Tool Assisted Speedrun
Note: Skip the X-raying segment at the start of the run, it is multiple minutes long.
This is an improvement by about 25 seconds to the old Glitched TAS I have on my channel. This run uses extreme glitches to skip most of the game, the final time is still 00:12 at the end of the game though, and the amount of collected items is 6%.
Tool Assisted - these games are played using a emulator at super slow speeds and save states. The goal is to provide entertainment by showing off game glitches and beating the game as fast as possible.

It is a necessary part of the setup to die in that green brinstar room to skip Mother Brain, and you are not allowed to cross any big rooms after doing so, which is why I have to use the two saves to transport between the two areas.

Well obsoleted is the term that is used for beaten movies on the site on which I publish all my runs, so I used it here as well.

Well you have to move like that, that's how the glitch works. You activate the X-ray while crouching, you then start to turn around and before you turn all the way you release the X-ray button. This forces you to stand up even though you are stuck in the wall, and when crouching you rise a bit, and then you repeat.

I had an input macro so I made the entire climb in less time than it takes to watch in realtime, as you can just use the turbo button :P

@Pleasesnowplz I think it has to do with the camera not lining up properly during the door transition leading to the elevator. I think due to this the game expects the camera to be slightly lower down, and when it updates graphics (like when opening doors or scrolling vertically) it puts them relatively to where it thinks the camera is. The same happens after MB skip but horizontally (since it was a horizontal transition that took place here).

Yes, the plan was to put it very late in the game, since it's a part of finding out about the hidden tweak I've put into it. This way the player is forced to play the entire game twice in order to experience SJF. You won't find out about it without the X-Ray, no way.

The X-ray can force you into a standing position, so you can crouch again and gain some height. Without it you'd just get stuck. Anyway I don't really know the technical workings of the glitch, but when you are out of bounds you can run in to "blocks" that trigger door transitions, so you just need to find one that triggers the transition to the elevator.

More or less. Visiting the firefly room, and the intro screen is the reason that there is a door of screen in MB's room. And you can't visit other big rooms in between, so I have to die and load the tourian save in order to avoid that.

Yeah, it took 3-4 weeks of work at least (and a lot of it was basically already worked out, so it's about 20% of the run that took 90% of the time to do).

Frame advance, that is, I have a button which advances the game by one frame at a time, so I can chose exactly what input to have for every frame.

@YewTo0b You need to get into that room and die there for the MB skip to work. Having recently been in that room leaves some junk in the games memory, and creates the off-screen door block I touch in MB's room to get through to the next room. I don't know the exact technical workings of it, I wasn't the one who figured the skip out.

The timer is never triggered to appear as this happens during the MB death sequence, so yeah I could stand around forever and nothing would happen.

OK, I gotta know... what was the point of loading that savegame at the beginning, dying, then reloading your savegame in Tourian? I can't find any information on any glitches relating to savegames anywhere, and I can't actually determine any specific way in which that benefited you...

Well, there goes my childhood. I used to pride myself in being the fastest one to get out of the long platforming area after getting the missiles and morph ball in my family, but NOOOO, you had to go and beat the game faster than I could even get the bombs. Jerk >:( Seriously though, very entertaining watch. The only thing I want to know is WHY the xray glitch works. I found it hilarious the first lap, totally unexpected, but how does going through the roof so many times just shatter the game?

You can for some reason only use X-ray while crouching if you went into crouching position yourself. Therefore if you get stuck in a wall and forced into a crouch you can't do the climb. This makes getting stuck more tricky in a unassisted run, as you have to have even more precision. I can't really explain how to do it though.

It's not too hard to do, but still annoying to do it for a long stretch. Basically when you are inside a wall and stuck in crouching position you turn on the X-ray, start to turn around and instantly let go of the X-ray. If you time it right samus will stand up again, and if you crouch she will rise a few pixels.

I don't actually know why the X-ray climb works. The thing is that it forces you to stand up if you start turning around and during the turnaround animation you stop using the X-ray, but I don't really know why the game does that. Going up for so long causes you to eventually reappear at the bottom of the room, or a copy of it anyway, if I recall correctly. It doesn't really fuck the game up though, besides the graphic displacement.

At the end, you jumped to the ship's hatch.. wouldn't it been faster to jump to the very edge and start arm-pumping towards the hatch? Regardless, really awesome job.

It's the get stuck in the wall thing that's complicated. I've tried to get stuck in a door like that without any success at all. I always spawn too far way from the door. And of my experience x-ray can't be used in when crouching, at least I couldn't when I tried it testing my hack. But evidentically it can, it's probably just me. Too bad the 2k2 forum is down at the moment.

If I did not die in that room before going in to motherbrains room then that door I enter in the middle of nothing in her room would not have been there.

You don't need to remove it completely from the game, you could just place it in some unreachable place, or right at the end.

If this is about the X-ray glitch I'd rather like to find out how to remove it from the game since I'm hacking it right now and would like to prevent glitchy sequence breaking like this. Only my own SB.s should work =)

I didn't. They where found by a guy who knows very much about the inner workings of Super Metroid (more than anyone else in the world, probably). And they where found deliberately, not randomly.
