It is a mimo devices. You may need two antennas connected to the antennae ports.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this. Most radio antennas need to be properly grounded. With your directional mounted on a painters pole it doesn’t have a ground. Might be something to try anyway.
@wpiofm
@wpiofm 5 лет назад
Grounding is for protection not for function. (unless you're talking about A.M. radio broadcast) Edit: E.G. your phone is a radio transciever with an antenna. Is it grounded?
@SojournerClaus
@SojournerClaus 5 лет назад
Yagi antennas normally do not require a ground plane. The ground(ing) may be confused with a ground plane required for some antennas such as the magnetic dipole antennas commonly used on vehicles. The ferrous metals that allow magnetic antennas to 'attach' act as that ground plane. Aluminum roofs can also provide the ground plane but will either require a mechanical connection to the roof or a ferrous metal plate can be attached to the roof to attach with the magnet.

@butchkelin3762
@butchkelin3762 5 лет назад
I did not follow your setup. I have the weboost directional attenae but have not done much field testing. As I understand it the Yaggi directional attenae connects to an amplifier and the amplifier is connected to a retransmitter inside your rig. Then the jetpack will pick up the amplified cell signal inside your rig and broadcast the wifi signal for laptops. It is important to keep the outside directional antenae as far from the retransmitter insider your rig as posible to avoid feedback. A lot of people get confused between the cellular signal coming from the cell tower and the wifi signal the computer can pick up. Thanks for sharing your experiences, educational and entertaining.

Your external range extender antenna might be too close to the metal box (van) in which it's mounted? Might be de-tuning it. Happens when you have an antenna too close to another antenna.
@jfinnall
@jfinnall 5 лет назад
The directional antenna was mounted on an insulated pole. Is the omni antenna grounded to the van body by any chance? Not sure if that makes any difference at the frequencies that it operates. Also, check the impedance between the antenna systems and on the WeBoost requirements. The directional maybe designed for Wifi frequencies and not cellular frequencies. So frequency range might be something to check as well.

So I have switched to this model mifi 8800L from the previous touch screen one and let me tell you this is TOP of the line you are going to get for internet. I live about 10 miles from closest tower in a very rural town surrounded by trees and behind trees is a big body of water. This sucker is placed in one spot above a porch door in my house on stilts. Plugged in a 10 foot cord sends WiFi to my netgear extender which is LAN plugged to my netgear router! Router is set in access point mode and it sends the new WiFi both 2.4 and 5G throughout my entire home flawlessly I can get 4-25 mbps depending on time of day but it is Internet for while house. Battery last forever and don’t swell this one don’t get hot like previous models on 24/7. And...I just use the battery from my old one if it don’t charge fast enough I’ll swap out. Done maybe twice in 6 months. Amazing buy, wish it were a tad faster but works great kids play fortnite and stream and I have a 1.5 dsl slower than crap separate line for backup lol. Oh, unlimited truely my sim is on a grandfathered plan no caps no throttle. Check eBay cost me 40$ a month well worth it! Or I heard now the pre-paid is $60 a month truly unlimited too! Oh so try ensuring you have that sucker in an optimal sweet spot. Speed test is your best friend you only need a couple mbps to have decent service no joke!

you need to spin the directional antenna a bit as in rotate the antenna... you may be trying to access a vertically polarized antenna while you are oriented horizontally... that will loose you about 60-80% of your signal...

What band(s) is the antenna tuned to receive? The wave length at 700 Mhz vs. 1700 Mhz is a lot. There needs to be a network analyzer proof test run on that antenna through that coax and connectors. It will reveal the frequencies it is resonat to, despite the seller's claims.

MIMO = multiple in multiple out. Try 2 antennas set at 45 degrees from each other. Your stubby antenna most likely has the 2 built in horizontal and vertical. That being said I still only get about 40ms ping 17 down and 2 up in rural Missouri but it’s better than anything else out here and believe me I’ve tried everything. Waiting for starlink!

