As a Class A contractor with 37 years of experience I have been watching Matt’s videos for a while but I will have to say that the average person is definitely getting the wrong idea if you think you can put a flammable product (plywood) on the walls and ceiling of your garage without having a 1 hour fire rated shield behind it. Code REQUIRES this and is often met by installing 5/8” Sheetrock. I know Matt doesn’t usually comment on the responses to his videos but if you are thinking about doing this please call your local building department to confirm what you are proposing will not result in you getting into trouble and risking the lives of your family members.

We have this same setup and love it. The insulated door really makes a difference, especially in our bedroom which is above the garage. For anyone wanting this, make sure you hire someone who is VERY FAMILIAR with installing this type of opener. We had someone come out to install one and they kept commenting on how horrible they are and never work properly, etc, but installed it anyways. It didn't work, wouldn't open fully, wouldn't close fully, would stop mid open...UGH! He suggested we call another installer to check it out since we didn't a different one and he said this type of opener was junk. We made sure the next garage door company we had out knew what they were doing before we hired them. The whole unit was far too low on the wall to allow the direct drive to bring the door up all the way, the wiring was incorrect, and we needed the raised rails which weren't installed. It works perfectly now. They are great units, if installed correctly!

@qwaszxpolkmncvb
@qwaszxpolkmncvb 2 года назад
I will start with this - DO NOT TAMPER WITH A GARAGE DOOR IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TRAINED. THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Sealing a overhead door is actually simple. That's if you have a sectional door. Things to consider are if it's so tight to the opening it rubs excessively or so if it's loose there's a gap. There's also the top roller adjustments, where the opener's close limit is adjusted at and also the physical force applied to the door by the opener. The condition of stop moulding and it's placement also. If you have a enclosed carport you may find the concrete sloped to one side and weather stripping doesn't seal the bottom on one side of the door. Even the angle of the opener's arm is a factor. 1. The horizontal moulding goes on first. Trim part nails flush to the inside of the opening. 2. The vertical mouldings go from the top to about ⅜“ - ½“ from the ground. That prevents any bowing if the house "settles". Use paintable caulk to seal both ends and the front side of the trim around the entire opening. Train the flaps in the upper corners for the horizontal flap to overlap the vertical flaps. 4. Weather stripping is easy to replace. There's usually small screws hidden on it's edges holding it in place on what's called the "bottom extrusion". It slides into channels from one end to another. It's a few inches wider than the door and has the excess tucked into itself on both ends. If you have a sloped drive and there's a gap find a old garden hose and insert it inside of the weather strip. Use just enough to close the gap. You wouldn't want the door closing too hard where the rise is. The bottom of the door takes quite a bit of abuse. If the extrusion is damaged beyond repairand you need a new strip it's easy to replace. If mice chews up the strip replace it with gray. They're less likely to chew it. 5. I CAN'T ADVISE MESSING WITH THE DOOR'S HARDWARE OR TAMPERING WITH THE OPENER. If you see loose hardware, bent track (particularly the verticals) or the door isn't tight call a reputable technician to service it. One thing I've seen, especially at newly constructed houses around Knoxville, TN is vertical tracks resting on the ground. That's a rookie mistake and a sign the installers don't have service experience. Just like the moulding there should be a gap to prevent bowing. It's a extremely negligent mistake. Danger being the door possibly flying off the track. The other stuff is safe for an average person to repair. Let a technician do the rest. It's easy and they usually can address any not so obvious issues they see immediately. A no parts inspection, adjust and lube can be done in way under a hour for $85.00 and no tax.

Hello Matt, love the progress of your home! What a great choice for your Overhead Door and Garage Door Motor, excellent choice. I know your a stickler for detail while making sure everything is right. Therefore, I will tell you the “Cable Tensioner Monitor” on your Liftmaster 8500W is installed incorrectly, it is upside down which will cause it to fail in time should dust and debris make its way into that region (refer to your installation manual). Being in the Overhead Door industry for many years I take pride in getting things right. Reach out if needed and can explain how to correct your issue. Keep up the great work…👍🏻

So close to how I did my garage. My garage has 2x6, R23 walls, Liftmaster (though the center overhead Liftmaster) with MyQ, High R-value 3 layer garage doors with double-pane glass, and a Mitsubishi mini-split. I went with a 15,000 BTU mini-split in an 800 sq ft. 3 car garage. I set it at 55 in the winter and 85 in the summer, but I was working in the garage on a day in the 20s outside in the winter and set it to 70, and it held just fine. I also did can lights in the garage in my work area. I'm just missing the cool wood - mine is 100% sheetrock (and 5/8 sheetrock for the fire rating)...BTW, also a solid, fire-rated door between the garage and the living space.

