VERIZON JETPACK UNLIMITED DATA REVIEW - NEW NO THROTTLE VERIZON HOTSPOT // Is it really true? A Verizon hotspot with no throttle? A Verizon Jetpack unlimited data plan that is truly no throttle and unlimited data for digital nomads? The Verizon prepaid unlimited hotspot is an unlimited data plan, which we’ve seen before, but though it’s unlimited data on the Verizon hotspot, it was throttled at 15-20 GB. A huge downer for us digital nomads who bought the Verizon unlimited jetpack previously. So now the Verizon Jetpack unlimited data 2018 plan, that was just released, might be the solution for you if you want to have a Verizon unlimited data PREPAID plan - which is what I did. I’m testing the Verizon unlimited hotspot plan and for a couple of months and following it up with a Verizon unlimited data review to see if it truly will work for us digital nomads who consume large amounts of data on the road or in the air.
The Verizon Jetpack unlimited data cost for the prepaid plan is $65 (if prepaid and as of the publishing of this video). So if you’re looking for a Verizon unlimited data hotspot plan that won’t cap you and throttle you, then this might be the plan for you. Watch how I set the plan up on an existing Verizon account that already has a hotspot. www.storychasing.com/verizondata

The "tier 1" service is federally mandated with all carriers. Emergency responders who are enrolled in the program, pay an extra monthly fee if the carrier wants to charge it, PLUS an additional airtime fee if they actively place a call on the plan. So don't worry about tier 1 unless there's an emergency there. There are also more tiers for NVMOs, but Verizon has very few of them other than Comcast Xfinity Mobile. Priorities for NVMOs are confidential.

chrisanamac what’s interesting is I also have homeschooled children in SC and when I was in Verizon in August, I explained that I needed a hotspot without data caps, they made no mention at all that this plan was around. I picked one up today and have been on the phone with tech support because it’s extremely slow. My phone is Verizon 4G LTE. Speed tests of the two 4G LTE (phone and hotspot) get drastically different results with phone much faster. I’m getting download speeds of 1.2mbps or slower on the hotspot and 50+mbps on the phone. Anyway, good luck homeschooling and hope your hotspot experience is better than mine so far.

Thanks for turning us on to this plan. We're on our second month. Happy so far. What they don't tell you, in the fine print, is that you get shoved to the bottom of the totem pole, so to speak, on the tower. So when it gets really busy, one may expect the lag monster to show up (or worse, your signal gets dropped). I noticed performance goes way down during prime time.
@radiowebst
@radiowebst 5 лет назад
The speed issues in the rural area might be related to your jetpack. Some of the faster speeds are only available on certain bands or frequencies. If your jet pack does not cover the frequencies used in certain areas for LTE you will be using the slower and likely more congested bands.
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 5 лет назад
☺️Thanks for that tip Brian!
@radiowebst
@radiowebst 5 лет назад
@@AmberJBaldwin You are welcome, I am a wireless engineer and have had part in designing or building a lot of these types of networks. There are charts out there for the various bands (and as such frequencies) used for LTE by each carrier. Any phones or hot spot devices being used or purchased, you should check the specs to make sure that model or device actually supports all the bands for the carrier a person plans on using (in this case Verizon). This would also ring true for any cell boosters people are looking to purchase. For instance I am using an unlocked GSM phone on Mint Mobile (it uses T-Mobiles network), it supports all the bands that T-Mobile uses for LTE. I get speed tests of over 80 meg download pretty consistently. This is likely due to few devices that work on some of the new LTE bands and that the new bands have implemented newer versions of the LTE standard to allow them more speed and capacity. As other users have posted, in some locations the backhaul infrastructure to any particular tower you are connected to may not have been upgraded to a higher speed connection. The carriers are pushing to bring fiber to each tower but rural markets are usually the last to get them, if it is even feasible to have that done at that location. So it is not that unlikely that some towers may not have a high enough speed backhaul for users to get high speed connections they have been seeing in other locations.

