My dad went to Walmart on Christmas knowing that I wanted a "Nintendo." What I wanted was a 64, what I got was this little guy here. I was pretty sad until I started playing Yoshi's Island. I loved this console and played on it for years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Gaming Historian.
Kenny Mccormick Giving That 1.. The Internet Connectivity Of Both Wii And Ds Is Being Shut Off.. Its a Good Buy.. And 2.. .Your Kenny.. Can You Even Afford A Wii?
Fun fact: those controllers you got are regular-SNES controllers. The controller bundled with the SNES 2 (SNS-101) have the Nintendo embossed into the plastic rather than printed onto
Didn’t realize the gaming historian has been around this long. Nintendo did end up making new versions of the Wii in the form of the version without GameCube playback, and the Wii mini, and more recently there’s been revisions of the Switch as well. Interesting seeing these compared in the grand scheme of things.
What is ironic about all of this is that in 2009 no one knew the value of these, whereas in 2019 the SNES Jr. is coveted as the best of the three-styles of SNES (SNES Multi-Chip, SNES 1-Chip, SNES Jr 1-Chip) as having the absolute best picture quality (paired with an RGB mod) and having the best controllers paired with them. Insane how things change over time. Love my SNES Jr. and wouldn't trade it for anything.
It's just too bad that the first redesigned Nintendo console in over a decade turned out to be the Wii Mini, which was almost completely unnecessary. The Wii Mini retailed for $99 and by the time it was released, you could easily find a regular Wii for the same price, if not somewhat cheaper and still have all the features that were removed such as WiFi capabilities (which are unfortunately gone now), the Gamecube backwards compatibility as well as Gamecube controller ports.
RageUnchained Well, I think I'd beg to differ on _that_ one. Despite the rough way Nintendo allowed it's users to play their old Wii games on their Wii Us, it still upscaled them quite well. Apart from that, the Wii U has sported some great games that, although look suspiciously similar in terms of graphics that we're all too familiar with from last gen; are still a significant enough leap from the original Wii's capabilities, especially due to the fact that the Wii U is Nintendo's first HD console. Now, while I would also go as far to say that Nintendo could've gone further with their graphical update, they've still done some wondrous things with what they've got and, as silly as it sounds, I often find myself distracted by how _fun_ their more recent games have been and I barely even think about Nintendo's graphics engines. :)
RageUnchained It's a next-gen console with better graphics, a completely different set of games, and a wildly different controller meant to give a unique gaming experience. If you decide to try your hand with that argument, you won't go far.
I was a Genesis junkie during the 16 bit era, but later got a Super NES and it turned out to be this redesigned one. A couple of years later, I gave it and all my games to a kid at my church. Just a couple of years back though, I got an SNES on ebay and it was the original design. Still have it!
@@CasperTheRestless These are the actions that keep us up at night. i gave away most of my N64 games and an expansion pack when i sold my old system in like middle school. i got 30 bucks for it then and I've since bought the whole system again and an expansion pack that cost 50 alone. 😓
Geez. I was born in Dec. '78 and the SNES was the first console I saved up for and bought myself, probably around '91-'92. I had no idea the SNES 2 was even a thing. I love this channel!
My Dad purchased this in 1999 at a yard sale with a complete bundle of games. I was 5 years old and had the 64 at the time. I was ecstatic at the idea of switching it up whenever I got bored. Good times. :')
I agree. My family has had NES since Xmas of '85 and I still have no issues with the console/controllers or the games we own. Just as well my Gamecube still runs like it did day 1 where my PS3 has started to slow down due to RAM restrictions
I found an SNES 101 hidden on a storage shelf in late 1999 when I worked in the electronics section at Walmart. I didn't know the redesign existed, but I bought it as my original SNES had a broken part. My SNES 101 still works perfectly in 2022. When I started woodworking, I built gaming towers for my consoles and put little blocks at the front of the SNES 101's slot so I couldn't accidentally pull it off the tower during normal gameplay, something that had happened a lot. It's easily my lightest console.
By the way, all, I was talking about the top loading Wii Mini. Not the Wii U. I actually enjoyed mine. Call of Duty and Minecraft on a portable screen? Yes, please!
The last question in the video has been answered as I'm sure you know, the Wii was redesigned without the Gamecube playability and most recently the Wii Mini was a smaller version
I have a snes mini and a newer model 1. I noticed that the composite video i was getting from the mini looked noticeably better than I remembered from my original console. The newer model 1 actually has the same hardware inside but S-video and RGB are left intact. The mini can output gorgeous RGB/S-video with a simple mod.
Reviews on video systems are my favorite. I'd love to see 15-20 minute reviews on every video game system that existed. Or a long review on the entire history of video games starting with the Magnavox Odyssey and working all the way up to present time. That would be like a full movie.
