These prices don't surprise me nor shock me. They're trying to drum up the prices and they're succeeding. What's surprising me is the lack of sellers. I think you two have talked about a guy with cartons of sealed games before. I'm surprised people like that haven't been capitalizing on this trend while the prices are high. It can't last forever.

Its stupid. This isn't even a rare game. You're paying hundreds of thousands for a nice box. And its probably not even that rare to find a sealed one. This bullshit isn't even about a good rare game like say Dragon Force or Shinning Force 3 (sorry I'm a Sega fan😂). Its stupid speculation. SMB is a good game printed in millions upon millions you can still buy at garage sales for 5 bucks. But with this sealed crap you don't even know if the game inside works. Arguably the most important part of owning a GAME! These aren't games anymore, they've been turned into memorabilia cause being wraped in the original 1 cent cellophane is somehow worth hundreds of thousands now so they can create a new worthless comic book and trading card market.

Im really into comics and geek stuff; back about 4-5 years ago, a guy I work with knows that and came up to me; hes like "guess what, i invested." Im like, "yeah?". "Yup, I bought Walking Dead 1-10; #1 and a few others are sealed and graded". I was a little baffled, "you just bought them now?". "Yeah its an investment." I forget how much issue 1 listed for at the time, I think like $800-$1000. But Im like "dude what did you pay?". "About $750". I was like, as a collector thats okay if you love it. But for an investment that was dumb. Its at its peak popularity now. (5 years ago). And I dont think besides #1 and others besides maybe #100 where Negan appears and Glenn dies, none of them will be worth anything (Ive seen sealed copies of #100 that are signed go for $100). I was like, "they may go up to $1000 for you someday, so you make $250? But then have to worry about theft, damage, fire, flood... Not a good investment dude. You'll probably get $500 in the end..." Its all about getting in early. If you dont have these games or comics already, dont buy them now! If you buy a #1 issue at a comic store and got it for $4, yeah cool, if it stays worthless you lost nothing (got to read a comic). If it jumps in value you have an investment. Same with any commodity - if you dont have Bitcoin already, dont buy into it now. Don't buy an existing NFT off someone that they already bought. Dont bu ya painting for millions of dollars. If its even real, you probably wont get more for it. Its all pyramid schemes. Its not worth much, but if you convince people its worth a lot and then can sell it, you make your money. But like musical chairs, someone has to be the dickhead left standing with no chair at the end. And you'll be out a lot of money.... Coins at least can be made of valuable metals... But even that market kind of a scam (like diamonds, they aren't really worth shit! Go buy a diamond for a lot, turn around and try to sell it back, not happening ha-ha). You foot the bill for everyone else who passed it off. At least only buy something you can afford, and that if you get stuck with it you still like it. Everything comes to an end, coins, stamps, model trains, player piano rolls, baseball cards... Don't be the guy at the end of the chain... So 100%, kudos to the guy who sold the comics to my buddy, YOU were the one who made out well, my buds going to be left holding the bag.
@shane_MK

@@squidracerX I agree except for the topic of a one of a kind painting. Like if someone said they bought the mona lisa for a billion dollars, I wouldn't really have a critique. It's famous and one of a kind. You could argue it's priceless. On the other hand, as you said, there would be stress involved in owning something like that. But I wouldn't call it a bad investment for any price. You do have a point about the value potentially being stagnant. So it's a bad money making investment, but it will likely hold its value better than cash will. So while you might not make money, it's like buying property. It has relatively stable value. But one of a kind, physical art is a different category. Even something like a video game box isn't necessarily bad to buy. But only if it's because you want it because you want it. Buying expensive things in the hopes of them appreciating in value is always a big risk. But take Pat for example. He bought both NWC carts. Not because he wanted to make money. However, if that was his plan, it would have paid off. The value has multiplied 5 times since he bought them. But they're very rare and very desirable. So if someone bought an nwc now to make money, it's still kind of stupid, but it wouldn't be the dumbest idea. Certainly there are better, safer investments. But it's likely the prices will continue to climb for the foreseeable future. The digital goods are where it gets weird to me. It's a thing that anyone can "experience". If you have a phone or computer, you can see the same thing as what someone else bought. Again, a real painting is different than a picture of a painting. Understandably, the difference doesn't matter to everyone. I feel like I'm rambling a bit. I definitely agree that buying something expensive to make money doesn't make sense. It might hold its value though. If currency inflates, at least the physical item inflates with it. But generated, digital goods make no sense to invest in.
@shane_MK
@shane_MK 2 года назад
@Matthew Meditz I don't know if you saw the latest video, but it might not have even sold for that price. It could have essentially been a fake bid and then sold to the next highest bidder. I think that's actually much more likely. All about inflating those prices.
@shane_MK
@shane_MK 2 года назад
@Matthew Meditz Right. But heritage auctions doesn't have to say if the person doesn't pay for it. They can go down the list of bidders until someone says they want it. They never would update the sold price so that it appears that's the price. As far as I know, the buyer never came forward saying that he or she bought it. So there's no way to say for sure if that price was paid.

