Im very new to de shaving. I just got my 1968 slim adjustable yesterday! It's like brand new. I used a feather blade, I had it set on 3 for first pass and then 1 for last. I was amazed how nice it was! Thanks for the video!

Proraso green set was the first real shaving gear I purchased when starting out. It was available at a CVS pharmacy but this was over 10 years ago. I highly recommend the Muhle R41, it's a very versatile razor. If you only shave once a week it'll easily take it off but if you have to shave often for work and look professional the r41 gets that done easily as well. You can get a 2 pass BBS shave every time. Instead of fearing that razor, newbies should just respect it; and they'll get along fine.

Cremo is another great shave cream that is routinely available in your local grocery store or pharmacy. I love Proraso too!

Hi Ken. I've had a Muhle 41 four or five years and had only used it a few times since it was so aggressive. I was inspired to pull it out last week by your interview with Mantic when you said it was harsh at first but now its one of your favorites. I really like my Merker 34 with the Persona blade from Israel. That was just too much blade for the Muhle, then I remembered I had some of your favorites blades, Gillette Wilkinson Sword. That blade dialed down the aggressiveness to a real fine efficient and enjoyable shave. Thanks for your videos. I learn from you and they're enjoyable. Paul in Ohio

Hi! I count myself at somewhat new to DE shaving. The first months I had terrible razor burns on the neck, but that’s almost gone now. I have a tough grooth, most blades are to dull for me. If I shave every day then I can use any razor, but if I have two days or more then I have to use my perfect combo. A Merkur Dovo 39C Slanted (120grams) a heavy underful razor that I load with a Feather blade. Not so heavy groath a Shark blade will do. More than two days of groath I have to bring in more help - a warm wet towel. Just a ordanary small bathroom towel soked in warm water and rapping it around my neck. And bleeding isn’t a big thing, what you got during this shave I don’t call a bleeding. It stoped before you were done and most bleeds do that. What I use with heavier bleeds the lightest bleeds first. Alun block, Stryptic Pen and last when I have been realy stupid, Proraso blood soothing gel. And that I have only used twice. First time I droped my Merkur and cought it again against my neck, that was a bleeding!!! The second time was while using a shavette loaded with a Feather, that was a REALY CLOSE shave… But small cuts are nothing to worry about today, there are great products that can help. I set my Gilette Slim on six for the first pass and five on the second, just don’t use any pressure. Let the razor do the work and the first pass with the grain. Doing the first pass against the grains will force the blade down into the skin. And Ken, I really like you videos and I like to know what you thing of the Merkur 39C slanted and the Shark blade.

Astra with muhle R41 and proaso is my main shave setup. I love the combo and works great for me.

These videos are so relaxing. Thank you Ken. I am a big Proraso fan - tried the Red and use White a lot. Not tried the Green yet. When I first got into DE I found the Astra's way too 'bitey' and they seemed to thirst for my blood. I was a bit afraid of them. Now I have got into it I am a convert to Astra's. I retract some of my earlier comments about them. They are pretty thin blades and nice and sharp. You get a great and progressive shave with zero irritation. As a novice I used to love Derby's. But now revisiting, Derby blades by comparison feel twice as thick and find pull a bit on the stubble. Tempted by that R41, but might need a few more years experience before I go there. I love the Feather and the Gillet 7 O’clock blades. I do like to try different ones though just to have a variety.

As far as storage goes, I've found that wooden test tube racks work great for holding safety razors.

Astra green is my go to blade. It's very sharp but also smooth. You should try it more often Ken

I'm a big fan of Semogue boar brushes. Badger brushes are just a tad too soft for my liking. I like that scritch when I face lather. To each his own. It's nice to have options. In my experience, the Muhle R41 definitely gets the job done in a single pass. Thanks for sharing another great video, Ken. Cheers!

