Garrett gets a little snarky in response to a Facebook War of Opinions on which is the best snake ever (verses Ball Pythons, Burmese Pythons, Boa Constrictors, Anacondas, or even Papuan Pythons). Here's the top 5 reasons WE think that Super Dwarf Reticulated Pythons are the ULTIMATE snake to keep!
FTF or "Free Tip Friday" segments like this are designed to help you gain knowledge and understanding about how to, why, and what it is like keeping reptiles, and often specifically Superdwarf and Dwarf Reticulated Pythons, which we specialize in. This is an interactive segment, and if you would like us to share our views or information about a topic, let us know in the comment section!

Super dwarf retic is my dream snake after i witnessed a motley golden child. At first I was sad because I in no way think I could handle a snake that can go over 10 or 12 feet but then my friend and I remembered you from our first expo and you give me so much hope! i own different species of snakes. Like balls, boas, berms, corn snakes, and someone left a retic on my door step with a RI and basically skin and bones. After some TLC I fell in love with it. Its smart sometimes I think it knownwho I am. Its a legless puppy. Great video I agree with you.

You might be right. I've been boa obsessed for 10 years and I was thinking through the first few points that boas fit the same criteria, and then you brought them up. They are incredible snakes and I don't understand why the market is so much more difficult than the python game. Maybe because they take a long time to mature and they're a little harder to breed? I'll always keep a few, but I've been thinking about dwarf retics (and balls) more and more. Gotta do it for the love though, for sure. There are a lot of incredible species out there.
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
They actually mature faster than Superdwarves do, and I would say are easier to breed than SD's as well. I think that's just a mature market that has been around forever. Morphs are only exciting if they are different looking than what you are used to. Once you get used to them, they aren't as appealing anymore. If I were to do boas, I would focus on line bred locality stuff, like Surinams, and some of the interesting northern localities as well.
@AuroraExotics
@AuroraExotics 5 лет назад
Reach Out Reptiles Standard for boas is now 4-5 yrs of age to breed (females) - powerfeeding had some breeding at 3 but this is considered unhealthy. At what age are superdwarf retics ready, typically? I do love the Suris and hope to have a pair someday, but for now my focus is on the northern dwarf morphs (leopard, type 2 anery, etc).

@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
LOL... took about 45 minutes to get it off, and each time I did, it would just reattach. If a Retic does this, they soon realize you are not the food they were after. With the Papuan- I'm convince it thought it could take me if it just tried long enough. Had to give it an A+ for effort....

*drive-by comment* Carpet-Pythons-Rule *runs* Honestly though, I only have three snakes, more of a gecko breeder, but my ultimate favorite of the three is my 75 percent Sonoran leopard boa. 1. Leopard boas of a high percentage Sonora are fairly rare. 2. They stay a lot smaller than most BCI boas 3. they're variable even in that one morph 4. they're freaking GORGEOUS. (But also they're not pythons so they don't qualify for the Best Python Award. ;) ) But if you don't have carpets, I think a lot of the things you like about super dwarfs you would like about carpets. They're active, beautiful, have locales, variable combinations etc.
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
I agree- Carpets are amazing, and these are fairly comparable in many ways. I do appreciate the additional activity, hardiness and interactiveness that a Retic has over capers though! And the Dwarf boa crosses are pretty cool as well (but I can't stand breeding live bearers, personally).

@ReachOutReptiles

Kalatoas, Karompas, and Madus are the smallest, followed by Kayuadi. But pure locality is one thing- once you start crossing them into morphs, the locality is only as good as the efforts of the breeder to selectively breed for small size specifically.

True retails offer classic styling on pure locality animals. That is one of the all time best big snakes projects, IMO- but only if you don't short cut it. If you were to set a price tag of $3500-$5K per animal, and then collect about 5-10 animals that were absolutely the best representatives of their kind, and line breed for specific traits, then I think you would become world renown with the help of a great photographer in 10-15 years. They aren't cheap. Pure superdwarfs in the size range you are talking about go for around 1000 these days, but lower percentage SD stuff can be had for cheaper if u aren't afraid of a 10 foot snake. Some carpet pythons get to be around the same size as the smaller retics, and because of the slender build they aren't very hard to work with, they just like to move around alot and go for the ceiling fans haha they're awesome tho.

I love all snakes. But I like my boas more than pythons. Preference really, I have a mainland retic, ball python, 3 boas, a burm, a gray rat and a few lizards. Lol

Matt Hendricks what are gray rat snake like as a pet? Always wanted one after seeing it in the wild lol
@Avalanche2
@Avalanche2 3 года назад
The best Python is a Green Tree Python, hands down. Retics, Burms, Rocks, or any other giant and sub giant snakes are overdone and usually end up dying or being abandoned once they are a few years old.

I agree super dwarfs are great and maybe the best snake in the world, but the most beautiful snake award definitely goes to a southern white lipped python.

I agree with all your points, but I have one reason why super dwarf Reticulated Pythons aren't the best: Snakes over 5 feet long are illegal where I live and I can't have one.

YOU DIDN'T TALK ABOUT YELLOW ANNIES. They are the SD/dwarf of anacondas in my opinion. Want an anaconda but not the size of a green? Get a yellow. They're prettier too.
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
Yeah, they are cool, but I don't like breeding live bearers. ;)
@yona-yama
@yona-yama 5 лет назад
Why not? Don't have the patience? 😋 Really though, why is that? I haven't bred snakes yet, but I've always wanted to breed ATBs. And Dumeril's boas. Which are viviparous/oviviparous.

I want to purchase a baby super dwarf reticulated python from you soon in the near future. I am saving up the money for an enclosure and then I'll save up the money for my super dwarf reticulated python that I want to purchase from reach out Reptiles.

Super Dwarf Retics are wonderful pets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reticulated pythons are the Labrador retrievers of pet snakes! FACTS!

You know I really love the information you put out on your videos dude, but I'm going to have to disagree with your opinion on this. All the positives you name about super dwarfs are negated by the fact that in some states retics are illegal to keep. If I lived in a state that allowed retics I would have at least one mainland and who knows how many super dwarfs. But the negative image mainstream media puts on retics sways the lawmakers and keeps me from even having a super dwarf that would be smaller than my biggest bp. Just because it's a retic. So with what I'm legally allowed to keep I would argue that boas and ball pythons are the best when taking into consideration the silly laws that my state and far too many others have put in to place. I hope one day those laws will be changed.

You don't need that negativity in your life. I say pack up and move, or start a revolution!

Kinda like saying pistols aren't weapons because they aren't cannons, don't ya think? ;)
@bluefrog8670
@bluefrog8670 5 лет назад
@@ReachOutReptiles To stick with the analogy, it's more like saying that the cool thing about cannons is how big they are, so if you want something the size of a pistol then you should probably get a pistol, not a miniature cannon. Actually I think it's pretty cool that dwarf retics exist and it'll be great to see all the morphs become available in more easily manageable sizes, I just couldn't help myself.