I've been saying this type of thing will eventually happen with vinyl records, as someone with a business selling them. Not saying its a good thing. First releases in very high condition of key albums are already getting higher and higher, once they add in some professional grading company, the prices will likely go insane. It's a similar situation to Gaming, but its not as advanced, but now you are getting the articles calling vinyl an investment. We just don't have a professional grading company - yet. And we don't really have special auction companies yet hyping up the rare records. I believe this will come. Mario is iconic, but so are the Beatles.

In other hobbies, a pressing that's not the first will only be valuable if there's a unique aspect that makes that particular variant appealing. Example: Beatles 2nd state "butcher" cover is somewhat collectible because it's got the original cover underneath (Schrodinger's Butcher) and so many people have removed the 2nd state covers that kinda make them a lot more rare than they used to be. With games, I could see if a particular variant had a different ROM than other releases, or some kind of print aspect that would make it "stand out" in a significant way... definitely doesn't seem like proper valuations are going on...

What exactly gives Wata any credibility to grade games? Do they have decades of experience? No. Do they have extensive manufacturing records and reference material to help root out fakes? They don't claim to. Their only source of credibility seems to be being in bed with a large auction house, which only really gives them the appearance of credibility rather than any actual claim of credibility. A pretty beneficial relationship for the auction house too if it helps push the price of items up. Wata and Heritage Auctions mutually beneficial relationship makes me rather uncomfortable.

100%. unfortunately the business they are running is not going after. it will move into new things with time. its a great scam, charge to grade, grading increases value, more items get sent to be graded. it exists in the art world, but its panels, who decide if a work is legit or not. look into the history of Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, to give a sense of this will go for high value items.

I do think it's fair to describe Bonk as the TG16's "Mario" - it was their lead title that got a ton of advertising and was a platformer. It wasn't the same caliber of game (nor does it have the same offerings) but it's not entirely inaccurate to describe it that way.

Point of order For some comic prints, the later printing are worth more..... depends on how many are printed, how popular, and when they came out. Some of the later printings have a way smaller run and are the desired ones.

With that pic of Bonk, shouldn't the logo be off to the side rather then on top?

There's actually a weird trend in comics right now where people are actually wanting later printings of books from the 90s because they're more rare. 2nd prints of first carnage, 3rd or 4th print of first doomsday. Real change from before

A lot of this is due to the insane amount of money printing that's going on and people searching for a store of value given interest rates are so low and yield is so difficult to find

Hey Pat, Just for clarification. When the auction first open up for bidding, they are released for bids via the internet. You put in a price for an internet bid. Once the window for the internet bid closes then it opens up for floor bidding. The internet bids for this particular game ended at $300k. That's why the starting bid was $300k

How do you even decide what to price a graded game at? Especially if there's no other game sold to compare it to

This type of stuff bothers me in the normal collecting scene, you will no longer find Mario games not in box for 10-20$ at the most at garage sales anymore grandma and gramps will think they have something worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars. They don't understand sealed and mint they just see Mario.

Has to be a first time for everything! Prints aside, a sealed copy of a video game is different than an unsealed comic book. You don't see SEAAAAAAAAAALED comic books.

WATA has to have enough info by now for a Consensus Report on some titles. At least Mario 1, Mario 3, Zelda and Punch Out. I also wonder how many sealed and CIB collectors are trying to cash in. I'm sure it's tempting. What do you think Pat and Ian?

This stuff reminds me of all the "alleged" Blockbuster exclusives. Like one time someone said that Hagane was a BB exclusive, then it just got repeated over and over again, with no evidence.

If you really want to invest 600.000 why not buy a classic piece of art? Pretty sure that's not feeding a bubble like overpaying for a 40 year old video game and expecting to get at least the same money back at some point. Or it's all money laundering...

Not defending grading games. In comics, sometimes a 4th or 5th print of something is worth as much or more than the first print. Doomsday's first app is a $30 book first print. A fourth print of the same book is worth $80.

If five people new to this kind of collecting did this, and bidding had started at, say, $50K and ended up at $600K, I would not think this was so insane. Whatever happened to but low and sell high? Even a person is comfortable spending the money, shouldn't they still be interested in maximizing their potential profit?