Great shave, Ken! I'm almost out of Proraso pre-shave cream and tried the Body Shop's Hemp Body Butter. Man-o-man, talk about SLICK! It made with shea butter, cocoa butter, and, of course, hemp oil (plus other stuff, too). It comes in a 6.7 oz tub and will last a long time.

Hi Ken, great shave! I used this combo for a while (R41+Astra Green), however switched to R41+ Voskhod which drastically reduced the cuts.

Great shave Ken. Can't go wrong with Proraso green which is a very nice mentholated soap. I tend to use a little extra water when I lather up. Astra greens are a great blade and I usually get 3 shaves out of a blade. I'm about to try some Vintage blades here pretty soon.

I have an R41 on the way. Should have it in a few days. Looking forward to put a Feather blade in it. The Astra green is a great blade but I don't use it too often because I have way too many blades to choose from. Over 1000 blades total, many in the hundred pack variety.

DE89 with a Feather or a Merkur Slant with a Astra Blue. I have very coarse growth (like cats whiskers) and I use these daily. Nice video Ken.

I have the same mildness issue with the Edwin Jagger 89 even with feather blades so I stick to my '64 Gillettes; Flair tip, Super slim adjustable and the '69 Black Beauty. Love them all and the Proraso Green is my go to. The Astra's are middle of the road to me so I can dial up the adjustable to a higher number with them. My barber gave me some Lord blades that seem to be about the same as the Astra as well. Love the video's Ken!

Proraso is wonderful soap! I haven't tried the Astra blade yet, but did try the Feather. The Feather was no problem what so ever for me! It was actually the most comfortable one I have used yet along with the Perma Sharp. I have very coarse hair and the only blades I can use are the sharpest ones. I definitely want to purchase a Muhle R41.

I'm only up to about 20 razors and 5 brushes but definitely need to find a storage/ display solution. I dont see and end in sight. The wish list is long with this 1.

I bought a 100 pack of Astra green DE blades. They give a good mild shave for me. I really enjoy shaving with them. When i run out of those I'll probably try the Astra blue blades. I don't use pre- shave but might start using it to help shaving two or three days growth. I haven't been to an arcade for nearly two years. Never been to an arcade dedicated convention sounds like so much fun.

Ken, Prorazo is sold primarily in the Shoppers Drug Marts in the shaving area and also on the top shelf. Where the brush you used is from is my ancestral country but I was born in Canada.

Hey Ken if you ever get a chance you should try to do a review on a Parker badger brush. Pure badger or Silvertip, I haven’t been able to find a full review of one on RU-vid. I don’t if you’ve used one in a past video but I figured it’d be something nice to try out👍

Have a carton of the Astra Greens and swear by them but tried out Merkur blade that came with 34-C and got a surprisingly great shave. Looking forward to your pinball footage.

I actually think that Astra greens paired with the r41 is pretty awesome. I rarely ever use my r41 unfortunately because it's just not something I enjoy with my skin type but if I ever need to take down a really long growth beard, that's my first choice.

Hey Ken, how do you take care of your razor ? Do you recommend air dry or drying it yourself ? I’ve seen all different types online that help prevent rusting. I’d like to know how you do it because yours are in great condition. Thanks!

Yeah, Feather may be the sharpest, but it does not work for everyone. Lately I had to change from Astra SP to Derby Extra, overtime the Astra didn't feel right anymore, then I tried Derby, works like a charm with 34C. This is why there was always suggestions to try few blades and see what works for those new to safety razor.

Yes my Proraso Pre/Post came in the mail today along with my OldSpice AfterShave and Festher Hi Stainless Blades! I choose the Sandlewood one since I have the soap already, but I was hesitant to get the sensitive skin or menthol one. 💈😁🤙. Hello ken you was so right that when the wet shave bug bites you are in trouble I have all ready up graded to a new brush. And have my eye on some more. I do have a question I. am thinking upgrading to a better de razor that is not on the Aggressive side

i use my R41 with Voskhods with great results. they are very smooth, but they only last 2-3 shaves on my thick beard. i think the aggressiveness of the R41 is also killing them :) I use Proraso Green and red - i love the smell they let on my brush after... My gf just got me the 34C as a present (i know,right?) and i can't wait to give it a spin.

