decided to save was about to go and commit a suicide bombing, would Kant be right then to say sparing that person was objectively 'right'? Context completely changes the outcomes, and the Utilitarian scale to quantify which actions the determine the 'greatest good' or 'happiness' requires so much information to determine the 'correct' choice that it's ineffective. Philosophy rant over, great free game 😂

Spoiler thoughts..... That switch on tone from narrator (in game) make no sense. So this corrupted cop killed a criminal to hide his own crime. That really isn't that big of a twist. From the beginning of the game, it sounded like the narrator (in game) has seen through millions of similar death already. Surely, some would be way more tragic than this story. Yet, the ending imply that narrator thought this guy story is a divine revelation....? Sorry, really don't believe that swift in tone.

@Scriptor13
@Scriptor13 3 года назад
@@demontongue9893 Maybe. I was born in the UK, but I'm no longer up on how the National Health Service works. I assume it still guarantees care for all, which is free at the point of service. And all medications in hospital are free with medications at pharmacies only costing a few pounds. America has no truly socialized medicine and no such guarantee. Only a small portion of the population get medication for free (which isn't truly free), and only as long as they "qualify" and can navigate the bureaucratic maze. Medications here are outrageously expensive, in hospital and out. Often one medication can cost hundreds of dollars each month (or much more) out-of-pocket. Most Americans, rich and poor, have to pay for medication or go without it even when doing so is life-threatening.

Meh. Police officer was a poor choice. Even with budget cuts, the one thing they have is a union and good insurance. Then they make the criminal have power over him when he's got the upper hand? It's escalated from "I need meds" to "I'm shooting this guy"... He wasn't protecting his son of he robbed a criminal because he wouldn't have. His life was already over too. He was caught and was likely going to jail. Why do further damage? A better profession would've been maybe a healthcare worker or something, nicking meds for their illness. Like the hospice patients are dead and instead of flushing the meds, they keep them because doctors don't want to them pain meds to function at their job. They just made it difficult to feel bad for a guy who goes completely off the deep end without trying anything else. Didn't let his coworkers know, his job know, didn't show him selling his possessions for money for meds, etc. Went right to murder. And there's a lack of commentary on how Americans have crap health insurance. Where's the morality comments with that? That the guy was doing poorly to pay for pills that he needed. That's a uniquely American thing amongst Western countries at least.

Not a bad game, I bet this game is taking the SOMA route and giving you these choices but they don't give you a different outcome or an ending and in many cases that is a good thing, when you present players with questions that fall in such a grey area, it is better for the developer to not present what they think is the right answer and just let the player sit there and really think about it.

I loved this playthrough! What a fantastic game - definitely should have cost SOMETHING. I really can't believe it was free! That whole last trial, when you were trying to get out of the house, I literally had to cover my eyes, I was so worried something was gonna happen to the baby. About your choices, I fully agreed with you. It would have been nice to be able to press the "good" button, but I don't think that was the case. And on that note, I don't really agree with The Judge towards the end of the game, that it's "hard to tell" whether or not the main character is good or bad for his actions. I think as soon as the main character chose to kill someone, that was when he crossed a moral line. Obviously none of his other crimes before that were particularly good (stealing money, covering up crime scenes, etc.), but at the very least, he was not directly involved with taking the life of another. Once he did that, his actions - in my opinion - no longer became even remotely justified. Thanks for playing this! It really was a joy to watch!

You're still choosing something. You're choosing to let a lot of people die, so you can claim to be not involved. Really kind of messed up, IMO.

