Program notes:
After ten hours of exhausting backpacking (which grew into thirteen after we took a wrong
turn), our group reached the top of a hill. We were dispirited and too tired to speak. As our
group set down our heavy packs, someone looked across the valley we’d been hiking through
and shouted to the rest of the group-there was a glorious, unobstructed view of miles of
mountains and the sun was just beginning to set. We sat in a line for the next hour and watched
the sky turn yellow, then red. The rocks, which we had toiled over for several days, turned a
majestic shade of orange. Before long, a massive shadow consumed the entire valley.
This moment has stuck with me-not only because the sunset was beautiful, but because it
has helped me prepare for my own upcoming sunset. In less than a month, I will graduate high
school and begin a new chapter of my life. I’ve reached the end, and only now, looking back at
everything I’ve covered, can I appreciate the beauty of the people around me. I’m sitting before
the sunset, knowing it will only last an hour more, but I am content to watch the sun as it slowly
sets without worrying about the darkness it will leave behind.