@danteerskine7678
@danteerskine7678 2 года назад
@@AmberJBaldwin no. This isn't related to your jetpack. I actually use a D link dwr 932 jetpack which is unlocked and for some reason, 3g plus is more faster and more convenient and consistent than the LTE band. Maybe people don't use HSDPA and rely heavily on 4g which causes 4g to be so slow compared to HSDPA

I have had the Jetpack $65 prepaid plan for 3 weeks. It seems as soon as I hit 60gb of data my jetpack got throttled, and not only during "congested times". My jetpack will be downloading at .538kbps, While my phone (on a 3rd party verizon plan) will run at 4-6 mbps download. I live out in the middle of nowhere and the closest tower is 8 miles away in a very small town. I'm thinking there shouldn't be any congestion. I'll wait and see how this last week go's to decide if I keep it.

I would think in a congested area those would be the busiest times. But r aflot of boondockers we stay away from larger populations/urban areas/cities where tower traffic would be crowded. Their experience was that it was pretty good! Anyway, check out their site for more info!

Great info. Thank you! But yikes! $65 a month? I travelled with a friend using an AT&T mifi off and on for 8 months. His mifi is just $15 a month! When my Verizon cell phone hot spot couldn’t stream, which was about 85% of the time, his ATT mifi had perfect signal streaming and uploading. So I used his ATT mifi about 85% of the time when we travelled together. This was in Arizona and the West Coast CA through Oregon. And when Verizon throttles I could never stream RU-vid or even do comments. Not happy with Verizon so far. And $65 a month PLUS your cell phone bill? Yikes! I’m debating between a Verizon jet pack or a wifi booster.

If you want real, unbridled internet (use all you want) then $65 a month is a very reasonable deal. If you can get along with basically doing nothing unless you are on WiFi, your friend's mifi sounds great.

I just got this recently and I love the plan but my mifi router keeps rebooting over and over again. I spoke with Verizon about it and they're going to do a replacement but made it clear I had to do it within 14 days of purchase. They seemed very confused on how to proceed on pre-paid plans.

The jetpack you use will also determine your download and upload speeds which may be why your Verizon didn't do well in the desert and AT&T did. I'm just learning that myself because I am trying to buy one. Was going to buy the cheaper Ellipsis until i found out the newer jetpacks have triple and quadruple the upload/download speeds in same locations.

Verizon's new way of throttling comes down to streaming video and congestion - If you are cool with 480p and are reasonable with your usage their basic Unlimited plan is cool. They have beyond unlimited that streams HD video. I don't think they are capping Upstream connections afaik. Right now I am able to upload faster than download which is pretty awesome for video editing and syncing. So basically the idea of "throttling" is pretty passe, it's more sophisticated than what it used to be. I just got a new plan @ Verizon a few days ago. I bought a OnePlus 6t and it has been fantastic so far. I was concerned because I live in a rural area and the OP6t is an LTE-only phone. However, coverage has been great so far. Tethering is now included in the unlimited plan for no extra fee, but I haven't really tried it out yet.