I have the SNES 2. By the time I got it, I already had the N64. But my grandpa owned the original SNES since launch, and I enjoyed that so much, I even got a couple of my own games for it (most important of which was the Super Game Boy). So it was definately worthwhile for me to get me my own SNES when the SNES 2 came out, especially since I'd also be getting my own copy of Yoshi's Island. I still own it, and in fact I still play it today.
I came to watch this again after I just bought a Snes 2 cheap. The store I bought it from claimed it was broken and they couldn't get it to work at all. It was cosmetically perfect so I bought it with no cables or controllers for 20. Opened it up, checked the joints on the video port and tested it. Works perfect now, except for the fact that it is unmodded Snes 2 but I will be fixing that shortly. All in all it's a great little system that didn't get the respect it deserved.
This was my first major purchase as a kid. I remember I got it right when it was new just after my 7th birthday. I had been desperately wanting yoshi's island and all I had access to up to this point were my neighbor's nes and genesis. For a kid that had saved up all year for it, the snes 2 was perfect at $99 even if it didn't have s video or rf.
Its interesting looking back at this video, especially the end since you mentioned that the N64 and GameCube never got a re-design. You also questioned whether we would see the Wii get re-designed. Crazy foreshadowing given that the Wii did eventually get a re-design in the form of the Wii Mini.
It was a subtle redesign, but a significant one. The console was redesigned to sit horizontally rather than vertically. The Wii Family Edition and original Wii were even sold under different sku numbers. Set one next to the other, it's apparent which is which.
The Gamecube did get a re-design, though you couldn't tell by the look of the console. They removed the digital A/V port on the later units that retailed for $99.
ive recently discovered your channel, decided to venture back to the beginning to see how you've evolved, and I have to say I am pleasantly pleased. Thank you for the work and time you put into these videos. I greatly appreciate and enjoy the content you create.
@@mocacola But it was successful at the time, And there were no other consoles to redesign. I think they mean more recent when theres more to redesign, So they do they do the more successful consoles. Look at the DS, And all of its versions. :)
Nes, nes top loader Snes, snes mini Gameboy, gameboy pocket Gba, gba sp/micro Ds, ds lite, dsi Wii, Wii mini 3ds, 3ds xl, 2ds, new 3ds, new 3ds xl, new 2ds xl Switch, switch lite Nintendo sure went crazy with ds/3ds remodels
Great information! I really enjoyed looking at this console because I had no idea that it existed. I knew about the Snes because my neighbor had one but an Snes 2 is new to me! Awesome video yet again!
I think according to Shigeru Miyamoto's basement, the Famicom and Super Famicom were discontinued on April 30th, 2002 and not September 25th, 2003, and the Nintendo 64 was also discontinued on the same day as Famicom and Super Famicom in Japan
my SNES 2 used to freeze if you barely touched it. I put tape under the dust blocking doors on the cart port which made it tighter and games didn't freeze. but I was still annoyed that it ever had that prob in the 1st place
I remember as a kid this was being sold alongside the N64 when I went to scout out games consoles (back in those days they let us play the consoles at whitegoods stores) and my Mum pointed out I might want this instead as it was cheaper; I quickly replied since I was rather knowledge on the subject that it's the previous generation console and it's unlikely I'll be able to find very many games for it still being sold. She quickly replied with a defeated "oh". TBH I think I would of been as happy with this console as I was with the N64 since I already enjoyed side scrollers as well as RPGs on PC and the SNES had all the best side scrollers and RPGs at that time, better than the ones on PC. But, my concern was trying to get my hands on the SNES games; I lived in a Country where basically, good luck trying to buy games for discontinued systems, because they wouldn't sell them in retail anymore and within 2 years of the N64 coming out, rental stores got rid of their entire SNES library. I remember seeing them on the shelf alongside SEGA, Sony Playstation and N64 games, then they were all gone by 1998.
most people said and still say "how dumb of Nintendo to make cartridges for n64" well n64 games sell for good money now hardly any ps1 games are worth much
This is a horrible arguement. this just means that it's HARDER to get a n64 cartridge, while it would be dirt cheap to get ps games. The only proof here is that it sucks to sell ps1 games.
I don't know if anyone commented on this, as I'm late to the game. However, there was a serious flaw with the SNES 2. Because there was no eject button, the ROM cart had to be easier to discharge from the reader, which meant that it didn't fit in nearly as snug as the SNES 1. The major issue with this was that the game might turn off in mid-playing if you jostled the console (picked up, etc). If it was a game with a memory chip for saving data, this would mean that there would be a high chance of data loss, which happened twice to me, making my experience with this system very unhappy.
Yeah the AV cables (the red, yellow & white ones) work so much better. At least in my experience anyway. I had an RF Adapter that I used a PlayStation 2 & Nintendo GameCube with because my TV doesn't have a video input. The problem is that I would sometimes get that static buzzing noise while trying to play games or watch DVDs (in PlayStation 2's case). In late 2005 or early 2006, my sister gave me her old DVD Player which came with an RF Modulator box. I just hook the AV cables for whatever console I'm using or the DVD Player into the Modulator & well.... No annoying static buzzing noise anymore. I use that RF Modulator with Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 & Sega Genesis now too. No problems whatsoever.
