He said that no one wanted the 3DS version, yet it outsold the Wii U version by quite the marging, more than enough than to simply say that "The Wii U players only bought it because it came out first." I'm sure plenty of people only own the 3DS version as well, showing that the 3DS was wanted as well, because of portability.

I'm sure a lot of people enjoy the portability, but it's clearly the inferior version of the game. I'm not surprised that it sold more, because Nintendo completely threw the Wii U version under the bus for more sales. People ended up buying both versions instead of just buying the Wii U version, some people bought the 3DS version and never decided to follow up with the Wii U version, and I'm sure a majority of people just played it on 3DS. Most people who got the 3DS version just settled for the worst version because it came out earlier and never followed up on buying the real game.

It would be interesting to see what the sales would have been like had they released them both side by side, but I think Nintendo had already given up on the Wii U at this point and just pushed the 3DS to get the most software sales.

HyperCharge kinda sucked when I couldn't afford a Wii U so I just got the 3DS version, but I'm glad to hear the better one didn't have much content either lmao

I mean, I was like 6 years old when Melee came out, so I never really dived into the competitive scene at that age. I might have gone into playing it more competitively if I was super into the game back in the day, but I never really had a lot of friends who pushed me to play better. Going back to the game as a adult really got me to understand how much more fun Melee is compared to Brawl and Smash 4. Even with the footage I recorded, it was fun to just pop into training mode and practice a couple of combos with Marth and Falco and see what I could pull off. I'm mostly talking about Smash 4 specifically in the video, but it also applies to Melee too. It was probably more exciting to play the game competitively in the past, since the meta was constantly changing and being improved, but now everything's already been solved, and nothing is really evolving anymore. The top tier characters in the game dominate the entire game with half of the roster not even being viable options. It's not even that half the roster are unpopular choices, they're just objectively shit characters when you incorporate all of the technical stuff going on in the background. The game has such an absurd game balance that playing the top tier characters is pretty much required now, with only a few great players being able to play some of the lower tiered characters like Ganondorf. I think the biggest turn off for me personally is how much tech is required to even play at a competitive level. Super Smash Bros Melee is easy to learn, but it's incredibly hard to master in an almost obnoxious way. Just the concept of L-Canceling my moves makes me never want to jump into the game at a competitive level, but I would basically have to master it in order to even be on par with everyone else. It cuts your landing animations in half, which exponentially increasing your combo potential, making it an absolute required skill to master. I would compare this to having to learn 1-frame links in Street Fighter 4, which I also hate with the fucking passion. It takes a lot of technical skill to be able to pull 1-frame links off, but it shouldn't be required to pull off an extremely basic 5 punch combo. A lot of the technical aspects of Super Smash Bros Melee are needlessly complicated for how simple the game actually is, but the only reason it's like that is because it was never intended to be played at a competitive level. Like I said in the video, the main mechanic of Super Smash Bros is attacking, blocking, or grabbing, which is the mind game that drives the meta. It's an extremely simple mind game, but since your doing extremely fast combos, it pushes it to the limits. Smash 4 has the same thing going for it, but it's actually a lot slower, which gives you more time to think and react to, making it less fun to play. I totally get the appeal of the games, but it's just not my thing. Overall, Melee is a lot more fun, but the extreme balance problems and technical skill required to even be considered competitive kind of just kill it for me, but this is coming from a person who couldn't even care less about the competitive scene.

HyperCharge thanks for the in-depth response! I definitely understand your gripe with melee having a needlessly high technical barrier-to-entry. I would, however, add that the simple rock-paper-scissors element of smash becomes a lot more interesting when you consider the positional advantages and movement that shape most of the 'neutral game' that smash has. but tbh smash has a lot of crap in it that we put up with because we like the game-- like you mentioned, the roster isn't balanced at all. I've dipped my toe into street fighter as well and I would say that the mind game seems the same in concept but is more complex and nuanced in 'real' fighters due to obviously being developed for a competitive audience. There's less opportunities to cheese your opponent, basically (whether it's by using weird unpredictable movement or excessive techskill). thanks for your response! one of the most detailed statements on smash I've seen from a more traditional fgc player.

