This is the biggest game changer for our sailing RU-vid channel! We add Starlink RV to our sailing catamaran to see how well it performs on a boat while we're off-grid.
We speed test the latest Starlink dishy and install a new custom set up. Now we can work remotely with super fast internet - the ultimate solution for digital nomads.
If you want to see more of our sailing journey, check out the other episodes on our channel as we fix up our sailing catamaran Indioko and explore the Caribbean islands.

@RedSeas
@RedSeas Год назад
It’s been a huge improvement for our working life. We have been able to do live video for patreon catch-ups and things as well as plenty of other zoom calls and things. It does have some dropouts but that is mainly due to our current cruising territory being outside of supported coverage. If we swing a little at anchor it can be an issue too but nothing unmanageable. Our buddies on the falcon just did an episode about it I think.

Love your channel, you are great. As I am right now searching for a liveaboard catamaran I would be exited to have fast Internet on board. But Starlink maritim comes at a price of about 10.000 $ for Hardware and 5.000 $ monthly fee???. and the RV Version of Starlink is not meant to be used on the move. Is the connection stable as your boat moves at the anchor? Keep up the good work. Ralph
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 2 года назад
Absolutely. Starlink Maritime is not designed for cruisers but for the commercial market. I’m sure they will deliver something specifically for the cruising world at some point but right now, the RV package is working well for us. We’re going to continue to test it in different positions on the boat and see how well it performs in different conditions but so far, at anchor, we’ve been amazed. Hardly any drop outs and continual amazing service. So far so good!

Thanks for reviewing this - question how did you run the simple connections? Is it permanently installed or will you store it inside and move it out to the rod holder when you want to connect. I interested in getting it also but just not sure how you did the wire run.
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 2 года назад
At the moment it is just temporarily installed on the rod holder so we put it up when we want to use it (every morning so far!) but we intend to install it more permanently up by the hardtop so that we’re not tripping over the cable running through the cockpit. We’ll film an update video soon on how we install it and share it with you to see how it’s working out 👌🏻

Hi - great video on this fascinating topic. We will be sailing from Antigua down to Grenada this winter and we’re looking as this solution. I’m curious about 2 things - (1) have you had any issues so far with the 60 days limit? And (2) how has coverage been in the various locations you have sailed to since installing the kit? Thanks!
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Год назад
Hi stuart, pleased you enjoyed this episode and hope that you have a blast sailing south. We have now used starlink everywhere between st Martin and Grenada without issue. In general we don’t stay in one place long enough to test the 60 day limit but as far as I can work out, they are not currently enforcing it. In the case of RV package it appears they just reduce the quality of service the longer you stay somewhere but that only appears to be in the case of built up locations with many users. We have had a near faultless experience so far. Now that they are opening up caribbean coverage, it has been getting better also as the dish spends more time looking up than north so sat coverage must have improved.

I heard that you have to take the antenna back to the home address after 2 months. any news regarding that?
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Год назад
We were thinking the same but it appears to be in the wording of the RV plan. We have to change country every 2 months (we are nomadic so rarely can we stay in a single country more than 3 anyway). The residential package with portability switched on does require you to return to base every 2 months (to hold your spot open in that geofenced area). RV package doesn’t have a reserved space in any geofenced cell so you don’t have to maintain your space anywhere. Drawback is that if you go to a busy cell, you are the lowest of the low when it comes to service priority. So it’s not all roses. 😆

@RedSeas
@RedSeas Год назад
It is a question that comes up a far amount. We have run it through most of the Caribbean and it’s been working great. As a rule of thumb we assume 12 miles due to the size and shape of the starlink geo-cell coverage but to be honest, we don’t do much web browsing off shore as we are usually enjoying sailing and getting offline for a bit. Until the 5G plans develop a little more, we would still not consider starlink a life safety system like those offered by iridium for example.