@@tiberiusbrain My parents bought the N64 because of the catridge format. Compared to early CD's the N64 cartridges were pretty much indestructible. The N64 itself was also very heavy and durable and something you wouldn't just be able to pull the shelf with a yank on the controller. I do think it's a big downside of the Switch. Not just the tiny cards but the console itself is very delicate and not really suited to the abuse children will put it under.
People are on here talking about the Wii Mini, but forgetting that the Mini was actually the Wii's second revision. In between Nintendo put out a version without GameCube support.
No more redesigned consoles...and just years after this video was made, we got the 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, 2DS, 2DS XL, New 3DS XL, and finally the New 2DS XL. And let's not forget the Game Boy Advance SP (which he seems to have ignored) and just recently, the Switch Lite
Anthony B Well if you want to get technical the Wii is a remake! How is that when they don't even share the same controllers? Well I will not dive into it but both systems share a very similar architecture .
You don't understand. I mean a GameCube... Not a Wii. The Wii plays Wii games. I want a GameCube that only plays GameCube games. That's what a remake is......
This video was made in 2009, so it's not his fault, but Nintendo did make another slim system: the Wii mini. Still one of the worst thing Nintendo made. It has no use. It had no WiFi, and the Wii U had been out for a while.
The Wii has such horrible wifi, removing it was almost s blessing. A $20 usb network adapter does wonders over the original Wii wifi controller. Of course, you have to then plug it in with cat5, or use a WiFi bridge, but if anything, Nintendo should have updated the Wii to support proper 802.11g or perhaps the newly released 802.11n.
AIO inc. Oh, and 2 more things for you: 1. The Sony PS2 had a far longer life span than anything else really. You should do a video on it. 2. Congrats on successfully pulling off the James Rolfe look! P.S. I feel like there should be grand, suspenseful, dramatic music playing as I type 'EarthBound Gaming Historian' in...
LOL, just saw this old video and your premonition was right there was a new Wii. It was funny to see you this young and that you sound the same, always enjoyable
My brother and I got this model as a joint gift from our parents on his birthday. Had a lot of good times on this console. I didn't even realize the original SNES had an eject button since I never owned one. That's actually a nice feature, but not necessary. I'm guessing the SNES 2 was cheaper than the original and that's why we got that one.
Man in the years since this video is made those SNES Juniors have went up so much. Bought one last year on eBay with two aftermarket controllers and one packing game and an aftermarket AV cable and aftermarket power I actually paid more for it than it costed when it came out I paid 125$
YinDragon665 The Wii U was/is kinda more of a half-successor to the Wii instead of a remake as the S/NES 2 were. Sony and Microsoft definitely made quite a few remakes of their consoles but they usually came with a higher price tag than the system they replaced since they commonly added or refined features in the original models.
+GameCube Joey it's a JVC video standard that uses a DIN plug with two signals (luma and chroma) so the quality is much better than composite video but not quite as good as RGB / component video.
The New-Style Super NES was designed by Lance Barr, who previously designed the North American versions of the NES, and Super NES, as well as the redesigned NES. Released at a lower price point, Nintendo marketed it as an entry-level gamer's system for customers who were on a budget and who may have been put off by the higher price of other more modern systems such as the Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and PlayStation. Nintendo marketed the system in North America simply as the "Super Nintendo Entertainment System", just as the company had done the original SNS-001 model. It was released in North America on October 20, 1997 and retailed for US$99.95. The system was available as a stand-alone package or in a variety of bundles, each including one pack-in game such as: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Target exclusive) Kirby Super Star (Target exclusive) Tetris Attack (Toys "R" Us exclusive)
More time as has passed between when this video was uploaded and now, than between when this video was uploaded and Nintendo ended production of the SNES.
+awesomeferret There was also the Wii model 2, released before this video was made (08, if i remember correctly?) so there's that, but it had no coverage and I only remember it cause my buddy bragged about getting it, and said it was better than my red Wii, until he soon realized his couldn't play GC games and i had the last laugh.
10 years later :) I only realized cause of the "wii" model. Dont understand me wrong, The wii is great console(i played it a Week ago) but a bit outdated.
Since this video was made there has been a few Nintendo re-designs. Such as the wii mini and the infamous switch lite (However to switch lite isn’t technically a home console but it was a re-design of a home console hybrid
I was a Sega kid growing up but I sure did appreciate how awesome SNES was/is. My brother had the SNES/Gameboy and I had the Genesis/Game Gear. Gaming was so much simpler back then: it was all about fun-factor and both console's respective libraries were rich in variety. Those were the days, man.
