Super Password Bonus Round. Here the celeb Margie is giving the clues to a contestant. She is playing for a chance to win $55,000 (legally) which is the highest jackpot awarded. Watch their performance.
It is Janis Paige, who played the waitress that Archie Bunker almost had an affair with on "All In The Family" in 1976 and 1979, and was getting ready to play hospital administrator Catherine Hackett on the last season of "Trapper John, M.D." when this episode came out in 1985.
The biggest flaw with the progressive Super Password jackpot was you kind of get rewarded for failure. If it starts at $5000 and you win it 3 times in a row you end up with $15000. But if you get 9 out of 10 twice and then win the 3rd time you end up with $16800.
She was also Archie Bunker's 'other woman' on "All In The Family", and she played hospital administrator Catherine Hackett on "Trapper John, M.D." back when this episode aired in 1986.
There was no limit to the jackpot on Super Password, although the display could only hold five digits. It is curious to see what they would have done if the jackpot ever reached $100,000 (or more).
Any time someone suggests that an 80s game show was faked, they just show how igorant they are. There is NO WAY that any game show was rigged after the Quiz Show scandals of the 60s. Especially this. The risks FAR outweighed any gain. Why fake this? Eventually SOMONE was going to win the super jackpot. So why would they pick her?
@knickknack07 I think the reason for that is because most people misinterpret Uranium not to be a metal, only because they expect it to be a liquid (when being enriched for nuclear weapons). I can't think of any metal that starts with a U. So I agree with you completely. Just most people don't see it as a metal.
Is this contestant the future Marjorie Coster-Praytor that I see here, I looked that up based on your info and came up with both her last name and her other credits here: www.imdb.com/name/nm0182658/ What a big win ($55,000 plus the $4.500 she won during the regular game, $59,500 total in one game!!!) congratulations to her on both that and her future careers after this episode aired
Bert's clues to Marble: crystal / limestone / glass / stone / table / ball / shoot / game / round / toy / hard / rock / shining Note to us: Janis said it about MARBLE because that's while Janis was little (ages 2+). And it's a record-breaking cash win at stake, that's most expensive!
Is this contestant the future Marjorie Coster-Praytor that I see here??? I looked it up based on the info @grievousangel09 had on her being a property master on Friends and came up with both her last name and her other credits here: www.imdb.com/name/nm0182658/ What a big win ($55,000 plus the $4.500 she won during the regular game, $59,500 total in one game!!!), congratulations to her on both that and her future careers after this episode aired!!!
No disrespect to the late, great Allen Ludden, but Bert Convy was the better “Password” host as far as the bonus round is concerned. I really didn’t care for Allen practically shouting each letter during “Alphabetics; Bert almost whispering the letters, but still conveying them to the team is much, much less distracting.
graperonto Janis Paige she played Auntie V on eight is enough tv show and she has a television and film career before that but she is not a well known celebrity
All I can say is "WHAT THE WHAT?!?!?!"; $55,000 (Bonus Round Jackpot) plus $4,500 (contestant's money winnings in the main game) equals $59,500 (GRAND TOTAL)!!!
Ok I've never seen this game before so can anyone explain to me how the jackpot was this big. Did the jackpot increase by $5000 for every time it wasn't won?
THe day before this, Carl was playing for $50K with Janis. He got the word Frog after Janis said pass. He then said the word Frog right after the buzzer, after getting all the other passwords. The rule is that you don't get credit for a guessed password in Super Password's end game after the celeb says Pass. You have to go back and get the passed word. In Summer 1985, they awarded a $20K win when the last word "Inn" was guessed clearly after the buzzer, but not for the Frog incident.
And out of curiosity, why WOULDN'T you say uranium? What other metal do you know that starts with a U? The fact that this woman is a far better player than you does not mean it was rigged. It just means that you are not good at Password.
Unfortunately, it was by the infamous Patrick Quinn (Kari Ketchum) who conned himself out of $55,000 when Alaskan viewers turned him in. Any videos about the infamous male contestant?
If you look down at Janice's left hand, she's almost making a gesture of shooting marbles. I'm guessing that if that had been visible by the contestant, it would have been illegal?
You know, if this was The 10/20/35/50/$100,000 Pyramid she would've gotten zapped for it, as Dick Clark strictly states every time they go to the winner's circle "don't use your hands, give only a list".
That episode I do remember very well that's right that episode I remember very well I watched that lady win that 55 grand basically that made her total at that point 59,500 and I can tell you this much right now if that would have been me I would have lost my social security benefits and there would have been nothing I could have done about it but this lady she had to end up owing the IRS 30% of that 45 or whatever but what I'm trying to say is she ended up having 30% taken out in taxes the state tax the federal tax and the income tax so basically she was somewhere between 35 and $40,000 but a time it was all said and done
If this round had been lost, I know the jackpot would have gone to $60,000... was there an upper limit for how far the jackpot could go... I know Password Plus had a $50,000 maximum
You know, for the alleged hand gesture on "shoot" as the clue for "Marble/Marbles" if this was The 10/20/25/50/$100,000 Pyramid Janis Paige probably would've gotten zapped for it, as Dick Clark strictly states every time they go to the winner's circle "don't use your hands, give only a list".
0:10 Bert Convy - "I keep thinking of Redd Foxx 'Oh, It's The Big One' " 1:47 The winning moment - Bert Convy - "YES!!!" 2:27 Bert Convy - "I got a heart attack on that one huh". In a way Bert Convy ALMOST HAD "The Big One", much like Fred Sanford (played by Redd Foxx in the hit NBC series "Sanford & Son") used to say. RIP to a class act and great host like Bert Convy, I also liked him on his trademark game show "Tattletales" on CBS in both of its runs (1974-1977 and also 1982-1984)
RIP: JANIS PAIGE. SHE PASSED AWAY YESTERDAY AT THE AGE OF 101. HERE IS HER MEMORABLE APPEARANCE ON: SUPER PASSWORD. WHICH RESULTED IN A $55,000 WIN. Kenneth Huang. 6/04/24.
