That moment where the contestant grabs the toaster from Bert's hands going "Gimme that, I can fix it!" using the roll of tape someone threw earlier...priceless, just priceless.
What's hilarious is that a roll of tape was conveniently behind Bert's podium. They started doing this ever since Bert showed his tendency to giving away clues and/or puzzles. From then on, the producers always threatened (and actually did on a couple of times) tape Bert's mouth shut.
Oh way to go, Bert! That was worth waiting for! Thank you for sharing this. What made it funnier was Pat offering to fix it, like Schneider on "One Day at a Time"
On the final episode, Betty White rips up the check and tries to tear the toaster apart. Bert tells her to just throw it. She has to throw it twice to break it, as the replacement toaster had apparently been "Bert-proofed." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-28eeruMnRUY.html
Oh man, this is still my favorite game show of all time. Bert Convy was a terrific host and really made the game fun. Today, we get smug, third-rate comedians hosting, and way too much time spent on contestants doing their very best to annoy the audience. Still, I wouldn't want SP to be brought back. It's not the same without Bert.
I've always thought Super Password wasn't just about the game, but about the comedic spontaneity. Random things happen and the people have a comedic response to it. In Allen Ludden's day, it was just "Oh, something happened. Let's just move on." For SP, it's more like "Oh, something happened. Haha. Wild snarky response. Haha."
They made a stronger magic toaster, and on the final episode, Betty White had to throw it twice to destroy it. Apparently, the second one was "Bert-proofed."
Poor Bert. He's got to be the most disrespected game show host I've ever seen. They throw tape at him so he doesn't give away the puzzle, they make fun of him when he breaks the props... it's so sad, and yet, so hilarious. XD
After the first toaster was broken, the production company decided to have a second toaster ready. After Bert broke the second one, another was made, after he broke that one, there was another one, and Tom has that at home today! Tom Hutcheson
I noticed that after Edie gave away the word, Bert mentioned they would throw it out, little did he know that he would do it literally to the toaster. Man, what a day.
I'm literally watching this episode on buzzer Network right now and it turns out they have a second magic toaster which means there's a mold for this device which begs the question who came up with the mold for this seemingly single purpose item? I mean one has to assume that the magic toaster was only created for the cashword I can't picture something like this being sold in retail
He just lightly threw it, but with the height he tossed it from, could it have been in pieces any further? Why wasn't this show on any game show blooper show? This is one of the funniest game show moments I've ever seen. If there's another blooper show, maybe this should be marked in, "Oh, just destroy it!" parts. No, jk. But, it has to be a blooper reel! Come on!
Edie could have covered her tracks by turning what she said into "evaluate." Wouldn't have been a good clue, but it wouldn't have been the answer either!
Pat Harrington may have played a building superintendent for nine years on television, but there was NO WAY he could have fixed the Magic Toaster (they probably built a new one, which was destroyed by Betty White three years later.)