Seven, thanks for the video. I purchased the same jet pack about 2 months ago and when it works I am very happy with the speed it delivers. With mine, I am having two problems first the 8800L will shut down and turn right back on all by its self. The second problem I have with mine is while I am connected the 8800L will drop my device and then reconnect. I have talked with Verizon and they tell me Verizon is aware of both problems and are working on a fix. Have you experienced either of these problems? A tech group I am a member of is recommending you not purchase the 8800L until Verizon comes up with a fix.

Two problems probably from others using wifi near by and crowding your signal , try using a different channel and maybe change the bandwidth this should help alot with you getting bumped offline. The unit itself shutting down. Could be a bad device , is it exceptionally hot all the time ? Does it shut down when not on the WAN world area network ? Like if you're just on your LAN local area network at home does it still shut off ? If so it's probably a bad device/hotspot. If it only shuts off online WAN then you probably have a sneaky little hacker playing with you, in that case change your IP address to something in the 172.?? Range. 192.168.0.1 originally was a naval intelligence IP used as a spy IP address

Seven did you make sure the Verizon store was a corporate store and not a franchise Verizon store ? Does signal strength depend on what height the directional antenna is at ? Could the directional antenna itself or the cable or both possibly be defective ? Does it matter if the white part on the directional antenna is pointing to the side or pointing straight up to the sky may be ?
@SevenWanderstheWorld
@SevenWanderstheWorld 5 лет назад
yes, it was a corporate store (I specifically asked). height does help... the directional antenna was higher than the stubby. possible defect, but someone camped nearby had the same directional antenna and I spoke to him the next day and he was getting similar poor results. directions say it must point directly at the tower like I was attempting. no idea why it wasn't working

I've been doing tons of research the last couple days and learned 2 things. boosters only boost one of the 4 channels inside the 8800 and in theory will cripple the speed. 2nd, it appears the 8800 takes 2 antennas (and 2 boosters if you want to boost) or for max speed you have to void the warranty and solder another 2 antennas inside for 4 antennas. all the antennas are to be mounted at 45 degree angles to each other. it is crazy complicated and I'm still figuring it out. I'll be doing another video in a couple weeks once I find a solution! ps. you can do a keyword search for MIMO 4x4 antennas and how they work to get you started

lol I bought this to try out and never saw anything higher than 10mbps download anywhere in town. Find out if you can get this same good Verizon hotspot on a device that has an ethernet port? This is so you can wire it to a router in your home and broadcast the internet throughout a house. I just tried the Netgear Nighthawk mr1100 unlocked with a third parties SIM card. The product is called "Blue magic" a cellular isp that recently started getting popular in my area after Hurricane Michael. I wasn't getting good signal strength and download speeds on it in my area. In contrast, my friend was getting 30 Mbps (great for this area) living approx. 10 miles from me and has an At&t tower near him. The device can also pick up internet from Verizon towers in my area. When connected to Verizon tower the signal strength was improved but the download speeds went down compared to the faster download speed of the At&t tower that it would connect to but have a poor unreliable signal.

Well, you did one thing right, you got the 8800L, however, your knowledge of antennas and amplifiers seems to be lacking based on how you described things. these topics are not for laymen. that said one needs a MIMO setup plugged directly into the (test) ports on the 8800L, these are actually antenna ports. you need 2 (two) properly sized wideband antennas, they MAY be yagi or log periodic (they appear similar) of the same impedance of the 8800L, which probably 50 ohms, also the cable has to be the same impedance, proper connectors and or adapters, antennas oriented in X pattern (45 degrees cross polarization) in same direction (NOThorizontal and vertical). you are also comparing in town to out of town (apples to oranges). Make a friend (like a ham radio guy) who understands cellular, antenna, AND amplifier technology.
@andys623

also, consumer boosters (amplifiers) are not made to take advantage of MIMO antennas built into cell hotspots. MIMO was designed for high speed/throughput

@danishknight2798
@danishknight2798 5 лет назад
Plus the Phoenix towers were probably upgraded to use multiple bands (8800 is 5 bands) while the rural tower(s) is single band connection. Simply, 100Mbps divided by 5 is 20 Mbps theoretical at best, and with congestion of everyone uses the same tower your speed test is not bad. Secondly, the 8800 has no 3G fallback option as the 7730 (previous version-last year) has which for this year makes more sense in low connectivity areas. (More to seven and not you)

Your pontification on MIMO cross-polarization was and is not needed here as any layman can watch a few videos, go to LTEfix or other website, order the right cables, adapters, erect a pole and slap it all together. @@andys623 Our hotspot is throttled at 25G in a month on LTE and unlimited on 3G which is fine as we are in the woods most of the time with low connectivity. After 25G in a month, we are fine on LTE for a decent connection in low population density areas which is our use case scenario.

