Was there that day, aged 14, with my dad, and two brothers! It was a day I will never forget for the rest of my life! Monty's save was out of this world!!! I still cry with emotion every time I watch the DVD!!!
I was watching this match at my friends house down the road, Porterfield's goal and then Monty's save, both are embedded in my memory for ever. Greatest save ever made, I think it is better than Gordon Bank's again Pele.I still get emotional as well whenever I watch the game. i@@mehcol
I've been a Leeds sympathiser for many years. I think they were conned on a lot of occasions in the Revie era. However, no complaints about this match. Sunderland won fair and square... and it's been said a hundred times, but that double save by Montgomery was extraordinary.
brilliant cup final, sunderand supporters created a magnificent atmosphere, iremember them coming to old trafford the following year when united were in the 2nd division there must have been over 10,000 of them all over the ground, great side.
Loads of respect for Sunderland, I'm a Manchester City fan and season ticket holder since 1976, 1973 FA Cup final great memories, even though we fell victim to Sunderland in the earlier rounds. I saw hundreds of games at Maine Road over the years, but the last home game in 1991 was the most away fans I've ever seen at our wonderful old ground. Sunderland have always had fantastic support, hope you guys can get back to the PL soon. Best fans in the NE by a mile
What a double save! It's there with Banks equally brilliant. The save from Cherry was great but how did he instinctively react so quickly and save that from an open goal. Magic. And to me no final is the same without David Coleman.
Sunderland had won the Cup long before this match, by proving their equal to the mighty Leeds along the way. This was no giant killing act; the best team won and that's it. I watched the whole match. at the time......Bob Stokoe, architect of this great win, was the man!
I got 4/1 on a Sunderland win. Leeds were overconfident in winning Division 1 and eased up at the end of the season. Sunderland kept going as they were after promotion... and were unstoppable.
From ecstasy in 1972 to agony in 1973. I remember both well as a lad. Great days for football those. Sad to think of the great players no longer with us: Bremner, Lorimer, Hunter, Charlton etc etc...
This is best save i have ever seen! This guy deserve a statue! Fa Cup Final was most important to watch then Champion League Final in Portugal. What happen to Fa Cup? I came here because of a interview, Clough x Charlton
In those days there wasn't a huge rift in quality between the old 1st and 2nd divisions. In addition to Sunderland, Southampton and West Ham won the FA cup as 2nd div teams against Div 1 opponents.
That ball Reaney put in to Cherry for the Montgomery save was a bit special too. Also, a very good save from Harvey near the end. Great upload! Sad that some of the players from that final have now passed away including The Don and Bob Stokoe.
I was at Old Trafford that day. I believe that game still holds the record for the highest attendance for any league game played outside the top division. Can't remember exactly the crowd, but I think it was around 61,000.
Well done Sunderland. A victory for football played in a fair way over bungs and bribes and cynical fouls that revies teams were famous for. As Cloughie said "you can through all your medals and caps in the largest skip you can find, as you won them all by cheating"
@@Fexobs look I am not against Leeds I loved Leeds rivalry against Liverpool in the 60s and 70..course they cheated !! Fouling on purpose is cheating !! You can't say they or any body for that matter didn't !!!
@MrLawman10 after that man u n us had a bond becouse regular both would be in london same scarfs we always mistook each other for either remember us n man u scraping as one against chelsea n q p r outside main bus dept around midnight mid 70s we thought you were us n you thought we were you on many occasions ... lots of times in birmingham n london both played away same time .. it was common that we got on both had massive away support in those days i mean massive facts
@FLICKtheMAGS not quite true lad but maybe you're as bad at maths as i am because 43 years ago they won the the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, i know that and i was born and raised in a small town in the midlands of ireland so there you fair is fair and you people from the north-east (i think you#re all called "geordies" are known in this neck of the woods as a hard-working, fair-minded people.
