Please be careful with this device and follow the local regulations for grid tie inverters in your country. This is just a test I'm doing, not a final installation and everything is safe and isolated
Today I'm testing the SUN GTIL2 Inverter with 2kW on my workbench. Before some will leave a comment, I'm not recommending connecting this inverter via a GPO, power outlet or power point. I also know that the inverter can feed-in a small amount of power even the limiter is set correctly. The same can be said about Victron inverters which are far worse than this inverter in this regard. When a load is turned off and the inverter ramps down it can occur, that power will be exported for 1-2s.
We test, how the inverter works and how the power output can be limited, either fixed or automatic. I show how the limiter clamp is working and walk you through all menu options (which are not many).
You can find the SUN Grid Tie inverter with limiting sensor in the 1kW and 2kW version here:

It gives me great pleasure to watch your videos with simple and to-the-point explanations. It would have been wonderful if this inverter had an input from the batteries and could set the automatic switch at a given time from the solar panels to the battery, thus ensuring operation at night or on very cloudy days. Thanks again for this interesting video material.
@billruss6704
@billruss6704 Год назад
You don't need any switch. Just add a charge controller from your solar panels to your batteries and connect the inverter directly to your batteries. This way your solar will charge your batteries and the grid tie will run off batteries day and night or until your batteries get too low. If it does shut down at night due to low batteries it will come back on the next day automatically as soon as your batteries get to your reboot voltage.

The idea of this limiter used in this Grid tied inverter belongs to Rogel Naval a Filipino Engineer based in Manila. He had this made with masspower in China. It's called Grid Tied Inverter with Limiter or as we know it as GTIL. It's first version has an external limiter which is now phased out, what you see here is the version 2 that has an internal limiter. I had both versions and the version 2 with 22v-60v runs on 48v LiFePO4 batteries. Simple to use. Greetings from the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

I used three phase bridge rectifier connected directly to the inverters(since they already have the capacitors to do the smoothing) and for brake i used arduino to check for high voltage and set pwm signal to do the braking on ssr relay connected to the heat brake depended on the high voltage. But so i don't discharge battery i used one diode in bettwen so it actuall brake the turbine and not drain battery. I coul use the controller that came with the turbine but i read that they fail on high winds (which i do have sometimes).
@DanielSan-ch7dr
@DanielSan-ch7dr Год назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia the newer turbine don't need much wind like a 9blade one. It might not be windy on the ground but you put your wind meter or turbine up about 40ft and it's alot stronger then ground level. A turbine works better when the solar weather is poor e.g. wet windy stormy teribble for solar but great for wind, wind blows 24/7 so the decrease in performance can be made up with increased run time.

Great video Andy! It’s a genius device. Simple and seamless. I have not tried it myself (I’m completely off grid), but after seeing this video I started to think it might have a place in an off grid system after all…. My main problem with consumption is the “buffer” of maximum power I need to have. The bigger the inverter, the bigger the idle consumption. So I have a small inverter that I use for the easy loads, and a big, all-in-one that I only turn on when I’m to use microwave, washing machine, air compressor, etc. The difference in idle consumption between the two is around 25w, which doesn’t sound much, but since it’s 24/7, it makes a huge difference. The idle consumption of the device you test seems to be extremely low. So my idea here is that I might go even lower, just using a 300w-something inverter as a waveformer and use this device as a “dynamic buffer”. Do you think it would work?
@lancealderman2755
@lancealderman2755 2 года назад
Have you figured it out? Id like to be able to disconnect from the grid and "trick" an inverter like this somehow (preferably not with a generator) in a shtf situation. It seems you'd want a pure sine wave inverter to feed into it for it to get a clean signal.
@Mr.X3D

If there is such a thing as a small inverter that you can set an output limit on and keep it from overloading then you would be golden but Im not sure if there is such an inverter. Would suck to overload your small inverter and the whole thing go down. It seems like redundancy is the only way to accomplish some things with solar, at least in a grid tied situation. It's unfortunate at the moment...

Glad you are using the Ecoworthy/SUN/GTIL inverters. No need for wire extensions. It is just 2 wires for the current sensor that run 0 to 5V. Just cut and add wire as needed. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the current sensor, I added a 2k trimpot that makes the inverter think I am using less watts than I really am. I don't think the inverter responds fast enough when a load is stopped so it backfeeds a little without tweaking with the trimpot.

This is the best explanation of how these work on RU-vid. Thank You. I have a question: If using batteries (I assume for after sunset) with only a maximum of 1000 Watts of daytime solar, would the inverter be able to recharge the batteries if they ran all night supplying 1000 Watts to the house and still be able to provide power to the house during the day or would it need to be dedicated to just recharging batteries. I am a little confused on that part.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
This inverter does not have a charger. It's not a hybrid inverter. It's grid tied with power support. So it will deliver the energy used by your load as long as possible until the set low voltage cut-off is reached. The grid will then deliver the energy again until the voltage in your battery rises and the SUN takes over again.