Nice video and enjoyed your test. I am angry that Verizon provides such a strong signal for their hotspots but not their phones. I will have to look into this. The directional antenna will provide a better connection but that does not boost your signal. You need to amplify the signal which weakens as you get further away from the tower. You should test the antenna close to the tower to see what your best results are. The antenna should provide a better connection than your cell phone gets from the same tower. In the city your were possibly only blocks away from a tower while here you are perhaps a mile or more away which explains the weaker signal. And the tower may not be broadcasting the same signal that the city tower does. There are many factors to consider in cellular signals and so many that I fell asleep reading about them. But in our layman’s terms her are a few ideas: Type of signal is important. 4GLE seems to be the fastest for consumers but businesses can get faster. 5G is coming. Strength of signal is important. Cellular signals are naturally stronger close to the tower. Type of receiver. Older computers and cell phones do not have the chips that receive the newer types of WiFi. Mixing old and new receivers on your hotspot. It is rumored that the WiFi routers will default to the slowest connect units. Test result variations: Speedtest will deliver different results using the same computer at the same location. Try running your speed test 5 or more times with one minute between tests. 4 lane highways bog down during rush hour and so do cell towers and WiFi routers as more people log in. Cellular signals can be blocked by mountains, trees, buildings and other RVs. Rain seems to interfere with cellular signals so we might assume fog, smoke etc. will also reduce the signal. There are other factors but I risk making mistakes and so I will stop here.

I should do a followup video. about a week after this video my Verizon speeds dropped to under 1 megabit (1% of what I was getting). this appears to be extreme throttling during peak hours. it was bad enough I could not load gmail. I had to give up on Verizon and go back to Sprint where I'm getting 15megabits. also, I returned the directional antenna I purchased and now have a MIMO antenna that I'm really liking. I'll do a video soon on that system

Not all antennas are the same. It has more to do with things like signal aggregation (using multiple channels at once) and having a tower that broadcasts multiple channels and a hot spot/antenna combo to receive them. If you have a MIMO hot spot (multiple in, multiple out) and you put on an antenna that drops you to one channel, that's an issue. It the tower is only broadcasting 1 or 2 channels, and you have a 4 channel capable hot spot, you'll only get 2. Truth is, this test isn't really fair. You can't compare solid city cell reception on multiple channels to rural weaker signals on fewer channels. You should have also tried the test without any antennas and compared it to the unit all by itself with it's internal antenna. You could also look up to see which channels your provider is broadcasting at your location. This video is pretty good at explaining this and other concepts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sxsEEDsgM3c.html Your hotspot 8800L is an excellent Category 18 device. You need to match antenna capabilities to this device, and be aware of what the tower has to offer. So there's 3 main factors (aside from signal strength and S/N ratio) 1. Device capability, 2. Antenna capability, and 3. Tower capability. Any one of these can be a bottle neck.

Seven, go watch this video from Mobile Internet Resource Center. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UiWt1yNBY2A.html . These guys know there stuff when it comes to mobile internet. It explains why your not getting boost with your directional. I have a similar setup to yours and have found the directional really only benefits when I am 10+ miles from a tower or I am trying to shoot for a different tower to avoid a congested tower. Also check that you are not using a 50 ohm antenna when you need a 75 (or vice versa, not familiar with your particular setup).

While the hotspot is able to do channel aggregation to attain higher than 100Mbps, look like your account (or possibly everybody's) is throttled at 100Mbps in order not to avoid overload the network. Booo! It's funny how some people try to get away from society, yet they're still so much attached to their online toys. True solitude means no wired or wireless connections, just lick a stamp for the good 'ol snail mail. LOL