Good idea, but would try not to over-spec. While Tesla uses the 50 Amp, GM tends to be 40 Amp. Some installs need GFI Breakers (if plugs), and some do not need GFI (if wall-chargers). Basic "safe" and flexible would be either 3/4" conduit + a pull string, or some #6 circuits ran back to the circuit breaker panel. You can add correct breaker and plug (or wall mount) when you know what you are getting.

It is exceedingly easy to install and took just a couple of minutes on my Sears Garage Door opener. I think it will probably be replaced with a unit using Amazon's Sidewalk and perhaps Zigbee and WIFI as well. The single complaint I've heard about the unit is that you have to have a good WIFI connection to use it. If they do go to Sidewalk and or Zigbee, that will allow use of a low energy system that significantly improves connectivity. Easy to install and a fabulous purchase if it works for you. 12/7/21.

One thing to know and watch is the LiftMaster wall control has an issue of failing and when it does it unlocks the door latch and opens the garage door randomly. We had our garage open at 2am by itself and after I shut it the first time it would open randomly and we couldn't keep it shut. It appears something fails on the wall control electronics and so the only way to fix it was replace the wall control. Temporary fix was just remove the wall control until we got a new one. First wall control lasted around 3 years and from what I've read online this is an issue for a lot of people not a fluke for me. Love the system, don't like the fact the electronics fail in an unsafe manner for my family.

Simply pull the cord and the opener releases the grip on the chain/screw allowing the garage door to be manually lifted open so the occupants and firefighters can escape. Does the opener have something like this?

Hey Matt i noticed you have the "Green Hinges" on your door to help maintain pressure and seal the door properly. I also noticed on your old home video you installed ThermoTracks. which system would you recommend between those two? I have a new home (2019) with a well insulated door but i do notice some cold drafts in the winter.

Is this rock wool between the studs? Will you show the garage when it is ready? It already looks great.

@VulgrDisplay

The hinges are expensive and they suck. The springs on the hinges wear out rather quickly. The seal he talked about previously failed after a very short amount of time.

Did you source the prefinished maple plywood from Fine Lumber & Plywood?

Just an FYI, the LM 8500 wall controllers like to go out after three or so years and when they do, they have a tendency to open the door. 😬 The app won’t notify you if this happens. Most people just keep a backup controller or two on hand. I’m about to year three on mine so I’m a bit more vigilant right now.

Did you use the thermotracks on this door? It looks like you just went with the hinges. Did you add any weatherstripping like used on your old house with thermotracks?

Hey Matt, so the soffit in your garage is completely closed from air flow? I have the same layout with half of my garage ceiling being part of the second floor living space. My garage ceiling rafters terminate to dry wall, they don't vent into the attic. My garage is currently unconditioned, I plan on sealing my garage soffits and insulating the ceiling with closed cell foam or rockwool and adding a mini split. Do you recommend sealing my soffits and insulating it rockwool?

The MFG specs a 10-30cm install height above the protected object. Your ball is to close. And while the instinct is to mount it directly above the item being protected. It should be moved out of the corner and away from the wall a bit. There is a reason why you dont install smoke detectors in corners. Heat travels similar to smoke.

Did you put 5/8 fireguard behind your door opener under the maple? If that battery did catch fire chances r the maple would be on fire if not more before the flame was on the fireball for the required 3-5 seconds.

Any advice on a heat detector for the garage? I know smoke detectors are not recommended due to the amount of dust in the air but I can’t find any reliable heat detectors that can tie into an existing system wirelessly??

The Elide Fire gadget looks interesting, but I am concerned about whether or not it has enough mass of the materials appropriate to extinguish a battery fire. That garage door sensor is pretty nice though. I have two sensors that are plastic clipped onto the door track and when I bring a trash container in and bump it... the sensors get bumped out of alignment (oh brother!) and when I attempt to close the garage door the door will not actually close.

Isn’t it minimum code to have at least one layer of dry wall as a fire stop on your garage walls and ceilings?

The extinguisher ball will explode under fire. Not sure if it could kill an electric fire. But definitely useful when wood caught wire.

Hmm. @mattrisinger needs a cue card, he forgot the hinges for one thing. That door is dented. When I put a new two car door on my father's house more than 20 years ago we had to get three doors in a row before they delivered one that wasn't dented or crushed in some way. This was an aluminum door, not sure what using steel does to improve the door's dent resistance. Matt has also gone over that fireball extinguisher extensively before, not sure why he's repeating. And he must think the opener has a lithium battery, which it doesn't, so won't catch fire easily. I'd love to hear more about the overhead door company door's construction. What about the door joints, how are those sealed? What about the outside seals, is he still using the seals he showed at the house across the street? And are those hinges really needed if the door is very well installed? Come on, give us some actual technical content, not just a sale pitch! Getting tiresome, could be losing a subscriber here.

I wonder if the Austin, TX temperatures plus the motor heat on hot days would be enough to cause the 'fire ball' to activate. Who planels the ceiling and walls of their garage with wood panels when it could have been marble.
