(DISCLAIMER: one curse word near the end the video)
What is known in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2, everywhere else it is known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. It certainly lives up to that name, because Nintendo never made another Mario game like this one. Let's find out why!

I think it’s funny that a lot of the now iconic elements of the Mario franchise come from the reskinned Doki Doki Panic (Shy Guys, Bob Ombs, Birdo) rather than the “actual” sequel to Super Mario.

As far as the mainline Mario games go, I consider this one to be the only blemish of the series, with almost every other Mario game being of very high quality. Which shows how consistent the series is in quality, especially compared to Sonic. You have the good kind of hard (like the Donkey Kong Country games), then you have the bad kind of hard, which is this.

Honestly, I think the US was glad we didn't get this first, and the Doki doki panic reskin.

I'm gonna pull a bit of an "Uhm Akchually!" So there is actually lore to Super Mario Bros Lost Levels, but only in the original Japanese release. Mario Lost levels is described as a parallel world of the original Super Mario bros. Basically the story is a retelling of events of the original Super Mario bros, which is likely intended as an excuse story wise to explain away reusing the previous game's engine.

Yeah that makes sense, but you said it yourself: pretty much an excuse story.

Yeah this game is basically the official Little Timmy level pack of the Mario series

It's kinda disappointing that the devs doubled down patience testing instead of new ideas after the Poison Mushroom. Could you imagine an Ice Flower based on the Metorid Ice Beam long before even the Super Mario-kun manga and level design that rewards for maintaining that power up? The castle exterior but fully realized with unique music? Or, hell, maybe mini bosses like a "Super Hammer Bros.".? Now that I said it, basically, Lost Levels just screams "would've could've should've".

World 9 is actually based on the original Famicom SMB1 minus world.

ANYONE mustering the patience to actually see this game through to the end is something I will never fully understand, but will always respect. Also, I just realized that you don't really swear much in your videos, lol

I have never beat this game 😢

I'm sure with enough practice, you can do it! Take note of what each level has to offer so you can be prepared for it once you get there. Jot down any particular trouble spots associated with specific levels to make it easier to remember,, and if you really just want to beat the game right away, the many Warp Zones will come in handy with faster progression. Also, pulling off the Infinite 1-UP trick at the beginning will definitely help matters.

Congratulations on beating that game! I never had the patience for that one personally. I'd give it a go here and there, and eventually say to myself, "You know what? I think I'd rather play something that's actually fun."

Playing the Lost Levels on the SNES is better compared to the Famicom Disk System. And yeah, this game is really difficult and not a fun experience.