Are there any game devs that know how basements work? I am 58 years old. My parents bought this house n 1967. Take a guess at how many stairs lead down tto the basement. 12 stairs. Not two Unity Asset Flip flights of stairs. 12 eight inch stairs. I honestly believe that there has never been one single game dev that actually lived - or even been inside - an actual house. I'm sitting in my basement watching RU-vid and YUP. 12 stairs. I can see my kithchen from down here. Its just 12 stairs up. The point is this: If a game dev has no idea what they are talking about, they probably should not make a game. Other points: 1) Fuses. I live in a first world country. What is a fuse? They only exist in historical buildings. 2) Flashlights. I have an LED flashlight. Cost me $4 in 2015. It still shines like the sun. 3) Keys. Every key to everyone's property are on one single key ring. I do not have keys scattered across my house.My interior doors are not even locked. Shit, even if they were locked I could probably kick them dow with little effort. I AM SO TIRED of lazy ass horror game tropes. Love you, Chris. But I don't understand why you are so patient. Maybe Russia and Eastern Europe is fulll of random fuseboxes, C Cell flshlights and random keys scattered across the floor. I live in Canada. That's not how shit works here.

I found it interesting comparing notes, so to speak, with your gameplay. lol Glad I wasn't the only one who took an FPS dip in the beginning there though I think I was more distracted than you during the game. I would like to invite you to look at my gameplay, or at least the decision parts because I do agree and disagree with you and you might find my reasoning interesting. I'm sorry for unintentionally making that sound like shilling, it's not meant to be but a genuine invite to compare choices and reasons. So I hope you can forgive me this. All in all, great vid as always. Cheers.

I've been here every night you post for about 6 months. We should all try to share a link to some of the cooler videos. Your formula with the face cam makes it much more immersive. Immersive with a classy English accent voice showing the way

The BEST thing about this game is that it's the FIRST time I've ever seen CLEAN toilet models!

The game was good...but man...super depressing...that poor baby. But I enjoyed the ideology of it all. Really upercut you in the feels. And like the joker said, people are only as good as the world allows them to be. He was a good person until the everything went bad with the cuts and his job and being alone with a baby and behind in bills and his world no longer allowed him to be that person he took an oath to be. Well I'm sad now lol.

True, but a lot of us go through poverty and mental health issues and don't KILL someone in order to help ourselves and our loved ones. Morally, I'd say that is never a justifiable action to take. As others commented, he had a huge house - he could have moved somewhere smaller to be able to afford his bills and medication, start looking for a new job in case he loses his, or even keep the house but rent out some of those extra rooms. His situation was not actually as desperate as the story would suggest - he had options. Though there are definitely people in the same situation but with far less options. I agree though that this game was great, especially for being free! I hope they'll get some donations for it, because overall it was really well done!

this was a nice experience, i'm surprised its free...should have costed something! - as for the writing, i hated the final trial. mathew was a cop for decades,and your telling me he is stupid enough to have his gun in his hand when being chased by cops? that he could just go far away and everything will be fine? they have his picture...they know who he is...no where in the country is safe... but he turned his Brain completely off and decided on an incredibly stupid course of action... thats probably why the judge felt bad for him. because he is actually incapable of thinking. that is why he made bad decisions. on a final note, developer...have you EVER seen a safe you could open with a hammer and a screwdriver? that was so ridiculous it was considered at all. let alone that it would work AND be silent.

I've seen the first trial and the beginning of #2. Is it coming back to #1 where he is the druggie trying to get pills? I like this one a lot, voice acting and ambience is great IMO. The fact that Mr CJU is calm and funny is a great bonus too 👍 I'll play it first and then come back, I really like the pace - it's very relaxing (saying that I probably get jumpscared out of my pants deeper into the game😁)

Interesting and refreshing game. Works quite well with the setup it has and the direction is well paced. Not a good game to comment about perspective but still here's my own for a grain of wisdom or idiocy. No need to read more if not interested. Like the game said good and bad can't be measured as black and white but these are absolutes and the middle ground is the person you are and the decisions that follow. Depending on what you believe judgement awaits and probably forgiveness. In my perspective there is no forgiveness and you have to suffer through all the bad and good because that is your responsibility. I wouldn't forgive those who try to escape rather than confront. Take this comment however you want.
