@Google is going to take your data muahahaha If they had used his normal gameplay model (which is around 12, 000 tris), it would not had looked good on the introduction cutscene.
@@nitny20 There is a clear difference in detail when you look at his model in the pause model and in his in-game model. Bowser's model with his wedding outfit has a whopping 33,000 polygons!

As a 3D modeler and animator myself. I find this fascinating. I really enjoy looking into how game devs make their models. It helps me understand new methods of creation. Also as a brief note, at 15:50, you mentioned they would swap out Mario's faces. While I can't prove it, there's a possibility you are correct still. I think they actually used the faces as "Morph Targets". A method of animating where you have a "Destination" model (All the faces) for the main model to "morph" into. Without going too much into detail, they would adjust a slider or value and keyframe out the animation of Mario's face morphing into one of the targets for efficient animation. As they adjust the value/slider, the polygons/verts would slowly move to match the morph target.
To further this. They could also blend morph targets together to create several variations. And never fully use a morph target (Say they only wanted mario's cheeks only HALF blown up. they would use a lower value)
Doom_master1122 I was just thinking that, unless their game engines limitations would prevent that, the simple swapping would still do the job reasonably well
@Jek True, however if they could have used the Morph targets to keyframe out the animations.I'm personally not familiar with any game engine that can natively use that kind of model modifier/script. Most of the time it's just to be able to make very quick and efficient facial animations easily. But like i said, I cant prove thats what they did, They very well could have used swapping.
You've heard of "A+Start's Low Poly", now get read for "B-Select's High Pixel" which counts the amount of pixels and the color palettes of your favorite characters.
3:29 One time, I was playing Super Mario 64, and the camera was really far away, and I was on a CRT, and if I looked really closely, I could see the low poly version of Mario.
He skipped a few, but I think it would've taken too long if he included every possible Mario character (especially all the ones from sport games). I would've liked to see them and perhaps he can do those on the side for the people who are curious. Even with the ones he showed, the video still managed to be 18 minutes which is a bit on the longer side.
NSMB doesn't actually use 3D models in-game. They're actually pre-rendered sprites. Granted, I think he should have had a small section on the sprite based material, but since he focused on the 3D poly models, it's not surprising he didn't mention things like NSMB.

I mean yeah they aren't the same guy except sometimes, but by my count we'd only have to compare.... about 14 games? okay that's kind of a lot. but you'd be forgiven for, say, glossing over the smash bros appearances just briefly to compare them to their counterparts The idea here i think is looking at the differences in polygons and textures over time plus there's a lot of weirdness in the old days, like how the master sword seemed to get a sheikah eye texture on it sometimes
The 3 previous games were mentioned. And seeing as how it's the newest Mario game it should have most definitely been included. I'd believe the "length" argument if it were a 10 minute video, but it's just shy of 20 minutes, so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. How is he supposed to cover this in a follow up video? "Hey look it's Mario from Luigi's Mansion, look how low poly it is, now let's compare it to a 9k+ tri version of Smash 4".
Actually hair is typically animated with particle systems, which means as far as video game characters are concerned there's very little difference between bob ross and patrick steward set on fire.
+The James I guess you're right but i've seen some pretty good real time hair sims so i figured it was only a matter of time before games started using at the very least pre-baked particle hair animations.
Honestly never occurred to me that they would have thought to use a lower polygon model for Mario when the camera is far away way back in '96 but it makes sense. Thing is too, the illusion of it was even less noticeable back then because you'd be playing on a standard CRT television.
Alan Rizkallah yeah, games still do this today, it's called LOD (loss of detail), but with these ultrasharp 4k TV's with stupid amounts of detail and whatnot, it's harder to pull off nowadays
Well I mean, I've known about LOD for a long time but in 1996 when 3D graphics were going through their awkward growing phase, lots of things we take for granted now were just being defined and established. But I had just never thought LOD meshes would have been done for Mario 64 given it's overall simple geometry. Chalk that up to me overestimating the capabilities of the N64 I guess. Plus, like I said, the low resolution of CRT TVs meant no one was the wiser, myself included. :)

the metapod I feel like every smash game (except for the first) has had very solid models, but yeah, melee’s models are incredible for the early 2000’s
Here are my suggestions: Pokémon, Harry Potter, GTA, Lara Croft, The Elder Scrolls. EDIT: Also a technical suggestion - you should maybe convert all model faces to triangles ("triangulate" in Blender) when showing wireframe, there is a lot of quads and even higher order polys on some models and it looks weird.
Really? Why New Super Mario Bros. for DS had a model and others don't? I can't believe that New Super Mario Bros. U was sprites they look so real models!
3:29 this technique is still heavily employed to this day, it’s known as an LOD (level of detail) models. We are a very long time away from no longer needing this in real-time rendering
That was good. Held my attention for 18 minutes. I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't make the Mario model, they've been pretty strict in the past about how they're characters are portrayed.
i mean, when there fully overseeing a project they can be more lax most likely. the problem with wreck-it Ralph is that they didnt know anything that was going on in it and probably wanted bowser to be the best he could be.
I still think that they would at least be overseeing and add some tweaks to the creation of the Mario model. That said, back then SEGA had worked on more 3D projects with they're mascot sonic, then Nintendo had with Mario, so it really is hard to tell for sure.
I think it's safe to say sera did it. They got permission to develope it, and are in charge of composing all of the music, even the remixes, so I think it's safe to assume they made the models. Nintendo probably provides guides on portraying their characters, similar to how a tv show will have a show bible for animators to use as reference.
The same amount of Tris the regular models use. If an "LOD" is available, it'd cycle to it once the camera distance moves farther. If worse comes to worse, camera clipping occurs.

There are thousands of quads in my pointer finger's nail alone. There's billions of tris on my whole right hand, and all of the *trillions* of tris on my leg bend beautifully, all the hair has perfect rose-gold shaders, too. There are duodecillions of tris on me. Now how do I turn on my wire frame?
HiiragiTia In the future when computers get WAY more advanced, someone should actually invent a machine that scans someones body and turns the "polygons" on your skin into actuall polygons in a 3d program, 'cause 1. It'd be alot easier to model, and 2. It'd look REALLY realistic!
If they make a hybrid Mario game where he drives around in a Kart and gets out to explore other areas, then yeah, in THAT case. Heh, it'd be like the GTA of Mario games :D

+Jonathan Chan More polygons doesen't always mean better model. Sure, the one from Sega was maby the best one. Today, you can do increadibly much with bumpmapping, texturing and lightning etc. For a todays game it is recomended to use a poly count of around 15k to 30k per model. You can do it with less but if you are programming a game with detailed models unlike mario (for example more like Link from Nintendo or Models from The Witcher 3 etc.) it is recomended to use some more polygons to visualize more details. For example, the model Ryse: SOn of Rome has around 150k polygons and the model from Infamous Second Son around 120k polygons. If the games allows it, you can go even higher (ridiculous higher) and make it like Star Citizen with its Cruiser Spaceship which is made of 7 million polygons. O_o Star Citizen is basicly the game which is known for an unreal high polygon cound.
You definitely should do a video of Link's model throughout time, because now I'm curious about how many Tri's his Ocarina of Time model has compared to Mario's model in Super Mario 64.
May you show the models of the characters in the Smash Bros series on the 3DS version so we can see how much effort they placed on that game as well please?

Hat has more detail.
Yeah, they also missed (or maybe it was intentional for the sake of not making the video overly long) Strikers, Tennis, Golf, the rest of the Parties, etc