Thx for the advice on my question of alum before or after witch hazel! What are your thoughts on slant razors? I’m thinking about buying my first slant razor. Out of all the 100 plus razors I own (many are vintage straight razors) I don’t own a single slant.

I used the R41 with the Green Astra. It tames the R41 a bit for me. I have used a Feather blade with the R41, a beast.. Go very slow, zero pressure. But, the results are Baby, baby smooth.

If I use an alum block I use it first and then witch hazel because it is also a cleanser and has good properties in it for the skin.

Nicely done Ken👍. I don't have an R41(used one once)as I'm not into aggressive razors as a matter of personal preference. I did however get an Asylum RX SE a couple years ago, beautifully machined SS razor and insanely aggressive😲. Think R41 on steroids! IMO. I can only use it for like 10 days growth after a wilderness or hunting trip, and then only one pass😉. Anyway, Proraso green is a mainstay in my den, great results every time. Great shave💈 and brave intent, another good video and comments. Enjoy!

I have coarse hair and I haven't had success with Astra blade unfortunately. I also try Persona blades and I always get cut by them and I don't know why, I don't have problems with other blades. Anyways, the Muhle R41 is definitely my go to so far, but have not used Feather blades with it. I found Gillette Silver Blues to pair really well with it for me. Also, me personally, I am not as big of a fan of the vintage look, but I do prefer things to have a more modern appearance.

What do you think about the Gillette 7 O Clock Yellow blades, I think they're amazing.

Hello, I've only tried the Proraso green once , and I found it to have a very strong menthol feeling, perhaps it's just me being too Nash!?........I have started using an Alum block after every shave along with witch hazel. But I have been using these rather intriguing Chinese blades called 'Gilere stainless steel' I think they are a Gillette blade copy but if they are sold by their millions in South Asia they can't be all that bad can they?.....I wonder if anyone else have used these blades?.....

Good shave Ken! Just a couple of thoughts. I recently added the R41 in my shave den and I have tried shaving on a daily basis (6 times a week) both with the Astra and with the Wilkinson blades. Can you explain to me why on earth EVERYONE goes crazy about this razor, saying things like :to be used 2-3 times a wek only", "extremely aggressive", etc.? Yes, there is no doubt that this IS an aggressive razor. Having said that though, one the user respects it and truly applies the no-pressure rule, I honestly cannot see why it should not be used daily. As a matter of fact, I consider my skin to be quite sensitive and having to do less passes with this razor has helped me get less irritation. It is not all that unreasonable if you think about it, right? Anyway, thanks for another great video and I hope you have been having a great week so far!!!

Have you tried the bic blades? I'm just starting out ( I've only been DE shaving for a few months with a Van Der Hagen razor) the first blades I decided to buy other than the Van Der Hagen blades were the bic blades and the German Wilkinson Sword. I've had pretty good luck with the bic blades so far I'd be interested in hearing what you think about them. As for the shelf it looks good. Personally I'd like more joinery but for the price it's pretty good. The weathered finish really works well with it.

Received my R41 yesterday and I’ll say I was kinda fearful based on the razors reputation. I got through it without any bloodshot lol. It is aggressive though.

I don't have a shave den, yet. If I did I would definitely get that storage cabinet. (I bet you could make one of those, Ken.) Until the day arrives when I can have a shave den, I bought some antique pipe racks to display some vintage razors and a craft storage cabinet to store my collection of modern razors and blades. Duller blade = More Drag Sharper Blade = Smoother Shave If you can't use a feather or Polsilver,. "You Need To Tweak Your Routine". That's the entire purpose of the Muhle R41,. "Nothing But Blade",.

The feather blade is too harsh. I like the Astra blade.
