Hi! I am a Super Metroid speedrunner. You can find me on Twitch: www.twitch.tv/idlechild/about
I am considering starting up a beginner-friendly Super Metroid Randomizer Tournament. If you'd like to know more, join the discord: discord.gg/MXsNUQVZ
ty! I'd forgotten how clutch this fight was XD For the longest time I exclusively hit MB with angle up shots (in any category) and that led to me optimizing being on the ground more with lower jumps. This strategy was helpful for low ice. Now I also try shooting MB horizontally in the air, but for low ice I should return to that angle-up-shots-only mode because being on the ground is key for survival in this fight.
Never thought about playing Metroid without drops, but it definitely forces you to do things a certain way. Very interesting, and congrats on the record!
As you're probably aware, when you kill enemies in Super Metroid, most of them drop health or ammo. In the No Drops category, we add a restriction that you cannot collect any drops in the game. PDRK just refers to the boss order (Phantoon, Draygon, Ridley, Kraid). I've been trying out different boss orders; I'm currently working on PKDR but may switch to PKRD or PRKD in the future. I believe PRKD is the most optimal but also the most difficult, unless I start going out of my way to collect more energy tanks (at least those are allowed thankfully!) Refilling at the ship or at recharge stations is also allowed.
I finished my first run today. I had to check yours while doing mine to see how y'all crossed the quicksand under Botwoon E-tank... I completely forgot about that while routing😂 2:08:xx with 2 deaths, 2 big resets and a really bad route. I'll give it a couple attempts this week and see how far I can go.
If you accidentally warp to Parlor, opening the door requires an angled shot for some reason. Then because the slope blocks are "springy" as you can see there, you generally need to downgrab the doorframe once it's open to get through.
There's an easy backup warp you can do from Terminator too. Stand on the first plant on the floor, biased toward the left side. Charge up the endgame spacetime shot and fire it up-left. As soon as the beam is fired, start holding left. You'll land in Green Pirate Shaft and need to jump over Terminator Etank on your way back to the ship. It loses around 20 seconds vs the tube-side warp.
Very informative video. Not even interested in speedrunning super metroid myself, it's just really interesting learning the inner mechanics & workings of this classic game. and it helps put into context the amount of effort required to get really good at running it.
For context, the No Drops category prohibits collecting any drops from enemies, of any sort. No glitches are allowed. There is a mod that can be used to make it easier to detect when you've picked something up by accident.
I mapped dash to L, which means I don't have angle down mapped to anything. This is why most of the time when I'm arm pumping, you only see Samus' arm go between neutral and angle up. n00b bridge is an exception where I am using the dpad to angle down (holding down-right) the whole time so arm pumping goes between angle up and angle down. In both cases, this is less efficient than if I had both angle down and angle up mapped; it's better if Samus is alternating among neutral, angle down and angle up. However it's just easier on my hands/grip if I avoid putting dash on a face button.
Great tutorial and very well explained. I don't have moonwalk but I was able to feel out the initial jump through the left portal and knowing what inputs to press/hold and when was extremely valuable - thank you!
lol yeah, hardly anyone else wants to do it tbh i don't mind the category and plan to return in the future. i'm considering changing the route so i can pick up maridia power bombs. it's out of the way, but farming croc is so slow it might be worth it.
Yes. You can play the practice rom on snes9x (choose the version without savestates since you can use the snes9x for savestates instead). Use the practice rom to learn the timing. Then switch the normal rom and you can use the same timing and get short charges in the original Super Metroid game.
GOOD☆ Nice to meet you! I enjoyed watching it far from Japan(^0^). I run a channel to let people all over the world know about Japanese retro games!if you like! It's okay if you don't understand Japanese because there are many gameplay videos! I’d be happy if you could comment and Channel subscribe!I would be happy if I could grow up together!
