Please don’t presume all “old “ people are thinking alike . I am 76 (oldish!) I voted to remain in the EU as did most of my women friends of a similar age - I cried when we voted to come out . I live in a so called red wall seat & I am middle class - I even went to a top girls public school . I have always voted Labour because I can see that above all else good public services benefit everyone & cover most things which everyone needs . I desperately want us to be in the EU again I hope in my lifetime but for above all the younger generations which include my grandchildren .

After the war we were taxing the wealthy at 65%, that’s how we managed to pay for everything like the NHS etc (until the mid 60s when everyone wasn’t paying attention). No idea why people keep forgetting about this. Anyway fast forward to today and imagine what we could do if we went back to those levels of taxation but only for 10 years. Or even just 5… 🤔

When the Attlee Government came to power it found that the UK was bankrupt. It was only able to implement policies like setting up the NHS because of a US loan of $3.75 billion - secured for them by Winton Churchill. One thing which inhibited postwar economic performance of the UK compared to continental European countries was the need to pay back this and the various US war loans. The debt was only finally cleared when Tony Blair was PM. Labour chancellor Denis Healey put the top rate of income tax up to 98% (on investment income - it was 83% on earned income) in 1974. He still had to go to the IMF and borrow $3.9 billion.

My husband and I try to get our neighbours over for a get together (barbeque in summer and mulled wine evening in winter). It has made a great difference in our knowing our neighbours better.

If in the 42 Red Wall seats Labour win each by 10% from Reform, Labour will get 42 seats, Reform zilch. Under PR, if no other party won enough voteshare, , Labour would get 23 seats and Reform 19 (If other parties qualified to win seats, the ratio of Lab to Reform seats would still be only 23:19). The oh so friendly FPTP arithmetic is why PR is absent from the Labour mainifesto Don't believe any other justification or excuse they try to give you.

Not sure if anyone noticed - or cared - but just corrected a minor error with those numbers. The seat ratio under PR would actually be 23:19 not 23:17 as previously stated.

I don't think interaction with neighbours is lost in the UK more than it is in France. I think in both places there's an urban/rural divide. If you live somewhere with - let's say - 100K people, it's almost completely individualistic, but as you go down from there you get progressively more communal.

I've talked to elderly working class conservative voters, and after a long friendly chat, prodded why they vote against themselves. And I noticed they then had an Elvis sneer, and a proud smile like they're the "cool kids" living in suburbia. And that was just the women. They think they're "too kool for school" and are in a biker gang and sporting leather Politics has been reduced to sports stadium cheers and boos.

@@snipelite94 Whataboutery is pretty much the definition of voting in a general election. It's about making a choice between candidates. It would be ridiculous to only consider the positives and negatives of voting for Candidate A, but not apply the same test to Candidate B.
