Filipino Martial Arts is an incredible discipline to learn, but there are 2 skills that are sometimes neglected in FMA...and they are super important! In this video I break down a moment during a DRILL where we begin in a clinch fight and at some point a knife draw is earned. Remember this is only a drill and the intensity can be ramped UP or DOWN depending on the training goals and intentions of the practitioner.
Here is a brief set of guidelines:
1. Take it nice and easy at first. Work safely up in intensity especially if you are new to these kinds of drills.
2. In the clinch, have some objectives such as working for head position, working for dominant angles, wrist and hand fighting, bicep pummelling and creating openings for striking. No need to deliver these strikes hard, just "show" the vulnerability and move on. It is only a drill, not a fight.
3. Have a winning point or moment so that the drill can cycle and you can learn things in different phases such as entries, traps, deployment and so on!
4. Have fun with this! While the subject of knife defense can be dark and scary, it is important to keep a healthy mindset during training.
