After failing to summit Everest in 1990 and 1993, Actor Brian Blessed takes another shot at the top in his quest of Summit Fever.
In his sixtieth year, he makes a last attempt to climb Mount Everest for the 3rd time. If he succeeded he would be the oldest climber to have done so but the infamous Everest weather of 1996 proves to be one of the worst climbing seasons, claiming 11 lives in four weeks. The documentary follows his attempts through treacherous weather conditions, as he tries to fulfill his dream of reaching the summit via Mt Everest North side.

Brian needed to drastically change his diet and fitness regime before he realistically attempted the summit. He told the Dr's to go stuff it with their advice. The first sign of madness is repeating the same s scenario and situation, over and over again! Regardless of his delusion, Brian's life energy is amazing!

The reason you didnt reach the summit Brian was not because you didnt have the courage to keep going. You lacked experience in mountaineering but above all a minimum level of physical fitness is required before one can even start talking about mental strength

This documentary is arguably better than Galahad of Everest as it shows Brian actually realising how dangerous the mountain actually is when he hears about the Indian climbers who died and that is ultimately why he doesn't go any further because he is scared something he never admits. I like how he says that In a way I'm glad I didn't go any higher than my hero did and it should remain that way fearing he would suffer the same fate as his idol Mallory

He is an interesting and eccentric character, but this also shows why Everest is a mess today and no longer really a place that real mountaineers go. It is now just a very expensive tourist destination. Real climbers go to the other 8000ers, to Fitzroy, to more challenging 7000ers...they try harder routes in the Alps... but they don't do this.

Amazing he kept coming back! I saw the first one from ‘91….that’s what they say….after the first time, whether you make it or not, you’re hooked!! NEXT SPRING!!!!! WHEEEW!!!! EDIT: not the best shape, but do realize how big he was circa 1988 😳 It was one hell of a motivation for him to get into ‘top shape for a 59yr old’ (circa 2000). He’s built very very powerfully but, he should have attempted in his 30s or 40s, really. But hey! He wanted to see if he could hack it up at altitude!! Honestly, he should have climbed some teeners, Denali, Acon, and Cho Oyu!!! THEN Everest!!

How to get the best of it all? One must conquer, achieve, get to the top; one must know the end to be convinced that one can win the end - to know there's no dream that mustn't be dared. . . Is this the summit, crowning the day? How cool and quiet! We're not exultant; but delighted, joyful; soberly astonished. . . Have we vanquished an enemy? None but ourselves. Have we gained success? That word means nothing here. Have we won a kingdom? No. . . and yes. We have achieved an ultimate satisfaction. . . fulfilled a destiny. . . To struggle and to understand - never this last without the other; such is the law. . .

I had summit fever really bad back 30 years ago. Lucky me had my eye on Poon Hill and was able to summit and descend without any frost bite or altitude sickness. I did take an extra thermos of coffee and a big lump of hash just in case I was forced to stay overnight. Getting in shape for my summit attempt I crossed passes over 5,000 meters 9 times, hiked to Gokoy once, hiked to Everest twice, once from Kathmandu and once from Lukla, Dhaulagiri base camp once in December, Annapurna Base Camp once, up the Kali Gandaki 6 times including 4 times to the top of Thorng La pass and hiked to 3 of the temples of Shiva in the Indian Himalaya getting in shape for Poon Hill. Being prepared was the secret to my successful summit.

I ve read the book by matt dickinson, the camera man. That indian team was on their summit bid the same day as Rob Hall and Scott Fisher died in the storm. The group that was stuck on the south col with Beck Weathers were on the south col at 5.30pm and the storm was already massive. But the indian team on the north side actually kept going to the summit 😮😮. They radioed down they were on (what they thought was the summit) at 6pm, so when the storm was massive. That was absolutely insane of them. They should ve turned back 2 hours ago.
