Thanks for posting, my father used to play with The Commandant’s Own and this brought back so many childhood memories going to the memorial during the summers in the 80s. Great video.
Dedicated in 1954, the Marine Corps War Memorial (or the Iwo Jima Memorial, as it’s often unofficially referred to) honors every Marine who has served since the founding of the Marines in 1775. The design of the memorial was inspired by Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Engraved around the base of the memorial are the names of every principal Marine Corps engagement since its founding. The motto of the Marine Corps - Semper Fidelis (Latin for “always faithful”) - is also engraved in the center of the memorial’s circular base. The flag at the the top of the memorial flies at full or half staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Traditionally, the US Marine Corps at USMC WAR MEMORIAL is the monument to the Iwo Jima World War II combat casualties here Pays tribute to the heroes of United States of such battle.
Sunset Parade at Marine Corps Memorial Every summer the Marine Corps hosts a weekly Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial (also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial). The tradition began in 1956, two years after the dedication of the memorial, and has continued ever since. There is no cost to attend the event, and guests need not make a reservation. As the Sunset Parade is hosted at the Iwo Jima Memorial, there is no seating available. However, guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets as there is ample space in the grass. When: Every Tuesday from 7-8pm beginning at the end of May and concluding in mid August. For a full look at the schedule, visit their website.
