A few days ago during random seed runs, I died on Phantoon with 5:34 on the clock; by far the most time I had accrued in time attack. I decided to try some set seed runs to see what I could do with the route, and also to give myself some practice at surviving at room 50+. I quickly learned how fragile the "line" was; small differences in health would result in getting different rooms. It was quite fortunate I found this line in the first place; every deviation over the first 44 rooms was either slightly or significantly worse than my original line. Optimally I can get 7:30+ on the clock after KQK.
I opted to avoid Phantoon room 45, but runs were still dying before room 70. I eventually found a yolo spark into room 51 gave me a path to varia at room 55 followed by a good run of rooms, and later on found a path to plasma at room 88. My next challenge was Mother Brain, where the penalty and lost of health was costing me runs. In this run I invested in picking up out-of-the-way missile packs, avoided the penalty, and blew past the 100 room mark to an even 120 rooms.
Set seed is not the same experience as random seed. It does require good memory and intuition to stay on my line, and there's still several rooms with a low margin of error, but knowing what is coming is a lot easier than not knowing. Also it must be said, even though 120 rooms tops the arcade time attack set seed leaderboard at this time, it's nowhere close to the 300+ room count topping the more competitive random seed leaderboard, so I would not consider this a set seed world record.
