I rarely comment, been watching since the start. Just want to say thank you. I lost my mom on May 3. I've been binge watching 👀. "Little Mountain Ranch Therapy," my hubby calls it.
The idea of the sun jam is very interesting, I’ve never heard of it. I can see that the flavors would be more concentrated and intense from the dehydration.
If you've never grown cue ball squash before you will love it! This was my first year with them. They were by far the best producer for me. They are quite a mild flavor, they are great pan fried as well as roasted with a bit of garlic, oil and Parmesan cheese. Oh- they make the absolute moisted zucchini bread ever😎. Many blessings to you as always💞
Back in the sixties, the ladies that worked at the bank with me used to combine all the chicken, potatoes, carrots, onions, and a dry soup mix into a shallow glass dish covered with plastic wrap and put it in the window of our car during the summer while we worked. Supper 'cooked' by itself and was ready when we drove home. Knowing what I do now, I would NEVER do that but I don't know of anyone that got sick doing this (Florida summers) but the risk is too much. Not exactly Sun Jam but I don't think you were weird doing it at all. It is worth trying down here in out 113F heat just now. My unle did fry an egg on the concrete driveway just for fun one time - no one ate it but we were amazed! Thank goodness that today we have slow cookers!
You could cover jam with a one quarter to one half inch of melted paraffin and then cover with a metal lid with screw down ring to make it shelf stable. When you open it, the wax comes off the top of the jam in one solid chunk when prying the wax edge with a table knife. Refrigerate the jam in the jar after removing the wax. My grandma would wash the parrafin wax chunk, rinse well, dry, and remelt it to reuse it again.
I use a brother PT label for sure. I’ve been using one for 15 years at first started.when I had an Icecream shop to lable all kinds of things ..and then when I started gardening.. So I lable the garden plastic steaks and use them over and over and they don’t fade ..and I all my glass jars for my pantry ..like grits.,powder sugar .pickling salt and more ..
I haven't tried honey berries, but they sure sound good. Those Peonies are gorgeous, and must smell amazing, love them. Kittens are so much fun, I absolutely love cats. My cat that I have had since she was very tiny, and so very cute, is 11 yrs old now.
My honeyberries were ripe on the first of June. They were literally were falling off the bush. I need to get more of them. They were a couple of weeks earlier than usual. I had enough to make a batch of jam for the outstanding time I only have 4 plants.
Great video. I have never heard of those kind of berries or sun jam. I know I would love them. My grandmother use to dry apple slices. Then make hand pies with them thro the winter. Miss her so much.
We are just starting to harvest our Zuccini here in Santa Barbara, CA. Our tomatoes have been very small this year due to the overcast days and fog banks at the beach…so wish we could grow berries but they do not do well in our garden😳. When I was a child in Yakima, Washington the various berries were glorious🥰❣️👍🏼❣️
I love watching you daily, you bring so much peace in my life! Your voice is just so soothing to me! I really want to make a live chat real soon and send u picks of my garden 🪴 I am truly jealous of your land and life !!
You make sun jam enough that building a solar oven might be a fun project for you. Also, there are mesh tents on Amazon that are made for covering picnic foods to keep bugs off but will let air flow happen.
Things are looking good. They are just starting to hay here too - letting it cure is so important. I have a stack from last year that was put up damp (they thought it was dry) and has heated - luckily no fire ...yet. Need to separate it so it can hopefully cool down and then figure out what to do with it. Maybe sell it off super cheap...or get some feeders. Good video.
Nasty wasps! Honey looks amazing. Your sun jam almost looks like blackberry. Beautiful color and texture. I imagine those thumb print oat cookies my mom made with a dollop of that in there and a cup of tea! Garden is taking off so good now. Yes it is hot. Today at noon (lower mainland) we reach 31 in the shade. We have a covered area which is so great and a nice kiddie pool for the dog. Oh and my feet. Stay cool!
So we've purchased the honeyberry bushes this year (yesterday actually), so I'm glad for this video although we won't have berries this year, it's good to know that you all enjoy them. Thank you.
I have a friend with Parkinsons disease and he can not have any refined sugars. I made Strawberry Jam using real Maple Syrup as the sweetner. It was so good.
This video was very timely for me, as I just bought a canning book (1980) at the thrift store and there is a recipe in it for sun jam. I was curious! Thanks!
Chelsea you have me convinced I would like to try and make some of your jam. I am not a fan of those berries but I’m going to try and make some of the jam anyways. Do you grow strawberries as I’m curious which you would get first? Love those kittens and thanks for taking us along on your garden tour.
Hola from Mexico! 🇲🇽 Chelsea you are a bright spot in this lads day. Love the idea of sun jam! How do you keep bugs out of it while on table outside without lids on securely? Thanks for sharing your ranch with us. 😊
That honey is so clear and pale. My sister and Dad has two hives years ago. They took pollen from red clover, dark and strong flavor and also from melons in the garden. The melon honey was light and mild flavor. I wonder what pollen your bees visited?
Wow! That honey is very light in color. I ways heard that the taste and color depended on the flowers the bees get pollen from. Is that true? If so, what undertone flavor does your honey have? You are so far north from me that I’m really curious. I know nothing about raising bees and collecting honey.
can you use any berries for the sun jam? we are loaded with straw and blue berries- I froze them - that looks so good - we also have an abundance of honey
I've never had that type of berry before, and I've never heard of that type of jam either. It does look really good. Is there another way to prevent wasps from attacking a bee colony? Cheers! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️🇨🇦
About 6 months ago my sister lost her barn due to uncured bails being moved, and caught on fire. They are still sorting everything out with insurance. Most definitely better to be save than sorry!
We had a puppy that a owl tried to carry off but the puppy was to heavy but it punctured it’s lungs it hid and we didn’t realize until it was too late. So sad
Oh, I can smell those peonies from here in Florida. I was surprised as to how light in color your honey is. Any idea as to what type of flowers the bees collected their pollen from? Also are you going to plant more honeyberries?
HaHa, my honey berries are still like dainty wild blueberries! I have 2 bushes and they were full of berries this year, but very small! They are about 4 years old and I am in zone 4, high elevation in Montana. Do you fertilize?
If you left that out longer to evaporate more moisture out , could you end up with like a fruit leather type thing? If you did that here it would probably only take less than two hours. Its been from 112- 118 over the weekend and will continue through the week.🥵🥵☀️🔥🔥. I live in Las Vegas by the way.
Hey Chelsea! :) I just picked about 3 lbs of haskaps yesterday so your sun jam looks fantastic - any idea of ratio of honey to berries and qty of lemon juice or are you just going by taste? We're going to have 30+ temps here in NE Alberta so the timing here is perfect. Can't wait to try this! Thanks so much
Just add as much honey to get the sweetness you like. The lemon juice adds some pectin so you can add or omit it depending on your preference. You don’t have to worry about ‘safety’ with this once since you’ll be freezing it anyway.😊
Wow thanks I have never seen any jam made that way. Too bad about your bees. I hope you can find some wild bees to replace them. The wasps were nuts here in Edmonton too last year and a friend of mine lost her hives to them. Also the wasps were behaving weirdly and actually attacked me when my son and I were chopping down sunflowers stalks and heads to feed the birds in October. We had to make a run for our garage and I had to smack my hair repeatedly with alot if force to kill them I was stung a lot and had to go to the Dr, who prescribed a cortisol salve for my skull. The bumps lasted right up to June when I got another prescription and that seemed to remove the venom. It was hell for a year. It can't easily dissipate because of the blood brain barrier. I wonder what type of wasps they were? Wish I had saved one. Loved your peonies, too. 🎉