Well I can't even talk about the neutral game at a professional level since I just haven't gotten too deep into Smash, but what I can say is that I enjoy the neutral game to Skullgirls a lot more. The best thing about Skullgirls specifically is that is has a ton of more tech and options you can perform with every character. You have the simple mind game of attacking, blocking, or grabbing, but it also has a ton of other character specific options on top that make it more complex. The only way to grab someone is Melee is to run up to them and press the Z button, which you can only do on the ground. Grabbing someone in Skullgirls is a lot more complicated, and there are a ton of defensive and offensive situations that allow you to get a grab or avoid a grab. You can grab someone on the ground, but you can also grab someone in the air, you can grab someone using character specific command grabs, and you can tech off someones grab by pressing grab at the same time (basically both players press grab and nothing happens). Melee is pretty exciting because your basically playing 50 games of rock paper scissors in 10 seconds. In Skullgirls, your playing rock paper scissors way less, but you also have 3-4 different pairs of scissors that beat and lose against 3-4 different kinds of rocks and paper.

I think you summed up the quantity/speed vs complexity of the mind game in melee compared to other fighters perfectly. a lot of the time I will go to play street fighter when I get frustrated with melee because it feels like I actually have the ability to assess each situation and pick an option in response that I feel like I chose for a reason (even if I pick the wrong one), whereas in melee sometimes if you just do dumb stuff like run in and upsmash it can work for almost no reason (edit: at least from my perspective as a pretty bad player who has played a significant amount).

@@thejonbrownshow8470 First one is from Brawl. I don't remember what it's called but it plays during one of the story mode stages. Second one is from Smash 4. Maybe an Earthbound stage? Idk, I've never played Smash 4. But he tends to use music from the game he's showing onscreen at the time (with a few exceptions such as the Malo Mart theme from Twilight Princess).

I always thought it was because of the 3DS, but I think the inclusion of 8 player smash was another reason to cut them too. If the 3DS wasn't handicapping them, I can imagine having 8 Ice Climbers in an 8 player smash would cause just as much problems

Yeah, totally surprised by that! I think the concept of bringing back all the old characters to make an ultimate version was really smart for building off of the Wii U version.

It has events, both single player and multiplayer. In my opinion, events are way better than spirit battles because they told told stories and had way more variety. Along with that, the classic mode is different and is pretty much randomized and different each time. Smash 4 has All Star mode and the trophies, which are way more fun to collect than spirits! Don’t forget master orders and crazy orders! Those were neat original modes. However, yeah, Ultimate is a much more convenient game to play with way more customization and variety than 4! But playing Ultimate with friends is risky for me because I worry that my Joy-Cons will break every time I play with them...

Eh. Yeah. World of Light was pretty lame, especially compared to the adventure modes in Brawl and Melee. Ultimate had classic mode too, but that’s a given with any Smash game. Ultimate removed events and all star mode and it also removed master orders, crazy orders, and smash run, which were introduced in the previous game.

Pre-release I was led to believe that World of Light would be comparable to Subspace Emissary. Which is a ridiculous claim since WoL doesn't even measure up to Melee's Adventure Mode. I can't tell which way to go to progress, what little story there is is lame, the whole sticker system sucks, the overworld design is just bad. It's actually more like Melee's All Star Mode than anything.

Most people already had the 3DS, it came out a couple of months earlier, and they didn't really care about having the next gen experience. I probably should have explained myself better when I was talking about how no one wanted the 3DS version. Before the Wii U and 3DS versions were announced, I can't imagine people saying that they want the next Super Smash Bros game to be in 240p with worse controls, you know what I mean? Most people just got the 3DS version out of convenience rather than the quality.