So our research found that the RV package sets the 60 day limit to being in another country from the registered address. But that this means if you stay in that one international country for 60 days. We would love to install Starlink on our boat but there is this annoying thing in the TOS about it only being usable on the same continent as the shipping address. That's a real bummer :/ And then there is the 60 day challenge. Where you're only allowed 60 days in a different country. The tech clearly works it's just a shame you have to work around stuff like this. I wish starlink would come out with a crusing version (same ip rating as maretim dishy, no 60 day limit, no continent limit and maybe even slow connection offshore). I doubt that's going to happen but it would be freaking awesome :)

Absolutely, we’ve been watching the updates for some time and waiting until things lined up to make it worth it. We’re aware of the continent limit but we’re hoping things have changed by the time we need to switch it over. And we got the RV version rather than the Residential with Portability so we are not limited to 60 days anywhere - we are fully mobile, as our lifestyle demands. I’m sure there will be a cruising version eventually, which will better suit the needs of sailors, but we couldn’t wait that long for the benefits of being connected so we’ve jumped on it now and hope it works out. So far so good! But we’ll keep you updated on how it’s working out for us 👌🏻

Yeah, we just got a message the other day that mobile - global is going up 100% to $400 a month! Have you ever heard of a service going up 100%?!?

@@RedSeas this is musk 101 imo, he will raise prices based on demand. Look at Tesla, they are shaving the prices of the model Y and are begging people to buy them at 0.99% interest rates. If they were sold out he’d jack the price up. Maybe that’s what’s going on with the starlink, not really sure. Those satellites only last so long and they have to keep deploying new ones to replace them also, so there are recurring costs to them. Not sure they have enough out there for that end of life though.

I know this is old but I’m by now you have discovered that you can set your phone to WiFi calling and can make and receive phone calls
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment. So not all networks allow for WiFi calling unfortunately. Sadly most of the places we have been, the local networks have not supported it so we have stuck to WhatsApp and online video call services for the most part.

Do you mean can we live stream? If so, yes and we have actually done a few of these for our patreons as well as one or two for RU-vid. It’s been great and surprisingly reliable.

@@RedSeas No. I was thinking about a webcam showing the sea around you 24/7 for example, or anything that you can show in real time 24/7.

The RV package is pretty much as low as it gets for our situation. When you think that we both stopped our cell package, have no land line and all our communications now go thru starlink, it’s not quite as expensive as it may first appear. Bundle your home phone, internet and 2 cell phone packages together (which would otherwise be monthly rolling contracts or pay per MB) and it’s pretty competitive for our use case.

@@RedSeas fair point. Can you still run a sim card through the starlink system? Like a separate slot as backup?
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Год назад
The supplied router is pretty basic and only offers WiFi connectivity. We have expanded the network to allow for our cabled devices as well as a 5G modem and range extender. Not something that many users of starlink will need, I imagine but we have taken that approach for the odd locations where starlink may not work (which we haven’t found quite yet but watch this space).

@@RedSeas I understand where you are coming from. Its just: I am interested in details on starlink on a sailboat, so I clicked on the thumbnail based on the title to see what kind of info you could provide about it, not about other connectivity options. So that first 7 minutes-for me-was frustrating. I hope you do some follow-up vids on your starlink experiences and set-up. Fair winds and following seas!

Cheers. We hope to do some follow up videos as we get to know the system and what it can do. There are a lot of unknowns in this new frontier so we will try to do our part to answer these as we discover them. For future reference, we try to add time stamped chapters to our videos to avoid any frustration when searching for a specific part of a video. Perhaps we could have highlighted that at the start of this video as I’m sure your not the only person to want to jump to the big news. 😉

Since your using the residential dish out at sea,, and it's not meant for out of the sea compared to the maritime ,Elon musk did say that will void your dishes warranty fyi, and I will let you know that they do have software that can detect when your dishes in motion. So when you're at sea the software will let Starlink know that you're not using the correct dish for being out at sea, and that may void your dish warranty, someone already tested this and they did get a notice from Starlink that since their dish is in motion they may void the warranty, the phone to router is not a real speed test compared to router to internet, The phone to router is just the speed between your phone and router. It has nothing to do with your actual internet speed
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 2 года назад
Indeed, the maritime package is priced more for commercial use and we certainly can’t afford it so we had to make some concessions. As we live full time on Indioko and have no land based home, warranty’s are kind of useless anyway. We are next really able to return things when we are so far from civilisation so that is why buying starlink was such a leap for us. If it doesn’t work out, we will be out of pocket a fair amount.

Hi, I just replied to your email on this also. It in general yes! Our starlink has been performing great with very few dropouts. The biggest enemy to starlink are obstructions. So when we anchor in a mountainous area, we see more dropouts than at sea or in remote islands.