Here’s so detailed info for everyone in regards to network management & how networks actually operate. - signal strength & how many people are on a “tower” are really only one aspect of the equation, especially in regards to network management. When you use a tower, all your info is routed back to a switch room. Switch locations are usually not on site at the cell sites, rather they are scattered throughout the next nearest city in various locations, usually those big no-window buildings with a Verizon or AT&T symbol on them. I used to live down the block from a AT&T one. In a Major city like Los Angeles, the towers & switches are set up to handle hundreds of thousands of devices at any given time. Thus why network management is less likely to effect you as heavily in a urban setting. There’s way more capacity very close by. Speaking about Verizon specifically, when your in the desert and you see a tower sitting in the middle of nowhere, most of the time that tower is only receiving power from electrical lines heading to it and NOT fiber. Data is transmitted using large “repeater” dishes attached to the side to bounce signal from a switch room somewhere near a city hundreds of miles from tower to tower into the middle of no where. Since this is basically a big repeater array, there’s a lot of room for signal interference. But beyond that, it’s the issues with switches. It’s asking one switch to handle hundreds of miles of space on a repeater network. It just doesn’t make for great speeds. - AT&T set up their company very differently than Verizon. Most of their existing sites were buy outs from other companies during the great GSM acquisitions. Plus they had one of the nations most complete pre-existing network of existing cable work / permits for use out of anyone else since they were effectively one of the first in the telephone business in the states. A decent portion of AT&T’s network is actually hard wired in due to this, and they have a stronger network of switching stations available. - Another thing to heavily keep in mind is that LTE is a very general term for a very Broad spectrum. LTE exists in so many forms, from LTE Intro, LTE-Advance, LTE-MIMO, LTE- LAA Format, the list goes on and on and on. A cell site has to be completely updated in order to handle each new rendition of the tech, which just doesn’t happen that often. Dense urban centers like downtown LA have the backbone for the new MIMO / LAA format in place, which can allow for gigabit LTE speeds (a way to keep consistency between the soon coming 5G system), but that tech doesn’t exactly make sense for a small desert town of 2k people. Some locations are strictly in place for service only. I wouldn’t doubt for a second they may still be running intro level LTE antennas, which allow for a general 15-30MBps speed range in good conditions. LTE is a Evolution of the GSM / HSPSA backbone. Verizon is new to this game!!! Their CDMA / EVDO backbone had to be totally moved to this format, as everyone knows HSPSA destroyed EVDO in long term development. AT&T has been in this game for a long time, and the network was designed to handle this type of architecture from the 3G (HSPSA) beginnings. Verizon has always shelled more cash out for spectrum. But the game is getting closer by the day. I personally have Verizon on my iPhone XS (been trying to find a market which services LTE-LAA to test the gigabit speeds but haven’t found one yet) - and a netgear nighthawk LTE (AT&T’s first LAA format router) with a unlimited plus plan grandfathered from last year. I’ve had very little to no slow downs on AT&T in rural / metro markets, with the occasional exceptions here or there. If you have AT&T on a hotspot / unlimited plan... the NEW Nighthawks are coming out soon which will have the first ever chips which can use the 5G network. Save your pennies cause it’s worth the upgrade. - personal recommendation, the nighthawk allows for you to plug in a external router via Ethernet... I pare a Apple AirPort Extreme AC format WiFi I picked up used on amazon to my nighthawk and the speeds / stability of my network / range of WiFi couldn’t be better. Turn off any and all WiFi functionality on the hotspot and use it as strictly a hub to move LTE data in and out, and put the backbone of the work on the WiFi router. - Happy travels everyone!!

Excellent post. Do keep in mind most all of att towers support MIMO(Multiple in multiple out). So for someone using att lte for there main internet you can use 2 directional antennas setup in mimo configuration that will in most situations double your download speeds and allow for carrier aggregation. The good thing about 5G is it was designed to be used as home internet. Where as previous generations was built more with mobile in mind. Unless you live in the mounts with a tower not within 5 Mike's then you can get really good internet for 29 a month. If anyone needs help setting it up or wants to know how just drop me a message an I'll be glad to shoe you the ropes on how to make it happen.

I've been with Verizon since 2011 and I use 50/70 gb a month and I've never been throttled, I've noticed a few times when I'm over the 22 gb that I have to wait when I'm on a busy tower but I've never been throttled. I find traveling across America in general, is that rural setting have slower speeds and get congested more with fewer people. I believe ( not sure if it’s true but my thoughts) why would carriers put BIG internet pipes and upgrade hardware to be able to handle 1000s of people for high speed access in........Bill Wyoming where there might be 50 people. You would certainly need all that in bigger city with lots of people.

