This is a trip that Greg Miller and Doug Keller made around 10 years ago to Canada. We left Portland, OR. on a rainy morning for Nimpo Lake in British Columbia. This is the highlights of the trip with Greg's narration. It is a departure from the Big Rocks & Long Props video that Greg is known for.
Grab beverage of your choice and sit back and relax while you go on a float plane adventure up North in beautiful country.
I am posting this in response to a few negative posts I have seen. By the way, my channel, my rules. I will remove them when I see them so you might as well not waste your time. What an airplane! That babe gets off like an angel hell bent for the heavens. Those Hail Mary stories were a little unsettling, but entertaining, thanks to they barely made it out from becoming total disasters. Humbling experiences like that are good for our health.

The real frontier is not just Alaska, its the mental expansion that occurs from realizing, you could have done real damage or killed yourself(if not others), but because of small factors of skill and quick wits, called upon at a critical instance...you survived! :) I am still counting on being able to fly the country in a small plane to experience all the wonders, even if it kills me. Somehow there is more dignity in that, than never trying and reflecting being an old man in a home with loaded shorts.

Control freak.....nahhhh ! Great adventures always have some type of adversity to overcome. I'm one of those guys who got a float rating and haven't been in a float plane since, 21 years ago. I need to change that. I did put float fittings on my Bearhawk Patrol fuselage when I built it. Thanks for the video.

Once airborne wheels or floats make little difference, but on the water the work load increases. Remember you have no brakes so docking can be challenging if there is any significant wind. There is a guy at Lake Hood Alaska making a fortune repairing damaged floats and he gets 6 months holiday every year.

I really appreciate your retrospective storytelling. It provides wisdom to future aviators. Living in the Pacific Northwest, people always ask if my plane has floats or if I want to fly floats. It only took one trip with an outfitter friend with a Husky on floats for me to realize that I'm a wheels type of guy. The workload only increases when the floats are in the water! My respect to the float pilots and early pioneers!
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 года назад
I think if you have experience with floats like anything else it becomes just another great resource. We have so little float access where I live, fueling and storage makes it really less than a great tool. If I lived in Alaska I would have floats for sure.

I wish as a teenager I would have found flying! My neighbor growing up was a professional bush pilot in AK and I really regret not taking advantage of the knowledge he had. He liked me and I really think I could have gotten an apprenticeship with him and damn what a world that would have been for me…

Awesome adventure. Thank you for sharing. How many float plane hours do you have now?
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 года назад
Probably only around 30. I put some time on a Turbine Maule, that was fun. I also few a Wilga for a few hours before the engine quit and I had to dead sticked on to the tundra in Alaska a few years back (not so fun). Fuel line fitting to the carb broke and it quit about the time I cleared a 100 foot bank on take off. I could not make it back to water, it was on straight floats.
