I think it was a fair thing to do - he said it unintentionally but they killed the puzzle because they didn't want to steer the opponent the wrong way by letting his "joke guess" go without an answer.
The infuriating thing about this is that Marty was GONNA say "Joan Crawford" (he started to say it), and I don't know -- maybe he thought it would be too gay or something? Or too "in"? So then he says "football" which every knows is not the answer. And THEN he says Crawford. Grrrrrrrr. :-) BTW, I never paid attention to how CUTE Marty is.