If you plan to use more than 1.5kw in a sustain way, better to have a much higher battery voltage to reduce the DC input Amps .
@RJ-cc1fz
@RJ-cc1fz 2 года назад
This is a great suggestion. Limit the amps so that never producing over 1500w and for the 1kw limit the amps so the inverter won’t produce over 750w. I use a 60v nominal lithium battery to power both of my 2kw inverters. Voltage goes up to 64v. This is a good voltage to run the 45-90v inverters if using batteries. 48v battery is really to low to use with the 45-90v inverter. That low of voltage will make the inverter use more amps which isn’t good for it. For the 22-65v version a 48v battery is great

Hi! If I install the limiter sensor, I should also turn on the internal limiter in the menu to make it work properly? Or just leave the internal limiter off in the menu? My electricity provider does allow me to export electricity. I'm ordering one just like that in 1000 watts in either 22-60VDC or 45-90VDC depending on how many 100 watt panels and in what combination of series or parallel connection . Thank you for sharing and posting and these vids are plenty helpful to my project.

You only need the limiter if you want to limit the power been exported or prevent a feed-in altogether. Otherwise both can be turned off.

Some reviews on Amazon about this backfeeding even with the limiters in place. Most utilities now days that have a smart meter will be alerted to this backfeeding. One review he says it was back feeding during a power outage a utility worker noticed power still on the grid after they cut the power going to the feed lines. Here in the US when you grid tie you required to have insurance in case of injury from back feeding to the grid while they are repairing it. Not sure how often that happens. I would imagine it is very rare.

@Off-Grid Garage sorry for the question but I am still learning. 1) is it good practise to plug the AC into a plug socket? I don't want to wire it into my main board as I don't want to touch anything there because I will be moving soon and I want to take the system with me. Is there some way I could maybe wire it to it's own breaker and from there to a plug socket, or is this still dangerous? 2) if I'm running panels to a battery and battery to the inverter then I would have to buy a separate MPPT controller to put on the other side of the battery? There would be no way for it to control it? This is only for panels connected directly? Thank you

So, grid grid-forming inverter will be connected to the grid, to batteries, and in case the grid goes down it will feed the house from the batteries, but the main load will come from solar via grid-tied inverters.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia aha oké it requires you to cut the connection completely, rather then to rely on the automatic control. I see interesting. Well every government makes there own Weerd rules Wenn it comes to solar, we upgraded to a home battery because they start demanding injection charges, or canceled the reverse turning power meter, so essentially I loose all power that is exported if I have a new meter, or pay obscene amounts of injection Charges, I believe it's 100€ per year per kw inverter power. In my case 800€... That buys you allot of power... Some contracts allow you to sell your power at 4ct/kwh so you can buy it back... At 50 or whatever... Seems fair right? BTW, if you are interested in automating or integrating all kinds of rules to your setup, there is a venus OS build that includes Node-Red, a powerful automation tool that allows you to switch all sorts of devices over the network for example, depending on SOC, etc. Very interesting stuff, I'm only just scratching the surface myself.

@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
@@bjornemmy Yep, totally strange and weird rules at some places. I'm getting 54.2c/kWh and pay 21c/kWh when I buy it back. So THAT make sense. Usually it's only 10.2c/kWh though. The rest 44c is been paid until 2028 for me. Then I'm free and have to re-think the setup. Thanks for the automating stuff, that is in deed interesting and very handy. I will certainly look into this. Could be triggering the balancer to be connected if SOC is at a higher level or deviation is too high and leave it off otherwise. Interesting... Thanks.

Hay Andy, I have some information for you... I have two inverters SUN2000gtil in last two years. If You develop your project about this inverter.. you will doing big mistake. I will explain why.. 1. This inverter is declared 2000 W but is not... Today this inverter product only 1200 W depending on environment temperature. I must set limitation of production to 1300 W. If is setting for limitation of production 1800 W ,then inverter is overheated and automatically limit power. On the end go to turn off. 2. One inverter was burned on and not have any option for repair it. I was buy second and on this inverter burned two small fet transistors for controlling fans. In this situation I was repair it. 3. This inverter have price 300 to 400 EUR (depending on the action). Two inverters in total 2500 W cost about 600 to 800 EUR-a. I think.. that is to much. 4. Inverter have very poor interface for monitoring. Addition problem with interface is.. when doin connection and read data, inverter stop working to one to two seconds. Real data is not real... this data is average in 5 minutes. 5. Warranty basically not exist.. 6. If you use battery, must buy two addition MPPT. Ok.. you have chargers but this price must be included in total price. I tings... more better option is buy inverter with all in one... Inverter with two mppt-a, Warranty 5-10 years and good interface to managing and monitoring. For example: Groowatt SPH series or GoodWee residential inverters. Both inverters have option for zero export which is controlled with smart meter or CT clamp. Inverters have connection to battery BMS an can configure point work for battery. SUN2000Gtil is good budget inverter for starting with solar experiences, but is not good for your project. I have plan to replace this inverters with Growatt SPH 3600 for which price is about 1350 EUR. With regards. P.S. Sorry for my English ..

Noe need to be sorry for your English at all. I agree with you not on the basis that I have actual facts, but on the basis Chinese product specs are in my opinion just half the values they advertise.
