You will need to use (probably purchase) an E4 star socket to remove the torx (star) head nuts. I got mine a Auto Zone after wasting an hour at Walmart and Lowes.
This helps a lot, thank you so much for breaking it down, I own a Sunfire that's the same year with the exact same thing going on, and so I'm hoping that this is the solution. Again, thank you for posting this video
@@theinternets7516 On my way to pick up the TORX socket set, you think having the Theft System and service light on when auto starting would mean it's the ignition switch or would it be the ignition cylinder?
@@GlassSandwichTV, probably the lock cylinder. That went bad on mine as well about a year after I made this video. Initially I thought it was the switch again because it was an aftermarket Chinese switch so I put another switch in and it didn't fix it. I ended having to have a mechanic put a new lock cylinder in it. It was a big job. They had to take out the steering wheel to do it.
2002 great pontiac sunfire. once you turn off the car and take the key out the clock is still lite up but the battery doesn't die and it still starts every time is that right?
Did your dash lights come on? In my 97 Sunfire when I turn the key all the lights come on but no clicking of any sort or cranking and all the fuses are good. Just want to make sure that is the problem before I order the part.
bubby I had same problem turn key on car would crank over would not start no dash cluster lights gauges dead no fuel pump nose! it was the switch! hope that helped!
2003 Pontiac Sunfire, the tilt system failed causing the up/down tilt to move about freely without locking into place. Any idea on how to fix this? Looked all over the internet could not find anything. Thanks.
i have a 2000 sunfire and the key just won't turn, i've tried much wiggling, etc. using wd40, but nothing is working. is there a way to get it to turn without replacing anything?
This happened to mine as well. I had to have the ignition lock cylinder replaced. That was 10 years ago and it was ~$400 then. I can only assume it would be more now. Best of luck.
I have a tumbler problem the column locks up for awhile I could shake the steering column and it would loose and unlock. I made a key for it hoping that would work so I turned the ignition off completely to try the new key. No dice. it's just the locking mechanism it starts up upon unlocking.
This is one of two problems and there's not a good way to find out without taking it to a mechanic. You either have a bad lock cylinder and it will need to be replaced to the tune of about $400 for parts and labor or you have one of the small mechanical components of the steering column broken. I have had to deal with both of these issues. For the steering column it was actually cheaper to take an old steering column out of a junkyard sunfire/cavalier and do a full swap rather than try to take apart the original and replace the broken piece that is causing it to lock up. Your situation sounds like what I had going on with the steering column. When the lock cylinder went bad it just went. One day it worked and the next day it didn't. When the steering column went bad it would lock up and then break loose and I could start it. That went on for a couple weeks and then it locked up for good and I had to have it towed to the shop. If I were you I'd call around and see who can do it and drive it there before it locks up for good and you have a tow bill on top of the $300 - $400 for the column and labor. Best of luck!
thanks. that coincides with what I was told from another. I'm hoping to see if it'll unlock one more time. to get it to where I need it. i actually waited to get it home before trying the new key I had made. and called around to find a column. So far $60.00 Column + key. thanks a lot for answering. God's Blessing, Dude.
As I recall, I knew the battery was still good because the lights and everything still worked and when I turned the ignition it just did nothing. No noise, no engine trying to turn over, just nothing.
@@theinternets7516 my battery ok but the dash wont light to indicate anything.the radio and air comes on. The ignition turns on but no humming noise to indicate the other parts is getting energy. I checked the spark plugs they seem ok they still have pistons. Last time i had a honda the dash wud come one the car wud turn over but it would only click. Found out it was the plugs but with this sunfire its not so simple watched tons of videos checked the fuses n it seems to be pointing atbthe fuel pump i left the wimdows down i thought some one tampered with it when i was in the house for about 4 hrs..
@@stoplookinent4791, the part is cheap and the job takes maybe an hour. It might be worth just replacing it to see if that fixes it. Don't forget to buy the e-torx socket or you won't be able to get the old on off or the new one on.
