@@tulmir I think it is supposed to be all second age stuff - so it isn't a reboot of the movies. Especially with modern visual effects and New Zealand I think it could be great. I really want to see Numenor irl
Possible plot: Sauron was not initially a servant of Morgoth but a sensitive helisexual bullied by Isildur's orange-looking ancestor into paying for a wall around Gondor. Morgoth encouraged him to fight against heteronormativity.
My brother David is a huge LOTR fan - in high school he learned to read & write elvish and all that, full on. When he was 17 he emigrated from Glasgow to the USA on the day that the fifth Harry Potter book came out. He happened to bump into Billy Boyd at Glasgow International Airport, and the only available paper that he had to hand for an autograph was this book. So his copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has the inscription, "David, I'm not in this one! Billy". True story.
A few episodes ago: “Viggo is a really generous man, he often just gives you stuff for no reason.” This episode: “For my birthday, Viggo gave me a random feather he found on the ground.” 😂😂😂
BILLY! IT WAS YOU! I used to live 450 Tollcross Rd just before maukinfauld and I swore I saw you you one day many years ago! We locked eyes and I stopped in shock but decided it couldn’t be pip on tolly road! Lol. Lots of love from the east end. I’m so chuffed you’ve done so well for yourself.
Imagine if they did a hobbit 5 stack in League... Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Martin Freeman. But I guess that would be a proton on the watermelon scale.
There is no other show I've ever watched/listened to where I have to adjust the volume up and down so much. You guys will basically whisper some times and then full out scream others lol.
These lads are so pleasant to watch, the chemistry is on point. no ego or competition in the conversations. They bounce of each other perfectly. Just a solid friendship.
It’s so wonderful to hear the banter between these 2 old friends. Take a listen and you will never think of a weed whacker or a lawnmower in the same light again.🤣🤣🤣
Question for Richard Taylor: which prop or effect was the most difficult to produce for the LOTR films? How many iterations did it take to get right? What made it difficult to produce, how long did it take to produce, etc.?
LOL love the almost-medical stuff. The gall bladder is in the upper right abdominal quadrant. So close guys. I’m a physician who helps people with pain and injuries. Im a little late on jumping on the friendship onion bandwagon but I’m so glad I have. Billy, if you ever want a second opinion on your trick knee, I’d be honored to come on the show and entertain all of your medical musings!
Love the podcast guys! On my honeymoon my wife and I visited Scotland and I had an Irn Bru with a haggis pie and some brown sauce. Excellent experience! I loved the tastes and beauty of Scotland and really can’t wait to go back. By the way, my wife got me a Cameo as a surprise for my bday with Billy giving an awesome message. Thanks so much man! I hope this podcast continues for years to come. LOTR forever!
Fantastic!!! Yet another highly entertaining and beautiful viewing of The Friendship Onion. Pure and simple in the absolute best way. Thank you Billy and Dom for eating the world and making it a lighter place.
"Straight from the horse's mouth" has the same origins as "don't look a gift horse in the mouth." It comes from the practice of examining horse's teeth to determine their age and health.
Your ocean creature stories remind me of one my Dad has (often) told me. MY Dad grew up in Flordia, and he spent many years fishing and swimming in the Gulf and the swamps. One particular time, he was snorkeling alone in the Gulf and since it had been stormy for a few days before, the water was kind of murky. He had an uneventful swim, until he decided to head back. As he was turning around to swim back to shore, a very large, very dark shadow passed between him and land. He instantly became aware of how vulnerable he was and hauled ass to shore. 🤣 I would've had my brown suit on!
Hi guys! Longtime fan of you both, and the Middle Earth universe. In the episode you asked what listeners/viewers do during your shows; I watch you on my iPad while running on the treadmill. You make the time go by so quickly and each episode is guaranteed to make me laugh! Thank you for putting such a lighthearted show out here for us, it’s a real treat 😊
Here is an idea for the Eat the World segment. There was a candy my dad used to bring home from Switzerland called Eucalyptus and I swear I was the only one who liked it when sharing with family and friends. It has a taste that is quite peculiar when you first try it but it's one that grows on you if you get through it. But you two might also like it since you were such big fans of the Licorice you did in a previous episode. I've never seen it here in the States and I don't know if it's all over Europe, I just know it was in the Migros stores in Switzerland. It came in a green box and was like a gum drop shape and was a hard chewy texture.
What a great episode. Once again the two of you entertained us very well. I had to laugh at your burps, because I hadn't expected that. And that's the great thing about you, you have no inhibitions to do something like this. You keep surprising, so it never gets boring to watch your podcast. Thanks a lot for this. Warm greetings from Germany.
I live in SC but we have Highland Festivals every year, we always get an Irn-Bru and watch the Highland games. It’s such a fun event to attend and it’s great to see all the clans being represented.
I 100% agree with the clotted cream and raspberry jam for scones. I am from Canada and it is harder to find but you can find it. Love the show. I look forward to Tuesdays now.