We ordered the unlimited prepaid jetpack service and for some reason they could not get it to activate so after 6 hours (literally 6 hours) we requested they just refund our card and they all the sudden hung up on us. You mentioned the little headache and several different people you talked with, well your right but it's a HUGE headache. 3 weeks now still no refund and regular Verizon (non prepaid) said they have no reason to not give us a refund since the service was never activated however prepaid keeps refusing. Prepaid has denied our request for refund 3 times now. When you call prepaid for be ready to wait on hold and get hung up on several times, they did this to the regular Verizon agent we spoke with as well. We were told (by Verizon) the prepaid side does this all the time and they are very bad to deal with. The regular Verizon has been nothing but apologetic and said if they could they would refund our 65.00 however they have no control over prepaid. I am honestly surprised Verizon has their name attached to this prepaid division since they have no control over what prepaid does.Regular Verizon explained the prepaid to us as; yes its Verizon network however prepaid customers not given the same priority as regular Verizon customers. Regular customers have top priority of speeds and prepaid is at the bottom. Keep in mind this is just my experience but it was enough to keep me away from Verizon completely.

Mike, you are right about this. I spent 5 months trying to get a refund from them and spoke to on average 5 people each time I called, got hung up on 1/3 of the time, was told they fixed the issue and I would get my money returned. I went to their stores, I tried everything. Finally I changed my bank account so they could not access it any longer, returned their equipment, deducted the money they owed me and they turned me over to collections! Every time I told the collections people the story they dropped it. I would have sued them but small claims in our State has been changed to make it almost impossible.

We are full timers and use a VZ unlimited shared unlimited plan with two iPhones and one iPad with cellular. I was checking out the VZ wireless website and got into a chat session with a rep. He said I could add a Jetpack to our account for only $20 and it would not be throttled after 15g as my iPhones are when I use the hotspot. I assume it would be subject to the 22g network managed limited depending on the cell tower traffic. I decided to visit a VZ store soon and get their take on this. A Jetpack would make things easier in our trailer since my laptop and my wife's iPad do not have cellular connectivity.

I returned our 2nd 8800L Jetpack to Verizon today. I was supposed to exchange it for a new one since tech support told me it was defective. Instead the Verizon customer service people made me so mad I returned it, ate the restocking fee and walked away. The 8800L seemed very promising and when it worked it was fine. It did not work on a regular reliable basis. It began dropping us off the network, frequently. So often that it was useless as an internet service providing device. I called the manufacturer, INSEEGO, and the man I spoke with admitted they have had many complaints about the units dropping off, not letting anyone log on, appearing to be on the internet but downloading nothing. This went on for 3 weeks and 2 units. The 2nd one worked for 10 days almost flawlessly, and then started the same BS. Verizon tech people, tier 1, tried to help but nothing they offered fixed the issue. When I signed up for the unlimited prepaid plan, and then had problems and called tech support, 2 out of 3 tier 1 tech support agents would not talk to me because it was prepaid. They sent to Prepaid tech support, which was a joke. No one in prepaid tech support knew anything about the device. I knew more, which is not saying much. Verizon is a nightmare company. No more tries with Verizon. Looking into resellers of unlimited data and a device that actually works.

They are still throttled on congested towers, as prepaid is the lowest priority as far as service. AT&T has same type of plan, throttles ONLY during congested times after 22GB and it's only $29.95. Have been running entire home network with it for months now, including Home Automation. These all have one big downfall, stuck behind the 4G carriers NAT (prevents web-hooks (like IFTTT), hosting local web sites, or any type of incoming web requests). I get varying speeds and have went over 40gb but not very often.

- Happy travels everyone!! www.att.com/devices/netgear/nighthawk-lte-mobile-hotspot-router.html#sku=sku8820339

The link you provided not longer shows the unlimited plan only 60GB FOR 70 BUCKS, that sucks. Thanks for the information anyhow, how much are you paying for AT&T?