Hey Dom and Billy I just want to say that your friendship is extremely and genuinely beautiful. LOTR has been a big part of my life and as dreary as this world has been with the pandemic, your podcast has always brightened my day when I go to work or whenever I can watch it and see you both connect and have fun. I will be honest I've never really listened to podcasts at all and you changed that for me. You both bring me so much joy and Billy I do have to say that everytime I hear The Last Goodbye I get the chills. You have such an amazing voice and it is one of my all time favorites. Thank you for all that you do as actors and as great people who bring joy to millions. I hope I get to meet you someday. and if this podcast is still going after we are done with it, I'll have to make sure I send you a picture of the hobbit hole my husband and I will be building in our backyard. Cheers 💗 Stephy
OK now go with me here guys.... Fun fact, ''The Road To El Dorado'' is based off of the collection of ''The Road To.....'' films. Billy and Dom could do a live action version of the dreamworks film OR an animated version of the originals meshed into one films
Hi Dom and Billy, I'm really enjoying watching the show on youtube every week! I'm Scottish and the Irn Bru section had me in stitches 🤣🤣🤣 wish i coulda chimed in on the question of why is Soda called Ginger in Scotland? Firstly i have to correct you Billy 😅 " A bottle of ginger" is a bottle of Irn - Bru and nothing else as far as i know, could it be because it looks like the vivid ginger hair often seen here in 🏴 Juice is the word for soda in general in Scotland or am i wrong there? 😅😅 Love the show guys, All the best!!! I could be wrong though
28:40 when someone says they don't like the Friendship Onion (just kidding, I've never heard anyone say that) Love it as always, thanks so much Billy and Dom!!
I like the mix of banter, food, music, and nostalgia from all your life experiences. And your humor is just right. Don't change the formula brothers. Also, more LOTR guests, from the movie and behind the camera. Carry on you little bastards!
Love the show. In my less than 30 years of life, I have never had a pop BUT you two have convinced me to give Irn-Bru a shot! Now to find someplace in the state of Oklahoma that has it!
Thank you guys so much for this podcast. I'm living in Sydney, Australia and this podcast is the highlight of my week! We are going through tough lockdown restrictions at the moment due to an outbreak of the Delta variant of Covid. So thank you, as i think i would have gone crazy by now without this podcast! Please keep the podcast going and stay safe! - Stephanie
Hello from Glasgow! Really enjoyed the Irn Bru segment, Billy just described my childhood, except the boys wouldn't let me play football 😂. Ice cold glass bottle of Irn Bru (or sometimes called a "gless check" after a few too many drinks the night before, and maybe a McDonald's, fixes you right up! I think "messages" was because they would write a shopping list, or "messages" to themselves for what to buy and then they would go to the shops to but what they needed - or send the kids 😂.
I have met Richard at Comic Con! I remember watching all the behind the scenes for LotR and he was on it. I would love to have a tour of his company. Wouldn't that be cool! Love you guys! You make me smile every show!
Can't wait for Richard Taylor on the show next week!! I'd love to ask him about how different the lotr film's would be if they were made with today's technology and lack of practical effects used, and whether it would be for better or for worse. Btw I'm loving the podcast so far!!
Hey Billy and Dom, I'm and absolute diehard Tolkien fanatic and I'm loving this podcast so much!!! For your funky music segment I would love you to rate the song 'Holy Grail' by the Hunters and Collectors, (it's available on Spotify and I'm sure many other places) My favourite section is from 15 seconds in to 32 seconds, but the whole song is great!!!
So, Dom, I wonder if you know that you can actually buy some waterproof Mod Podge (online if you must), because it will really keep your stickers intact on that water bottle a lot better than cello tape. Love the show. It's the only podcast I follow consistently now.
As a Midwesterner myself - the chances of a "Nope." are quite low. Chances are we'll 110% agree to do whatever by saying "Yeah, no, definitely, I'll think about it." Or something of the sort! People pleasers the lot of us.
Thanks for featuring my question about Dom's water bottle! Ahh, this made my month. Us Michiganders have some good questions, eh? And I'm happy to say that my profile pic is from Scotland on the Isle of Skye so seems quite fitting that Irn-Bru was featured. Drank my first one on that trip! Cheers, love the show! But also, Dom burping was pretty gross.
The ONLY bad thing about this show is being caught up with the episodes. I dont like waiting a week for the next episode there TO GOOD!! Keep up the amazing work boise
Hey guys! Miguel and Amara here. We wanted to let you know how special the FriendshipOnion is to us right now. We are listening to you guys as we hike the Appalachian Trail. A 2200 mile hike of the US east coast. From Georgia to Maine. The podcast has helped us keep pushing forward and we are now only 550 miles away from the end. It feel like you guys are here with us and makes the harder days fly by. Keep up the great work! We will be listening 😄
Love you guys! Nitpicky comment/correction... all the "The Road to..." movies were actually starring Bob Hope & Bing Crosby, not Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis. That said, I think you guys would be amazing remaking some of those old film as a duo!! :)
You two guys are so awesome together! Well, you're awesome as individuals too but I totally dig you together. I have never laugh so hard as I did when I watched the films with the commentary. If anyone has not done that, you need to right now! It's the best. Okay, here is my question and I am a huge need fan of LOTR. Okay, what is the tattoo that the members of the fellowship all got during the filming of that first movie? Thank you for giving myself and everyone else endless hours of fulfilling entertainment. God bless you!
Ha! Was just thinking about usefulness of IRN BRU and making an ice cream float when Billy's face lights up and he remembers it too! Also chuckling at 'the messages' - you don't think about how weird that is until someone not from Scotland looks at you and says wtf?! Great episode!
I only know "chunder" from hearing the song "Down Under" in middle school and then having to go research the word haha - definitely not an American word
Love the podcast, I look forward to watching the new episodes every week! Quick correction: the 'Road' movies were not Martin and Lewis; they were Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
